As a respectable artist and interior decorator I would wish for someone who would repaint a whole room to compliment a boarder for this pan. I could see it used either way or alternating with both. What a great way to create a waterfront theme. Needless to say i feel this is a great pan.

Hi all, there is an opportunity for me to finally join the 70-200mm club...I have a chance to buy a used copy of this lens for an extremely reasonable price, about the third of the asking price of the MkII version. However, the seller has advised me that there is a small issue with it, that the IS occasionally makes the image "jump" when activated. Is this a common problem, and should I be concerned about it? Also, I know the MkII version is the best thing since sliced bread, but is it 3 times better than the MkI version? Seriously tempted by this lens at this price...
redjamesg
24th of February 2012 (Fri), 10:01
It's not a problem, it's just when looking through the viewfinder when the IS kicks in, the image gets a bit blurred for a millisecond untill the IS is up and running.
It dosn't interfere with any of the image quality or the handling of the lens itself.
For one third the price of a mark II, I wouldn't even considder pros/cons in getting the old one, just get it, it'll be well worth every $$.

well i spent 2 hours in a camera shop today comparing this lens against the 70-200 F4 IS and the F4 was considerably sharper so i sold them my 2.8 and bought the F4. now only time will tell if i miss the 2.8 compared to the 4.

how do you calibrate a 70-200 2.8 to a canon 40 D?
I shoot with a 40D, and unlike the bodies that came after, the 40D doesn't have a way for the owner to calibrate with a particular lens. The body and the lens can be sent to Canon to be better paired, is what I've understood from other posts.

Heh! I wouldn't expect the shots on the Web from the newer lens to just jump out and "grab" you...
For one thing this lens is still the excellent lens that it's always been! I hear the MkII is a bit sharper, and that wide open it shows. I also hear it has the new, broader/deeper IS, which can definitely make a difference to you the shooter, but still in the end this lens still makes outstanding images and does it quite well. I know the MkII has very happy customers who don't regret upgrading, but our lens obviously still has very happy customers and still feel no need to upgrade.
Sadly, this lens is going "on the block" because I need to raise some serious cash, but I won't weep if it doesn't sell:)!

In a corner food bar in New York City I once ask the gentleman beside me, "sir can you tell me how to get to Radio City Music Hall". I have thought about his answer many times. It was, "practice, practice, practice", and then he moved on glancing back with a smile only to have a second look at my reaction.

Think it looks good,Armando. I understand why you did it, the background is to busy and distracting, it becomes less so with abit of blur. To get that sharpness on the car, i guess it's at f/5.6? Mine was never sharp at 2.8, but stoppes down to 4-5.6 it was amazing.
I sold mine to get a 24mmL, i know i will miss it, but... Will be adding a 70-300L down the line, reach and compactness, the 70-200 is a very good lens, but it's so heavy.

Some find it hard to understand that even though they are the "L" elite sometimes a little pp massage is done to meet ones likes. Thanks for the kind words and good luck with the separation anxiety.

I had a 70-200 F/4 IS before the 70-200 f/2.8 IS, but the manual focusring broke, it was amazingly sharp though and i loved it. I wouldnt have gotten the 2.8 if it had worked.
I think in time the 70-300 or perhaps a 100-400 markII, is the way for me.
As for the PP, i think Armando has done it to highlight the car and to lead the viewers to it, and not to the less than optimum background. We are all here for our hobby and to learn and better our skills, i guess. So instead saying its horrible, give some pointers on how it could have been done better.

I don't mind the shot personally, although the "halo" on the rear of the car looks a bit odd. One thing I would say though, as this is a lens sample thread it might be good to mention that gaussian blur etc has been applied else it might give a false impression of the lens capabilities? Happy shooting, that boat shot is lovely. I'm not jealous of your location at all! :D

1) Shoot in Portrait orientation
2) Keep your camera level
3) Shoot with plenty of overlap
4) Shoot in Manual so your exposure stays consistent
5) Tweak one "average" frame in LR
6) Copy settings from 5 and apply to every frame you want to use
7) Export to CS5 as "Merge To Panorama"
8) Sit back and watch
9) Rotate / Crop in CS5
10) Flatten Image
11) Apply High Pass filter to a promoted copy of 10
12) Change 11 layer property to Overlay
13) Save as TIF file

How do you get it that sharp Flying Photog
The high pass filter with overlay blend mode that Jay mentioned is a method of sharpening in post production.
It also helps that Jay is such an experienced photographer and knows his equipment inside and out, and has a tremendous eye. :)
No amount of post production sharpening can help when things are out of focus.
I'm at an age where the eyesight isn't what it once was, and I have to rely more and more on the autofocus capabilities of the lenses. And a high enough ISO to get a fast enough shutter speed to compensate for my worsening ability to hold the beast steady. And take multiple shots, hoping that the autofocus will get it spot on at least one of those times.

It's does have immense flare issues! I don't use any filters, UV filters would only make the flare worse (UV protection at sensor level is hardly required, these filters are generally used for protection for digital).
