Sure man, sounds like a plan. BTW, not sure if you could tell, but these shots were taken at Allen Pond :cool: There are more of the first two photos (http://armindefiesta.blogspot.com/2007/11/autumn-color.html) and last two photos (http://armindefiesta.blogspot.com/2007/11/brooke-jennifers-photo-session.html) in my blog.
No way, man. I live right up the street from Allen Pond. I take my son there all the time. Been to the ice skating rink there a few times as well. I've got all kinds of photos of my kid running around that place. :lol:
Love you wedding shots, brother. ;)

Mine arrived Friday. I didn't have nearly enough time to play on Friday, so Saturday's Christmas-y trip gave some early opportunities:
A band playing at Castroville Cafe:

One sample from a dinner I was asked to photograph:

Gotta love tungsten, weathered wood sloped ceiling, and a blue/red neon sign on the head wall.
Plenty more to follow. My first impression was that it blows away the color of my 24-105 L...I wasn't expecting that, and I don't like having to find ways to do an entire shoot on the 70-200.

The 70-200 2.8L IS is the Carmen Electra of lenses.
135L = Jessica Alba
85L = Eva Longoria
35 = Halle Berry
50 1.8 = Whoopie Goldberg
:lol:
That's rich Malone. Perfect choices.

I've considered switching from the non-IS to the IS version for a long time.
However, I keep hearing that the IS version is significantly inferior optically to the non-IS.
Would anybody here that has owned both like to chime in? Maybe show a few 100% crops wide open?
Just saw this but that same exact question popped-up in my mind when I was shopping for my first 70-200L f/2.8. I found a test review that showed that the f/2.8 IS was inferior to the non-IS version, epecially wide open, but the reviewer commented that it's noticeable only if you're shooting fine-grained emulsions. In digital, after cropping at 300ppi, you would hardly see any difference. Just repeating what the reviewer said.
Personally, I found that with IS, my percentage of kepers increased dramatically, expecially in lower-light and when I did not feel like pushing my ISO too much. However, I suppose IS vs non-IS would be a moot point once Canon releases a 9D Mk II or 60D or 70D body. I would imagine that the sensors then would give ISO 12800 performance to what we're used to seeing now at 200 on a 10D or at 400 on a 20D. But for now, I guess IS does play a crucial part in the decision making process.

A lens shouldn't affect metering tendencies, since the camera basically measures whatever light comes through. Check that your exposure compensation settings aren't off.

Understandable wide open, but the camera doesn't meter with the aperture stopped down. If the lens' aperture mechanism is inaccurate, f/4 could be f/3.97 or f/3.7, etc.

Yeah, that's what they are, big rats!
I'm not sure, but they seem to gnaw on wood the same as beavers do (they have the teeth for it). The ponds where I took this shot are either formed by beaver dams or nutria dams, and the trees around them get regularly gnawed on, and I haven't seen any beaver here over the months. Anybody know about this?

David,
Great shots and welcome to the club of "often frustrated but sometimes thrilled"! Those are nice shots! And the 70-200 is a very sweet lens to start with!

David S : great work with the flying birds.
Mind sharing your technique? I'm assuming you use AI Servo with all points enabled?
How much cropped are they ?

Yeah, there weren't many keepers. It was definitely a great learning experience. This lens does rock!

Thanks! I did crop these. Not sure how much. I think I messed the pics up a little in PP as they look more grainy than the raw shots. I am going to try to redo them. My technique shouldn't be followed.:) I am a newb to bird shooting. If I remember correctly, I shot AI Servo with center point which probably was a mistake but I don't have a nice AF like the 1D. Also, this was shot off a boat.

ErikM
28th of January 2008 (Mon), 12:35
Mine is pretty damn sharp throughout all apertures :D I regularly shoot wide open with great results.

Nice shots Jon!
f/5.6 is usually the sharpest for center for both of my lenses. But like Erik said, it is sharp at all apertures for me anyways.

Who said this lens is soft at 200mm even at 1/125 seconds shutter.;)
The picture is not cropped. I sharpened in PP sinced I shot this in RAW but very minimal sharpening was added. I applied USM once at .3 radius at 200%.

Thanks! I am loving this lens more I shoot it. Sorry, I don't have 100% crops as I resized these batch before doing the PP.
I applied USM at 300% and .3 radius on the following shot. Almost too much. :)

David S
14th of February 2008 (Thu), 18:42
^^^Depends on zoo. With my 30D, it is perfect for the San Diego Zoo. There are maybe 1 or 2 shots I wish I had the 100-400 for the reach but that is like out of 400 shots.

What body are you using as that can make a huge difference? On a full-frame, I wouldn't like the reach at all for the zoo.
