ive used it handheld... if you have good technique for steadying your hands & keep the shutter at a reasonable speed you should have no trouble

I've taken many thousands of shots with mine. I think I can count the number of times I've mounted mine on a tripod or monopod on one hand. The IS is fantastic!

I just bought the Canon EOS Rebel XTI and I am fairly new at taking pictures. I was wondering how were you able to shoot in black and white? Was it a setting in the camera , or did you shoot in raw and run it through Photoshop?

19th of March 2008 (Wed), 15:15
much better to adjust to black & white in photoshop from a RAW file using the sliders to adjust. when you shoot b&w in camera, the camera applies its limited range of processing tools and the conversion may not be to the photo's best advantage. but rememebr when you shoot, that you need a good range of tones for a successful b&w photo, as often quite different colours convert to very similar tones. try to 'see' the saturation and 'value' of the colours you are shooting to get an idea of how they will convert. hope that helps

I have been using this lens a ton for shooting hockey since getting it. Here is one of my better shots so far this season. 1600 ISO, only a tiny bit of color noise reduction and some other tweaks in Lightroom. I normally use a monopod but have done some handheld and it is not too bad. It does get heavy if constantly held in shooting position (as in sports) thus why I find the monopod very handy.

It says you have a grip, get a wrist strap around on it and put it on -- if you compensate the weight between ur left and right hand.. it makes a HUGE difference over 3-4 hours of shooting.

I've just picked up a 70-200 f/2.8. Is there a big difference in IQ with the IS version? Some photographers I've met swear by the IS and say there's a BIG DIFFERENCE! Should I have spent the extra $500 for the IS?

i don't think there is much of any difference in image quality between the non IS f/2.8 and the IS version. The only thing the extra money buys you is 3-stop image stabilizaiton (useful for handholding the lens in low light, or keeping the viewfinder steady to compose your shot...and IS is actually useful on a lens of this focal length range), and also weather-sealing (non IS version is not weather sealed).

I'll agree with the post above mine. Don't worry about the IQ of the lens. The only question is how steady are you in holding your camera with the lens, if you're not using a tripod or monopod.
Get out and take pictures. Practice holding your gear as steadily as possible in various types of lighting. If as a whole your pics look good, then you can be happy! If as a whole they are blurred, then you can consider exchanging for an IS version.

Used to have the NON IS version until I dropped it. Now have the IS version and image wise there's no difference to speak off unless your into MTF charts etc. I have noticed that I end up with more keepers than I did before which is due to the IS doing it's job while shooting pictures of my daughter inside the house. 40th at 2.8 at 200mm without IS is hard to do.
For outside work I've noticed no difference at all.
My lens hits it sweet spot at 5.6

No problem ....I just like my version because I want the grass color popup ,so that why I over saturation the grass ,then I HDR the image by create 2 more (+2EV ,-2EV) .
I did calibrate my laptop (Dell) , It didn't look that bad at all , I also make sure the photo came out same as I see on my computer or online here ...I went to costco print it out ...it's look difference (brightness)about 2/3 stop compare to original in computer .

No sharpening applied at all - just as-is shot from the camera and converted with defaults with DPP. I tried to aim at the eyes, but shooting at 75-100 ft (guess) isn't easy to hit!
Honestly, I thought it very sharp. I've tested my copy against static objects and it's plenty sharp for me, even printed 16"x20"!

I never shoot at f/2.8. I seem to prefer f/5.6 and f/8 and f/11. Given that, and the fact the the f/4L IS may be a touch sharper, why carry all that extra weight?
EDIT: This shot, as an example, was shot at f/5. The f/4L IS could have taken the same shot just as well.

Took this shot after a CNN camera man knocked my 70-200L + XT to the ground. I had it by my side as a back up, I was using 30D + 24-20L because we were about 9 or 10 feet from her for the begining of her rally at Drexel University.

Yeah, when it happened there were about 5 of us inside the fenced in area with Hillary. Everyone looked when they heard the drop. The CNN guy was like, "i'm sorry dude" then afterwards he kept asking if it was ok. I figured if I did freak out on him there, the Secret Service would have made me dissapear.

Well, there is always the 135/2L. :) And my experience is the mk III bodies can hadle a bump in ISO without too much difficulty. As an aside I notice the Bill Clinton shot was at f/4 and about 135mm.
