Had a little more money than talent or experience. Now I have none of either. But on the up side, I have my first duck shot and hopefully my first successful post. So much to observe, absorb, and learn. I have been a lurker long enough. But with the duck out of the way, I can start in earnest. I apologize in advance if all you see is the red x, or if the pic is too big, too small or just plain bad. Just got the lens yesterday, but can already see (if not yet capture) the possibilities.

Just curious...I got this lens last Friday and went shooting over the weekend. What are the camera settings that seem to work best? That is, the default sharpness settings? And what about the Focus mode--(I'm thinking "servo" after my experience with the narrow depth of field, shooting street scenes)? Any suggestions?
I'm trying to figure out "how" to use this lens to get the best results. So far, it's fun, but I haven't made any prints yet. And no ducks!

Yeah, a 10 stop filter tends to help create those long exposures for smooth water :)

Thank you. Yeah I have some others taken with my friend's 17-40 that show the clouds moving but not with this shot. I needed to zoom in on the waterfall from about 300' up. It is a unique angle and you wont see it often because the hike to where that was taken from is steep and tricky.

Well, I got a bee in my bonnet and decided to visit a rodeo that is in town over the weekend.

Note that I'm a wildlife shooter, not a sports shooter, even though last Friday I spent a great afternoon shooting kiteboarders here along the Columbia River. Kiteboarders are kind of wildlife, you know?

So maybe horses, steers, bulls, and all that count too, right?

Well I figured two trusted tools for the job: the 1D Mk III and the 70-200 f/2.8 IS.

Here are the first two shots -- I'm still working on the 500+ shots I took, including some at ISO 3200, and, well, I'm not disappointed!

Nowadays I always try to save my images to jpeg with exif data for easier searching but this was taken before I knew the importance of that.

This thread and some others convinced me to get this lens this week. At one point I had the f2.8 version in my left hand and the f4 in my right. That's when I knew, the f2.8 IS is the ONLY choice:

No. It's not your monitor...it's the poor picture compression program I used to downsize the shots to fit into the file size requirements of this BBS.

The full res shots are actually dead clean!
