Here is a shot that I won't say is a "great picture", but that it illustrates what is so cool about this lens.
I had to stand a ways back to get a good angle of view, so I used 150mm, and still I wanted a good isolation of subject, and so f/2.8 was the order of the day! Tricky, because I wanted the full flag in focus, but it worked! You can see the stitches on the flag, but the nearby trees are nicely soft.
I've been using this lens a lot with sports/action shooting, very happily. Normally I shoot wildlife, with longer reach, but I'm enjoying more close-up work with a lot of versatility that this lens gives!

Tim: I just purchased the 70-200mm IS USM. Love it! Do you have any idea how the bayonette mounting ring on the camera holds up to the weight of the lense if you're not careful to hold it by the lens at all times?

Supporting the lens is for image stabilization, not to hold the mounting together. I've never heard of Canon mounts coming undone by not holding the lens up, although with super-telephotos I can imagine that over time stress to a body could add up. And, with super telephotos, the weight balance is toward the lens, so it makes sense and naturally works to support the lens, which is why there is a tripod mount on the big telephotos.

Couple I took in the first few days.
Must admit its a fantastic lens - I am very happy with spending the extra money on it.
One of my first experiences was photographing a local jazz festival.
My first experience with people assuming I was a press photographer thanks to the beige lens colour and size. After a guard commented on my lens, I got ushered by security to right in front of the stage, and stood before a thousand or so people and took my photos. :)

Thanks, Tony: The lens weighs 5 pounds and it's just one of those things I needed to know. I've yet to put my lens through the tests.

Beautiful...
You probably could have slowed your shutter speed even a bit more and gotten a full prop disc with some nice light on it.
A little PP to even out the WB and add just a little pop and you've got some winners here!
How'd you go about setting up this shoot?

I was at my local airport where I fly out of to find my friend ( yellow cub ) was test flying his new plane that he and his friend just finished restoring. A fellow from a nearby airport that I know just purchased a restored L-19 bird dog just flew in, seen that I had my camera and asked if I wanted to try to get some shots of the cub from the back seat of the L-19. I couldn't refuse, it was a perfect opportunity to get some camera air time. The L 19 was a pleasure to photograph from, aside from that I realized there is a lot I need to learn. I took quite a few pictures, some of them are like what I posted but the rest were disappointing, some were blurred from letting the lens get into the airstream, some were out of focus I imagine due to the auto focus seeing the ground instead of the airplane, I guess I should try to manual focus in that situation. I was afraid to go lower on the shutter speed but also afraid of going to high as to have the prop stopped, again I'm here to learn.
I have been in the aviation field for quite a few years and enjoy photographing aircraft, recently I had some pictures published in AOPA and Plane and Pilot and I hope to continue SO I could use all the help i can get.

You can really set apart the "artist photographer" from the technical photographer in these forums. David, your portraits, while technical in their achievement, are very artistic. Nicely done! Night shots like that are quite the feat as well. I have this lens and have yet to put it under such demanding conditions.

I like these very much. Well done. When you shoot something like these portrait shots of girl and her cello what is your priority as far as focus? Did you shoot on auto focus or manual? The reason I ask...I always look for clear, sharp eyes. I have this thing about losing the eyes and feel as if I've failed if I didn't get perfect focus on the eyes. I'd like as many responses on this as possible so please give your opinion. Thanks:
Sfordphoto
30th of August 2008 (Sat), 05:32
hey kamra, thanks for your comment.
I used a very wide aperture, which was a bit noob on my account...I probably should have used something more like f/5.6 on the third shot (for having used a wide aperture, i was suprised a lot of it was still in focus, including the cello and door...but I think it was because i was standing pretty far away from her, so DOF is increased). For #1 and #2 my priority was blurring out the background, which is why I used a wide aperture.
My priority for focus is exacctly what you look for: the eyes. When I shoot people, I always aim my center focus point for their eyes and then recompose. I currently have my cameras set to use just the center focus point (which I believe is the most accurate, anyway). I tap the autofocus button so that it blinks confirmation on one of their eyes, and then recompose the shot. I was shooting on auto focus, not manual. I don't trust my eyes yet...I am waiting for a bigger viewfinder or one of those focusing screens to give my eyes a try, at least with wide aperture telephotos and wide aperture primes, where the proper focusing is very critical when shooting wide open.
Hope that helps!

LOL. So, was the brunette staring you down, or were you far enough off that it just appears that way? She doesn't look pleased!
BTW, the blonde woman was in that image you posted here earlier, wasn't she? The one I thought had been taken of dancers?

At work, our connection blocks most images, so it's rare for me to even try coming here during the day. I wonder if something was causing Sfordphoto's connection to block the images, or if the images had a faulty link at the time?

Got some amazingly crisp shots of the speaker, and participants, but no releases for display on internet. When speaker says okay for his photo to be posted on our state chapter website, maybe I can post here also. But by then, I'd better have some others!

Took my new lens to cricket today for its first proper outing. Considering I have lost the 200-300 range that my 70-300 offered, I don't care! :D Cropped images from the 70-200 at 200mm are far better than the 70-300 at 300mm uncropped. Happy days! Unfortunately we lost the cricket :(! Good tight match though.

This is an amazing lens. I am just beginning to explore the capabilities. We drove through the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge last night just before dark. I shot this hand-held from the car. ISO 200, F 2.8, 200mm, 1/60 second. I must admit I was not ready for him to take flight. ISO too slow, AF set for one shot, evaluative metering instead of spot meter. Yes, I got lucky! What a LENS!
Hey that's something -- my son and I left there about 6:00 last night -- we were probably leaving about when you were getting there!
