What lens is this guy using? I can't tell. Is it the 4L or the 2.8L? It has the ET-86 Hood on it. I know the 2.8L comes with that hood.

http://www.dterryphotography.com/gallery/6196335_SWRrK#390757909_BY4KH-X3-LB

Edit: I just looked and the 2.8L IS comes with the ET-86 Hood and the 4L IS comes with the ET-74.

Is it possible to take the Tripod Mount off of the 2.8L IS?

Yes, you can remove the tripod mount. Ok, good because I thought you couldn't and if I couldn't, it might get in the way of your hand positioning.

when im not using mine and i feel lazy i just flip it out of the way. i also do that if i feel that it is too dirty to remove the lens and get more crud on sensor.

After working a lot of OT, and selling 75% of my old equipment, I upgraded to a Canon 40D from an XTi, and picked up my first L, the 70-200 2.8 IS. I finally got to test it out the other day, and did a quick walk around a local park.

The build quality of this lens is unlike anything I have dealt with before! Everyone talks about L quality build, and I kind of shrugged it off, I was more excited about the optics, but DAYUM, this surprised me. The IS on this lens is also great, I had keepers as low as 1/40 at 200mm.

It took a little bit to get used to the 40D, but I am really liking this camera. All the extra functions, expanded ISO, more accurate AF points, and easier/quicker AF point selection will really come in handy. The build of this camera is also far superior to my old XTi. Not sure of focus accuracy of this camera yet, but it seems equal to, if not better than my old XTi -- I need more shooting time to figure that out.

Anyways, here are some pics from the 70-200 in a local park. Not the best focal length to bring to a park, but I wanted to force myself to use this lens and test it out. Most of these shots were done at 2.8, with the shutter speeds generally hovering around 1/200 (wanted to test the IS out extensively).

Very little PP on these -- mostly just adjusting exposure and white balance.

I went into London Drugs today during my lunch break and I got to try out the lens in the store on a 50D and holy crap! this lens is amazing! It is so clear and right away, the background blur took in effect. I was scared I would drop the camera and lens when I was looking at them. I can't wait to get this lens and camera. The lens looked kind of beige though. I thought it was supposed to be white. I will not be getting it at London Drugs though because they're prices are so high. I am getting it at the photo store in the mall for way cheaper.

Also about the weight. I didn't find it a problem at all. It wasn't that heavy.

I also found it cool how the zoom happens all in the inside of the lens and how it doesn't retract on the outside. What does it do to make it zoom in the inside of the lens?

Waaay too much stuff out of focus here! Where do you get off having a little bit in focus and then all this little bit of **** sharp? I think you should return it:)! (or send it to a POTN user for in-depth testing)!

Hi, I am new to the group and am an amateur photographer. Are there different versions or release dates for lenses? For example, is a Canon 70-200L 2.8 IS the same regardless of when it was made or do they upgrade the optics or features from time to time without changing the model identification? I see a wide variety of prices offered for the same lens online at different stores, and I have never bought a lens online before. I would appreciate any advice you have to offer. Thank you in advance.

There is some disparity in prices, even among reputable dealers, but there are also plenty of unreputable dealers out there. To me, I'm willing to pay a bit more for the top-notch service and dependability of an outfit like B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/).

If, though, you come across a "real deal", be suspicious, and at the least look up the vendor on resellerratings.com (http://www.resellerratings.com/).

As far as I know, there hasn't yet been a Mark II version of this lens. I purchased mine through Amazon. While not the lowest price, I feel very comfortable purchasing through Amazon, and the price was among the lower ones.

And here's one shot with this lens. Cropped a bit to eliminate some other players.

ok folks, my copy of this lens just arrived here at work and i have a catwalk shoot this evening and i literally am going straight home, grab my 5D, drive to the shoot, put lens on and start shooting.

i will have no time to play with it before hand, anyone care to give me any tips? in particular the IS as I have never had a lens with IS before. I will be shooting from a media rise (not alongside the catwalk) and from a brief read of the manual I should be using Mode 1?

tonylong
5th of November 2008 (Wed), 19:10
The lens is pretty much a breeze to work with. There is a focus distance limiter switch -- if the models will all be farther than 2 1/2 meters, you can set it at the longer setting to help speed up the AF especially in lower light.

If you will be panning the models as they walk, the Mode 2 setting may be effective, but if walking slowly may not. It's the kind of thing that some practice can tell. At any rate, half-press (or back-press) your focus button for a half second or so and you will be able to see the IS kick in, before tracking and taking a shot.

Have fun! It should be a great lens for that type of work, and is wonderfully sharp to boost!

Remember IS only helps with camera shake. Won't freeze subject movement. Mode 1 best. Mode 2 only for horizontal panning. I don't use the IS when shooting sports, only when shooting still subjects. (or relatively still)

those reseller ratings for sonic camera are hilarious. You have to be so careful when ordering anything on the internet. It's always been that way. It's unfortante people fall scam to these things. I deal with a few eBay resellers (Hong Kong) and even then it's even more important to watch your back. I haven't been scammed before simply because I dig deep for any signs of foul play. I'd never hand over my credit card to an online store without seeking feedback. (mind you, I just payed off my final credit and have canceled them all completely since I HATE credit) The stories about sonic camera are atrocious. But ya can't help but laugh of some of that stuff...

and i guess i can contribute a shot for this lens category while i'm posting...

"waiting for the ceremony to begin"

i love how a telephoto gives you the ability to get right in there without spoiling the moment. Factor in its aperture for indoor situations and IS to steady your shot, and you've one heck of a formula to "make the shot".

my review...

The Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM is a behemoth of a lens. This is considered to be a staple workhorse for many outdoor portrait artists, journalists, and sports shooters alike. The metal lens barrel houses a considerable amount of glass and electronics to provide a constant f/2.8 large-aperture opening from wide to tele-focal length. Let’s get the specs out of the way first:

Took a bit to get accustomed to that increase in weight, but it has sure been worth the effort. Now at the end of my son's high school season, toting the behemoth around is nothing.

Now comes club season. :D

One from the season. 40D, iso 3200, f/3.2 can't remember the shutter speed. But this was under the lights at night in the gridiron stadium, and the ISO and f stop are generally the same for all those games.

love this lens, as it's my first L lens. with that said, i need some advice/suggestions on how to shoot in bright sunlight. obviously, i'm looking to shoot the sharpest hand held pics possible.

here's a pic i took this wknd of my cousin in bright sunlight.

It is obviously overexposed as you have noted.

Try shooting in manual mode or adjust your exposure compensation down one stop.

In manual, you'd do ISO200 1/50 f/8 or ISO400 1/100 f/8 or ISO400 1/200 f/5.6.

You can also try changing the metering mode in your camera.

There are many options. :)

are there filters that can help with bright sunlight?

.... are there filters that can help with bright sunlight?

Not really ... at least, not in the context that you are thinking about. The problem here has nothing to do with the lens ... it is just a limitation of an automatic exposure system. When you have a scene with extremely high contrast such as this one taken in strong sunlight, the exposure metering system computes an exposure level that gives the "right" amount of exposure using approximately an average value of the light over the entire field of view as the measurement value. I used the term "approximately" because there are several variants to average metering that attempt to make the metering system a little smarter, but all metering systems are still very rudimentary instruments and can always stand a helping hand from the person standing behind the camera.

If you were to put a neutral density filter in front of the lens, the metering system doesn't know it so it would still make the same mistake.

It would just take longer to make the same mistake!

All of us are learning the idiosyncracies of our particular cameras in various lighting situations. Time and experience are the best teachers. Have fun as you learn. :D

I've been catching up on my photo organizing over the past week or two, and the most recent shoot I worked with was at a local airfield where I've shot and practiced my panning technique over the past number of months. On this day I began using the 70-200 rather than the 100-400 (with the 1DM3), and here are some of the results:

My wife suggested that we take the Grandchildren up onto Dartmoor today to let them get some fresh air. Fresh air? it was bloody freezing!

Managed to take a couple of shots (or more whilst I was there)

This one, 'Moon over Moor' was taken on the 5D with the 70-200L f2.8 IS, on a tripod (AF & IS off) as I used a grey grad filter. I much prefer the monochrome version although not quite Ansel Adams standard!

Is this a good lens for doing outdoor/indoor portrait shots?

I love shooting depth of field/bokeh portrait of people.

Will this lens suit my needs?

I currently have a Canon Xti, Canon 24-70f2.8L, Tokina 11-16 f2.8, and the Canon 50mm f1.8.

The 24-70L is a great walk around lens but the depth of field at 70mm focal length is not blur enough.

Thanks in advance,

nico

I agree, its fast AF and excellent sharpness make it a real go-to lens for so many things, with images that really do pop. There are times I don't know what I'd do without it -- certainly when it comes to a lot of sports/action type of stuff.

After months of coveting. After months of saving. After 1 agonizing week of waiting (out of stock when I ordered). I finally got one. These were among the first photos I took around the house. I am so glad I got the 2.8 over the f4. And the IS version too.
1. Cherries! Hand held. 200mm wide open. 1/30 sec. ISO 800.

2. The obligatory duck shot - OK, there aren't any live ducks in my neck of the woods, so this will have to do. Absolutely no PP other than export and resize. Focus aimed at the eye. Hand held. 200m @ 2.8.

I couldn't sleep last night. So I shot the moon. As a point of comparison, *here* (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=459569&page=70) is a link to the 55-250 sample thread where I shot the moon with that lens. My post is somewhere in the middle. Sorry, didn't know how to link directly to that post, or if its even possible.

Between the two shots, I think this one is better. But I don't know if its because of the lens. I've learned so much since my first few moon shots.

As always, thanks for looking.
