As well as being moved by its emotional impact, I'm impressed with how well the vignetting was accomplished. From a compositional viewpoint, the curve of the vignette mirrors the curve of the mother's brow. The vignetting of the background was done in a way that brings out the highlights of the hair on her head and ears. On many levels, an outstanding image. It's also interesting how many facial expressions cross not just cultures but also species.

So i rented some 70-200mm Glass so i can take some good pictures at the Capitals game im going to this Saturday, well since i got it for a week and i literally just received it i figure I'd test it out outside on my parents dog. Well bone head me, i left my ISO at 800 (from last night) and it is a bight sunny day. Even though my ISO is pretty high, i think my little XT did a decent job at cutting the noise down. http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/4969/tiffanyud4.jpg http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/8093/100bx9.jpg 100% crop, not touched any way besides the border in photoshop.

Regarding shooting action indoors or night outdoor games, I use aperture priority and the 70-200 lens pretty wide open, f/2.8, 3.2, or 3.5 and adjust the ISO to get a shutter speed that'll stop most of the action. I'm using the 40D body, so the highest ISO is 3200. I'm drooling over the 50D's ability to get those really high ISOs. Takes some practice holding the lens steady and breathing same as if shooting with firearm. I don't bother with IS as I rely on the ISO and shutter speed for sports. If I'm on a tripod shooting still subjects, I'll use the IS.

?? what for?
IS is designed to compensate for camera vibration caused by handholding - in some cases it is advised not to use it with a tripod because it malfunctions in the absence of these vibrations - and even if not, its not going to help the result any
you're kinda using the IS system in the exact opposite way it is designed to be used...

Hey Rick, a fellow Roblan, Cool. I had to work, but sent the wife out to Charlais and South River with my 40d and 70/200 2.8 set on full auto (sports). I'd have to say a capable combo given the last camera she used was a Kodak 110.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x255/CAReefer/IMG_4015.jpghey CAReefer, nice shots from your wife! we were at the corner of geneseo and creston, since we're out by ground squirrel hollow. man they flew by!
we liked this lense so much, but since i couldn't afford another, we also bought the f4L non-IS. that way we could use it on the XT when we both shot equine events, like our last show up at Twin Rivers. it's pretty awesome too, as long as the light is good, but then we shoot in the daytime for the most part anyway. there's just something about that L glass.
the f2.8L IS really makes out in low light though. last week we were cruising around downtown for a few pics in the park and decided to stop at the kilt. even at dusk on the back patio, i was able to shoot shots without flash that came out awesome! i'll have to post some here.
oh yeah, i couldn't help noticing your handle, CAReefer, i poked around and my suspicions were correct. we're also beginner reefers, well, nano-reefers. picked up a biocube 29 from the LFS (the pet dept. of course). do you know jason? and another reefer in town named art? anyway, here's our progress:

Little unrelated to the lens but I find it way to often that pro photographers should be put under tougher restrictions at such events. Sometimes I just cannot help it not to think that part of them were hired to obstruct the view
And I certainly have compassion to the guys that have just ridden hundred miles on their bicycles and now have to inhale all the exhaust coming from that dude's motorcycle directly into their faces.

For those in the upper NY (Poughkeepsie, Monticello) area, it's a fantastic event to go to...especially for photos. They basically close down town streets and Rally on them!
I went 2 years back with my f/4L and got some stunning photos (above image included). Can't wait to give the f/2.8L IS a crack at it.
