Michael Green that is a mighty fine looking dog. Love the English version of the Lab rather than the tall skinnies we have here.

What are peoples thoughts on the mobility of this lens - is it ever an issue, or do the results out-weigh (no pun intended) the slight muscle strain induced by lugging it around.

Also, how many people have their camera's perminately (or at least 'most of the time' )attached to this lens??

I got mine about a month ago and it has not been off the camera yet. I am completely comfortable walking around with it but at the same time I'm still young and for me the results are so worth lugging this bad boy around. :D

I lug it around all day for five days per shoot for my clients. I'm small - only 5'7" and skinny and I have no problems. Perhaps when you first get the lens, the weight might take some getting used to but once you're accustomed to it, it should not be a problem - at least for me it isn't.

And fwiw, while I carry the 70-200 on a gripped body, I also lug around another camera body with a Tokina 11-16.

i have to honestly say, it wrecks my left wrist. when i support it too long doing shoots.

however, i have a bad wrist (mild CTS?)

I often use this for prolonged shoots, and I pack a monopod for this -- it's fine when I'm just bouncing along but for shooting from a single position for an extended period the monopod saves a lot of strain.

During soccer/football season (which never ends BTW), I'm always using this lens. I'll often adopt this posture. It steadies the lens, and changes my point of view. I get tired of seeing the same viewpoint. At times I'll camp at one of the goals and lie prone, just for a change in perspective.

At first it was tiring, but my left arm toughened up. :D

This was shot with a 50D + 70-200 combo. I didn't quite get the focus and DoF right so the 'Canon' on the strap is blurred. Also, I didn't clean up some of the blemishes on the camera body, but I was just messing around with a DIY 'studio' setup.

And how it was done (yes, I'm a cheap skate.. - or actually, it would also be because the 70-200 cost so much, I can't afford to get proper lighting :p )

is this lens worth spending the extra 700 or whatever for IS?

I shoot mostly sports. I keep getting them from the school's equipment room, but would Like my own at this point. I feel like, usign a quick shutter speed around 1000 like I have to for basketball and such, the IS wouldn't really do anything except make me lose a stop...

thoughts?

the IS version is generally accepted to be noticeably less sharp than the non-IS version...

IS is no use for freezing fast-moving subjects

After spending about an hour going through all these links I am slightly concerned. I just bought one of these paired with the 5d mk ii and i've noticed that I've missed some shots that I thought were easy, and too many of the pictures have come out a little soft. It seems that our gallery does have a lot more "soft" pictures than the 70-200 f4 IS. I'm not sure whether our f4 would be better than their f4, but either way they seem to have more "tack sharp" pictures.

I'm not considering getting rid of mine or anything but do any of the others feel the same way?

F4 to 2.8 is it that big of difference with adequate light? Unless one has used a 70-200 a lot you are going to induce camera shake until one gets steady with a telephoto. That was my problem, rushing shots and not holding both hands steady enough. I seldom get soft shots anymore.

For myself and I am new to the whole camera thing, but enjoy it alot, I think it is rushing the shot and getting a better understanding of photography in general. I considered the F4, but decided to get the F2.8 since I will be in arenas for most of my pics, but I cannot wait until we start getting nice weather in Alberta so I can use it outside with my kids

Yep, I used the TC for all the shots. If I'm not mistaken, that one was at 140mm FL, wand wide open at f/5.6.

@nik.hisham that last shot is AWESOME. You can clearly see the front left wheel is not spinning!!! nice capture.

Thanks. I took quite a few pics but my keeper rate was not as high as I wanted.. and I think it was because my shutter speed was set too low. I locked it at 1/100 in Tv mode. The cars were taking a hairpin turn and were not that fast, but if you look at the 'motion' in the wheels, it looks like they are going really fast. I think 1/250 would have worked better, and gotten me more keepers. But this one is my favorite so far.

Thanks for looking!

my work flow is this.

raw to jpeg using DPP
Imagenomic portraiture 2 software using almost basic defaults -sliders never move more than -+ 2 increments.. don't want to over do it.

then i l mask the finished over the original to blend in what i don't want too soften..hope it makes sense.. erasing using a soft brush and opacity of 50 and flow of 50..

now you know my secrets and i hope i won't go out of business.. ha ha.. ha..

white outfit guy is a friend of mine that plays amazing tennis..

he is a male model, so we were helping each other out.

when she was in the spot light, he would look up the next pose... and vice versa..

I think your lighting set up lends itself better to male portraits than female, unless it was a specific 'look' you're trying to achieve. The single light creates more bold shadows which are generally 'male' associated.

John.. thanks for your input..

i have never thought of bold as male only.. but in softness of light for female makes sense..

i have 3 portable light source in which i can use, but only like to lug around a single softbox.. being lazy..

yes.. i can fill in the other side with a hint of soft light - shoot thru umbrella on low power.. but maybe next time..

what i was going for was just some good photos.. hard light or soft, how ever it comes out.. - i am really just learning this stuff to be honest.

Pham. The male shots def look better IMO. I tend to like softer like for MOST female shots... But that's why photography is considered art. We all have our own interpretations. Again. Fantastic shots. Nice work, and I'm sure your clients would agree. If your too lazy to setup two lights, a white sheet or board strategically placed could work to soften the shadows.

Very stellar lens, but sharpness at full aperture just doesnt cut it for the price at 200mm. Anything below that at 2.8 is tack sharp. Oh yeah, as everyone knows, build quality is exceptional. Also has one of the best bokeh quality i've ever seen in a lens. Not quite as stunning as the 85L, but at least this one doesnt have the so called 'targets' in out of focus hilights like 85L does :)

Well it was originally shot in color, so i converted it to B+W.
The main adjustments was pumping up the exposure so it was overexposed some, and pumping up the contrast and blacks.

When i do black and white photos i always make sure the image is over worked more so than not to get a more dramatic effect in the highlights and shadows.
This will also increase some of the noise in the image so it looks more authentic i guess.

Great shots, Ben! Knowing this lens, I can imagine how great it is to work with this sport -- high performance and crisp shots, until, that is, it's splattered beyond hope:)!

I'm surprised they are letting you shoot from inside the net.
