Perhaps it is a comprimise for Canon, the 50/1.0 wasn't very sharp under 1.4 (then why not just get the 1.4  ), so perhaps they can make a 1.2, which is an improvement albeit slight on the 1.4. If they get 85/1.2 sharpness they will have a winner!

I thinks that's ultimately what we're holding our breath for. ;)

"Buy the rumour; sell the fact."

Well known proverb of Wall Street. A 50 f1.2L would be nice!

Yeah but the price is going to be painfull if you buy it as soon as its released. If you wait 18 months the price should come down to something less jaw dropping. Do you really need f1.2..., isn't 1.8 and 1.4 enough, does your depth of field have to be that shallow. Can you really afford the depreciation of buying a new one as soon as its released. Come on be serious, stick with the 1.4 or 1.8 and save yourself loads of cash. Would you ever use it at 1.2? Be honest you dont really need it, it's just wanton gadget lust...

Still have to have it?

Get in the queue behind me then.

All the best

I thought it was "buy on bad news, sell on good news". :)

Anyway, a 50/1.2L would be great, and would line up with rumors of an 85/1.2L Mk II with an updated AF system (faster, with non-electric FTM) and distance information. Sister lenses, like the old 50/1.0 & 85/1.2 were.

We'll have to update the "Holy Trinity" to the "Fantastic Five"

i.e...

35 1.4L
50 1.2L
85 1.2L Mk II
135 2.0L
200 2.8L

(I included the 200 because I have one and it is, indeed, fantastic)

Gary.

It would no doubt be white/grey and wouldn't fit in with the other's black suits :-).

That, and the fact it would probably cost about £3000 :-(.

Gary.

The best use for a 50 f/1.2L would be to make other knowldedgeable photographers jealous. It wouldn't mean a thing to the average citizen, and its practical uses would be pretty limited.

I had a 50 f/1.0, never used it, and sold it. I have a 50 f/1.4, and rarely use it----never at f/1.4.

So an f/1.2L will have little more value than for its bragging rights.

That's enough in my book.

Yes, I would. About half the time I think. About the same as with my 1.4 now. Also, it's more I'ld like a 50mm that isn't (as) soft wide open... and is more precise in AF. Sure, the extra 1/3 stop helps a bit, also shallow DoF isn't a problem for me, I can always stop down if I have to.
I have to buy another 50mm in about a year or so anyway, because mine isn't getting better from (ab)use

I do use the 50/1.4 quite a bit, and would appreciate the extra bit of aperture. But more importantly, I would appreciate the build quality. I like a lens that feels as good as it shoots.

I'd also like (or maybe instead) an 85/1.2 that focuses as quickly as the 85/1.8. A multi purpose lens of sorts.

And of course, bragging rights are important. I wonder if I can buy just the empty box...

Funniest thing for years was that Ripping Yarn episode from the UK Five Go Mad In Dorset: "...lashings of cream!"

I wonder if Ripping Yarns is out on DVD. As good as Fawlty Towers in places.

The old FD 50mm f/1.2L was a great lens. If they can update that for the EF mount, it would be awesome.

I have been using the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 (http://www.adorama.com/NK5012U.html) and it's a a better lens than the 50mm f/1.4 from Canon.

so the debates comes down to this. If Canon isn't coming out with the 1.2L, than I was planning to sell all my 50mm and get the Zeiss-Nikon 50mm

I disagree. I would love to see a 50mm L that could be as sharp wide open as an 85L. With crop factor bodies the 85 is a tad too long IMHO. The 50L would be a perfect focal length with the bokeh of the 85L. Unlike any of the many 50's I've used/owned that are pretty useless wide open an L version that could cut glass without being stopped down would be a very welcomed addition. In fact I'd sell my 85L for it.

Here is a thought,
What if the 2x rumors are true and Canon is coming out with a 25/f1.2 in the 2x format that is a 50/1.2 on the 35mm FF sensor, now that would be cool (and expensive). It would definately have a good chance of beating out a Zeiss.

Andy_T

Longwatcher,

sorry, I don't understand your post, as there is no Canon camera with a 2x crop factor.

Best regards,
Andy

He's referring to another rumor, that Canon would be bringing out a camera with a 'double frame' sensor: Twice as large as FF, or Cropfactor 0.5.
I sure hope they don't. At least not at the expense of the 'normal' FF, 1.3 and 1.6 CF cameras...

Hahaha ... now that's great :D

Now is the best time to launch a new medium format system
But I assume it might be a bit difficult to mount 0.5 lenses on the current EF mount for size reasons ... however, it would still be a 25 mm lens when mounted on the 35 mm system (if anybody was able to construct a 25 mm focal length f/1.2 lens with good performance in the first place) .

Best regards,
Andy

Longwatcher
23rd of August 2006 (Wed), 10:25
The rumor was that Canon was going to design the new lenses with the focal length aimed at the 35mm format but with x2 capabilities. There would be an adapter to use the new lenses on the 35mm format bodies. So you would get the sweet spot of the larger lens with a 35mm format sensor, but still be able to use the lens with the new x2 sensor whenever you upgraded. This would alleviate the complaints about fringing, vignetting, and distortion on the edges. Sounds like Nikon philosophy to me, but doing it the right way with a bigger lens.

It is only a rumor, but as I read it the rumor kind of made sense given they are approaching the physics limits on 35mm sensors without degrading quality.
