Hot off the presses, here's the press release from Tamron Japan:

http://www.tamron.co.jp/en/news/release_2006/news0215_a16.html

Made for digital cameras with a reduced image circle (APS-C). Looks like it might be quite useful.

Well, here's the answer for anyone looking for a "walking around" lens for an APS-sensor camera but needs a lens faster than the 18-85 EF-S Canon lens.

Cool, but I wish it were 17-70ish at f/2.8.

Sigma also just released a 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 DC lens.

Lets hope Tamron don't let themselves down on QA matters. This has the chance of being the lens of the year.

Just too bad Tamron has no supersonic AF drive motor. It would be nice for a lens like this to have smooth and fast focussing.

Its not that much different than the Sigma 18-50/2.8 DC which has been out for awhile already.

Cool, but I wish it were 17-70ish at f/2.8.

17-85/2.8 IS is my dream "walk around" lens. The perfect compliment to the 70-200/2.8 IS. :D

Completely agreed.

 This is great news. I look forward to seeing some test results. Hopefully it's sharper than Sigma's.

I would have prefered a 15-50 2.8 though. Even a 15-45 2.8 would have been great.
Hopefully Canon will release an Ef-s lens like this.

Rumors are that Canon may announce a similar lens w/ IS at PMA next week. If so I doubt it will be a constant f/2.8. I'll sell my 28-135mm IS for the Tamron if its optical quality is good and the price is less than the $700 (?) the Tamron is rumored to cost.

$700? The Sigma is less than $400 at Sigma4less.

$700 is MSRP. If you look at the MSRP of their SP 28-105 f/2.8 XR Di it is over a thousand but sells for $799 with a $200 mail in rebate. The price should come in around Sigma's 18-50.

Oh God. This is going to be a nice lens. If it's as good as my Tamron 28-75mm XRDi, I will have to get one.

I got pretty excited when I read about this lens. All going well it will pair nicely with the 70-200 f4L as a 2-lens travel combo. It will be interesting to see if Canon do in fact have a constant 2.8 aperture EF-S lens in this range about to be released. Sigma have one, now Tamron have one, Nikon has an equivalent - so now do Canon follow suit?

This is good news, I think. I was thinking Tamron 17-35 and 28-75....now I could have it all in one lens... :)

17-85/2.8 IS is my dream "walk around" lens. The perfect compliment to the 70-200/2.8 IS.

My thoughts exactly. Looking at the recent "market", seems that anything is possible. I just hope that Tamron doesn't release a 17-85/2.8 after everyone has bought a 17-50/2.8 based on great reviews.

Actually GREAT news. I might be up to trade both for the 17-50/2.8 if its all what its cracked up to be. At least as great as the 28-75/2.8. Man oh man f2.8.

If anyone receive any links to reviews, please do update this thread.

Adorama is already pre-selling this lens for $459 and are claiming that it will be available in mid April. Wow. This will be nice. If it's as good as my 28-75 f2.8 XRDi, it may become my standard lens for digital. I'll still keep my other tamron for my film camera.

I have to agree with this. In my experience it has never been an issue with my Tamron...but it would be nice.

For us 20D-users, it's the almost-perfect compliment for the Tamron 28-75 which is highly regarded. I am seriously considering to replace my Tamron 17-35 with this new lens if it gets good reviews (and when I've seen a few example pics made by amateur photographers like myself ;-) ).

i agree. the overlap is what makes this combo work. i've tried the 17-35 and 28-75 combo and i was switching lenses too often and never knew which one to start with.

my remedy was the 24-105L and sell the 28-75 but i probably would have at least considered the 17-50 and kept the 28-75 if the option were available then.

If this lens eventual falls to 28-75mm XR Di prices I may give this puppy a try, but only if it's as sharp as well.

I'm looking for a better fill the gap lens between my 10-22 & 24-70L combo, this Tammy might be an ideal travel lens. But only if it's an APS-C version of the 28-75mm XR Di, else all the plastic on the Tamron's generally is a downer for me, especially at $450.

Nothing yet. I'm awaiting for some tests/reviews. If people say it's as good as the Tamron 28-75, I'm willing to sell my Canon 17-40L so I can get this baby. I'd love to have both, but I'd hate to have the Canon collecting dust.

Don't forget that Tokina will be releasing a 16-50 f/2.8 as well. If it's anywhere near as good as their 12-24, it'll be a heck of a lens.

OMG. Tokina 16-50 or the Tamron 17-50. That extra 1mm is a lot of difference.

Probably not, but it means that we consumers can choose. And that manufacturers face competition, which drives them to higher quality and/or lower price...

It's not about the 1mm, it's that the Tokina AT-X pro series are built as well as Canon Ls. If it's a choice between the relatively flimsy build on a lot of the Tamron lenses, and the Tokina AT-X build, given equal optical performance, I'll go for the Tokina each time.

If it's built like the Standard Tammy (28-75) it's more than rugged enough for most situations. And: also price and weight will play a role...

Yes, reminiscent of their 12-24. I like the AF/MF focus clutch mechanism.

If the Tamron 17-50 is anywhere as good as their 28-75, I can finally replace my kit lens. I've been waiting a long time for the perfect range... and this is it.

I just purchased this lens today... Still haven't had time to go out and test it, but I'll post a photo when I do. As far as cost, I purchased mine for $2,700 HK, which is about $350 US. I thought it was quite a steal, so I was pretty excited. I went in debating whether to spend more on a 2.8, or save money on a 3.5-4. I was happy I could save money AND get the 2.8! Now off for testing...
