Got the lens and played with it today on my 5D Mk II. Also tried to use it with the Canon 1.4x II, but the rear optical element on the lens collides with the front element on the TC, so no worky. Anyway, here's a shot of a fly that happened to land on the flower I was shooting...

question for those who may own or had owned at one time the canon 100mm 2.8L IS....
keep the canon or sell it off and buy this lens?
i like the greater working distance but with sigma i am always leary of focusing issues and image quality.

This lens for some reason isn't really known to have any of the focusing issues that plague other sigmas, it's almost always quite sharp and I don't think most people have to do much manual adjustment to bring it in line either. Not to say there's never an issue, but hey, the canons could possibly have issues too so there's always a tiny risk.

Now that the OS came out this one is discontinued so I guess you'd just have to trust the seller and see if they have any focusing issues.

I can't comment on IQ, I only own the sigma

^^^^ So, are you planning on maybe checking out the new Sigma 150mm OS that is coming out then*in favour of the two you have now?

This lens has always interested me with its 150mm FL and obviously macro capabilities.I always liked the idea of longer FL Macro lenses.

The new OS along with what should be some optical enhancements from new glass elements make it even more interesting if they had kept the price close to that of this lens. Unfortunately the new one is coming in priced a little high imo. If they had priced the new one at $800-$900 I think I would be more tempted. Unfortunately a $1099 price tag on the new one is too high and they opted to (as expected) discontinue this version outright.

What surprises me the most though is that for one of the more popular Macro lenses out there it only has a 7 page thread on POTN after all these years... ?

I guess not that I would visit a macro thread all that often anyways since there loaded with insects that give me the shivers, lol.

This lens is great for macro and portraits. I just picked up a used one for about 380 USD in mint condition and am always absolutely blown away when I see how much detail this and my 5D II capture as a pair.

Well, MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro is the "King" of all macro lenses, but it also has only 7 page thread on POTN :). Sigma 150/2.8Macro is fantastic, but for many average photographers it is more like a dedicated macro rather than multipurpose lens. Many are choosing 50 - 100mm macro as a double duty solution (macro/portrait). Sigma 150/2.8Macro is a nice short telephoto prime, but most folks prefer 135L or any 70-200/2.8 for that range. To be honest, I was going to buy the older (non-IS) EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro, but there was a great discount at the local store for all Sigma lenses, so I bought mine for nearly the same price of that 100/2.8 USM and I'm glad I did :). I see 150/2.8Macro price is going up now, $850 at amazon, crazy... :D

I bought the canon because of the IS and thought it might be an advantage over the sigma. I can't say that there have been many situations where it has been useful so I think I'll keep the non-OS version of the sigma for now unless I see some real eye-popping shots coming out of the new OS version.

I just sold mine, I paid 599 at BH in 2008 and sold for 475.00 wish I would have known they were selling for much more. Its a great lens, I only used several times. I find that it shoots as well as my Canon 100 2.8 IS.

No, I don't have any. The last two shots taken at 1:1 magnification and some of the older ones with Sigma 2xTC. If you worry about the strong vignetting in that image then don't, I made it on purpose in post-processing. ...and yes, the lens is as nice as it looks. :)

Wish the shot was sharper - but dark room, and little light ment I had to shoot at F2.8, and it was moving. So not as in focus as I would have liked.

It may be too late for comments, but still...
This lens is very nice for general telephoto purposes. It has no CA, no fringing, no distortion. Impressive sharpness from corner to corner, good bokeh, decent AF speed (at least faster than EF 100/2.8 non-L USM Macro in my comparison). The only flaw I can think of is a visible amount of vignetting on full frame (which is easily correctable in PP). Some say that their copies have AF accuracy problems. My copy seems to be just fine AF-wise. However, Sigma is a third party manufacturer so it is possible and you should check the AF before buying (or before you decide if the lens stays or goes back to you preferred online retailer).
