Hi all.

Wanted to introduce myself and ask a question at the end.

I have been shooting for a few years, starting with a G3. Last summer I purchased a G1 as a backup and read that it works well for IR. I bought the R72 filter and fell in love with color infrared (examples at end).

I just ordered a pro1 (cheap being discontinued) and now plan to send the G3 off to be converted to IR with a clear glass window (by David Burren down-under) so that it will pass both visible and IR.

My questions: Has anyone converted a G3 using clear glass, and can they show my what the color looks like unaltered? What else should I expect?

Here are a few examples of my color IR work (hue-shifted to pleasing colors).

I can't answer your question about the G3 conversion (seen plenty of G1 conversions), but I would like to say those images are great :D

Very nice!

One could say that it's an improvement over reality.

#2 does not look like an IR shot. Maybe you should turn the crank the other way:rolleyes:

#3 is very nice, but I like #1 best.

Pete, thanks.
Bob, yes, #2 looks like a fall shot. I have so many that look IR-ish, that I decided to try a few that look like fall, so that I could do a set of prints for the four-seasons. I have three for each season printed and set in a 3-column frame in my family room.

here're some others, with more traditional IR colors of hawaii (first shots I took last June when I first got my g1 and R72).

Fabulous images!
Tnx for putting up the additional set.

I would not have realized it but the oriental motif seems to go with the IR look much better than the occidental. I never thought about it, but I think it has something to do with the fact that the IR look is more of pastel shades and that is more in keeping with oriental art.

Question - do they print well. Clearly, they look good on the monitor. Do you find that with the unusual color schemes that there is some different approached needed for printing or do they print just as faithfully as the standard images?

Yes, I looked them over a while ago. But after extensive conversations with David Burren (http://www.burren.cx/photo/ir_cameras.html), I feel very confident that he will convert to clear window best for me. He really knows his stuff and doesn't just add a window but adjusts focus across all focal ranges and ensures a fix to exposure issues as well. I believe he has the maintainance software from Canon to do these fine adjustments to the in camera programming.

Lifepixel provides conversion kits, but has no explanation of the in-camera adjustments. and they don't discuss clear window conversions.

My original question stemmed from something I read at Don Ellis' site (kleptography.com) which says: The G3 produces has an interesting false color scheme with an R72 when manually white balanced -- tan skies and frosty pale blue foliage. The G5 produces a virtually monochromatic grey image when manually white balanced. In fact, it's hard to see a difference sometimes between the original and greyscaled image

That was written by "Tony" at lensmate. I wondered if anyone else knew about these colors...

Thanks for the tip,though.

Yes, and no complex processing was needed for the buddhist temple shots--just autolevels/color in photoshop. Not even channel swapping. Of course, the cloudy day made it work better.

Interestingly, I and others think the prints look even better than on the monitor (I have a 19" lcd) when printed from 5x7 upto 8x10. I haven't printed bigger. Three of the buddhist temple shots are hanging in my entry and they get a lot of comments by visitors. I set them in white, antique silver and black matted frames.

Thanks for the comments.
