G2 - Connecting to PC

Hello everyone!,

Well, I just bought my G2 today! :-) Early Christmas gift to myself...*lol*. Ok, I charged the battery pack completely...then did the "Quick Start" in the manual, and took a few pictures on "Auto". But, now I've been trying to connect the camera to my PC so that I could have the pictures on my PC to play with and e-mail, etc. I've read all the "read me" files I can find, and been through the user's manual many times, and even tried going to the Canon website...but I still can not get the software that came with my camera "ZoomBrowserEX" (or any other programs I have) to recognize my camera! I know it's probably something simple that I'm missing or not doing, but I can't figure out what. Any help/suggestions?!?!?!

I had the same problem when I first tried to connect my G2 to my PC. This will sound stupid but is the camera end of the USB cable properly plugged into the camera? It was ages before I realised that mine wasn't!

Hi, there.
My computer is W2k. After I installed s/w packages correctly, connected USB cable between computer and G2, and turned on the G2's switch (play mode), everything was straight forward!
Simple question displayed; "WHich tool do you want to connect G2?" something like that.
When I selected ZoomBrowser, it runned without any problem.
If not, you should check your USB driver in the control panel-> system -> hardware....
We cannot imagine any other mistakes.....
It is very simple & straight process.

I also have trouble getting my PC to recognize the G2.
I have Windows98, and I already had a Twain file for my scanner, which is USB and which I unplugged to replace with USB cable that came with the Canon. I installed the Digital Camera Solution Disk and everything went smoothly, but I waited until the next day to connect my camera.
I disabled my antivirus and my screensaver, then
I tried to to follow the instructions to transfer two photos (taken at Medium 1 resolution), but the instructions in the manual are contradictory: page 21 has a warning saying: "Remove the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk when installation is complete so that the proper driver may be installed." then the instructions are to go to page 23 to install the driver software.
Page 23 says to install one of the following drivers from the Can. Digital Solution Disk, but when I insert the disk, the whole installation process starts over again. So I close it and open ZoomBrowser, and try to transfer photos . I can see Canon G2 in the window, I click on it, everything freezes. I have to shut down my computer from the power bar (after closing the camera first).

I can see the files for the drivers in Windows Explorer. Why should I have to install them again? If it is necessary to do so, how do I go about doing this?

I am having problems getting the USB driver to load on my PC with Windows 98b. I had some problems following the instructions (actually so much so I ended up aborting the procedure first time through) but finally got to the end of the protocol. Finally, I connected the camera and switched on the display mode. The disk goes on briefly and then everything seems ok except the wizzard that loads the driver from "camera2" folder does not start up as expected. I checked the settings>scanners and no camera is listed (ie no driver has been installed) What is the problem? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software and restarted and checked the cable and made sure the plugs are in correctly. How can I force the PC to load the driver from the "camera2" directory?

Well this installation stuff was "magic" to me, because while I know what a USB is, I have not taken any time to really understand how it has been implemented in Windows 98.

So, since XMAS I have:
(1) All sorts of trouble installing for the first time, and (2) then I upgraded my PC and had a whole new set of problems where the PC could see my latest on-camera set; but it claimed that it could not find the "server" software and would not let me download my photos.

In both cases what worked for me was (whether this is necessary or not I do not know!) was to

1: uninstall all the software
2: connect the camera, but keep it "off"
3: Only turn the camera "on" when the zoombrowser software paused with some message about "...the profile (or something like that) .... Will appear next...".
4: Also, somewhere the first time thru this process it will see a G2 event and start to help you to assign a port for the device. (I have two USB ports on my PC).

I had some similar problems... the G2 had at first connected fine to my WinME system, but after installing a (Canon !) scanner a problem showed up.

The symptom was that the built-in WinME agent that monitors Twain events (such as when you connect your camera, or put it in playback mode) would always complain that it couldn't connect to the camera.

I could get a connection using ZoomBrowser, but wanted the Win wizard to work.

Finally, after uninstalling and reinstallaing the Canon software several times from the Canon disk, I solved the probelm by forcing Windows to update the driver for the camera, from the Canon CD.

Why this should have been necessary is beyond me. But here's generally how to do it:

Start | Settings | Control Panel...

Now look for an entry such as "Imaging Devices". If you don't see a main entry like this, then open up System | Device Manager.

Somewhere you'll find an entry for the Canon camera. Open up its Properties (via right-click menu), and choose the Driver pane. Click on Update Driver and then on "Have disk" (or similar). This will get you into a file browsing mode.

Direct the installer to your Canon software CD. You may have to click on a few folders on that CD but eventually the "Finish" button will be enabled (when Windows finds the driver). Click on Finish.

Now you'd expect Windows to announce that the latest driver was already installed, but in my case it wasn't. And this fixed my problem.

Hope it fixes yours too.

BTW, with the WinME (and maybe Win98?) agent / wizard running properly, you won't need any of the Canon apps to get the photos off your camera. The Win wizard will do it. Of course ZoomBrowser is better.

Another BTW: If you can pick up Ulead PhotoExplorer or PhotoExplorer Pro, you'll find it to be the best picture viewer / arranger / renamer ever. Slower than ACDSee but much more capable. I love it with my G2.

To correct the issue that you are having, do the following:

1. Right-click My Computer
2. Click Properties
3. Click Device Manager
4. Look for "Imaging Devices" or "Other Devices"
5. The camera should be listed under one of these headings
6. Click on the model of the camera once to highlight it
7. Click Remove at the bottom of the screen
8. after you have confirmed device removal, click Refresh at the the
bottom of the screen
9. Follow the prompts to complete installation


****Note....When you get to the screen that states Canoncam.cat cannot
be found do the following

1. Click Browse
2. Browse the C;| drive
3. Double-click Program files
4. Double-click Canon
5. Double-click DCUSBTWAIN
6. Double-click Camera3
7. click OK
8. Click OK
9. Installation should begin

Thanks Theresa, your solution worked perfectly except, at least on my computer , I had to make sure the camera was connected AND in "play" mode before you could see the device when right clicking on my computer and going to device manager. Just thought I'd post that in case someone else didn't realize it like me:) I thought having the camera plugged in would be enough but it had to be on as well in oder for the device manager to pick it up. After that the solution posted worked like a charm. I wish I would have checked here first before I had unistalled my scanner and reinstalled the canon software about 3 times trying to get it to work:)

Hi everyone,

I'll post my problems with my G2 on Windows 98.

First of all, I really like the camera, and I've been able to print one 8 X 10 inch print and I'm pleased with the quality.

I've owned it for about a week and I've had some serious problems. 75% of the time, my camera is not recognized by my computer, when this happens, I can only "connect" my camera and computer by restarting my computer.

My biggest problem comes from page 33 of the software guide. I had to uninstall the drivers, which meant the only way that I could was to go mess around with windows!!! So I precariously deleted the specified files in windows, which I think is the problem. Now none of my other usb devices are working, my canon scanner, and graphic tablet, and my computer freezes whenever I try to check them out. Photoshop 6 and 7 do not work properly, and my computer is generally very slow.

So now I am very upset because I need my computer for my job and it doesn't work properly.

The only thing that I can think of doing now is installing windows XP or reinstalling windows 98. Up to this point I think I've tried everything else.

If anyone can shed some light on these issues it would be great!!!

i think only win98se support usb properly

anyway... its better to buy a card reader,its faster n portable (my cf + card reader replace floppy nowdays)

...and junk those canon software...look for breezebrowser using google

if u use card rerader and dun use *.raw then u dont need any software at all....just copy n paste from your card reader

Moat is correct, only Win98ME and also WinXP (prolly win2k too?) support usb devices fully, where the camera appears just like a hard disk on your explorer/browser otherwise you are going to have to use the cumbersome twain driver
