I'm looking for a backpack that can be used as a carry-on for flights. It needs to hold:
Camera w/ grip or 1dmk2n
24-70 2.8
100-400
100 2.8
50 1.8
580ex
monopod
misc crapSo far, I'm deciding between the Lowepro Rolling Mini Trekker and the Kata HB-207 Hiker Backpack. Both of these come with rollers, weather protection, and are close to carry on dimensions (9"x14"x22"). Anyone out there have experience with either of these as a carry-on? Have a better suggestion? Fire away! Thanks in advance.

The Tamrac Expedition 5 and 7 are carry on size. I have used both and like them alot. They will hold all your gear.

The grip or 1DmkIIN are too tall for the Lowepro backpacks. If you check the specifications of the internal dimensions and the dimensions of the cameras (with L bracket) the 1D series are 6.5" tall with bracket. The Lowepro backpacks are only 6" tall which means the pack cover puckers some which stresses the zippers. I have a Lowepro Nature Trekker (also 6" deep) with a 1DII and already the zippers don't always align right. Zipper damage is always the main reason for camera bag failure.
Tamrac are 1/4" deeper, which is better.
Haven't tired the Kata, haven't seen it in the stores.
I use an even larger bag, the Airport Addicted and is deep enough (8+") for big telephotos, 400 2.8, 500 f4 to hold everything then use the Lowepro for the longer hikes.

i have several crumplers which are fine with 1series bodies and work on planes. my schrinkle easily carries the 1dmk2 w/ bigma attached, plus 135L or 24-70, 85 1.8, and sigma 15mm fisheye. it could easily also hold the 24-70, 10d body, or flash on the other side. the only downside is there is no waist belt, so you need to build up strength to carry all of it. also, with a 1 series body, the laptop sleeve won't fit.
i can also carry the same amount in my rolling mini trekker. it rolls and has a waistbelt. i routinely carry monopod with both of them.

The crumplers look like cool bags, but I will be traveling to Hawaii so a bit of weather protection would be nice. But thanks for bringing the Rolling Mini Trekker to my attention. I'm going to update my OP as the top two are the Kata and the Lowepro now since they both come with rollers. Rolling these things through a terminal sounds like a great idea to me now...much better than carrying the 15lb load.:)

Mike, the Expedition 7 looks to be too big for carry-on, but the 5 looks to be a good size for me. However, as I said, I'm leaning towards the ones with wheels.

Not sure about the size for carry on, but the Kata bags are built and designed like no other. Hard to go wrong with the Kata.

I know you're really happy with yours. I've never seen a Kata up close. But I have seen the lowepro bags and they look pretty much like regular backpacks to me with padded internals. I like that the Lowepro has the slip lock system in case I need to add to the bag. What about the Kata, in your opinion Doc, makes them better than all others?

I just recently have decided to begin looking also and have come up with the
Lowepro Computrekker AW
can hold a number of things plus a laptop and misc stuff.
