Well chuffed with this shot, not because it is a great picture, but becuase I took it hand held at 1/25 sec and it's hellish sharp!

This was on a tripod though as I wanted to use a graduated filter.

Just got one of these as part of a package deal/trade. Not sure if it's a lens I'll use much, but took a few (flat light, underexposed...) shots today in the snow bumming around. This is the only one I really liked, though due to the flat light not sure this will sway anyone towards this lens - the other brilliant pics in here should tho.

Yes! And at parties or what not, the 50 is pretty hard to get 2 people in. I guess I don't like working that far away. It would be great 1 on 1 with a model, I'm sure. I'll try it out, I've got some head shots scheduled in a week.

for headshots i dont really like the 50mm, i tried it a few times and wasnt happy with how it made the models face look, i ended up getting the 100mm for headshots and portraits and the 50mm still for full length body shots and from the torso up

85mm on crop for headshots is awesome, just like a cheaper 135L
28mm on crop is an awesome FL for all purpose stuff, if canon made a 45mm f1.2 i'd so buy it! 28mm on FF gets a little too wide with the perspective/focal distortion for portraits.. 35f2 or 35L would be perfect for strobist stuff on FF

lol yeah.. pretty much stays on my camera 24/7
most of the time ill do a shoot and then realise i havnt changed lens the whole time :P
thinking of selling all my lens's and getting a 50L..

i would be scared to get the 50L with all the horror stories you read on here aha. plus that is a big chunk of change when the 1.4 can get pretty close to the L iq wise (from what i seen)
davo_robbo
4th of January 2009 (Sun), 17:09
lol way overrated to how many good copies there are..
and 50mm 1.4 IQ is very average compared to the 1.2 =]

aha i dont know but i wont rule out the 50L until i get my hands on one and try it out. i think the only L primes i would get is the 135, and the 200 f2 or 1.8 if i can find one!!! aha
davo_robbo
4th of January 2009 (Sun), 17:46
what about the 85L?^^
i'd do 35L 50L 85L 135L and 16-35 for a lens setup
would be perfect!
DonJuanMair

depends in the type of photography tho dont you think?
davo_robbo
4th of January 2009 (Sun), 17:59
well if your getting a 50L + 135L +200L then why not fill the gap ;)
but yes.. depends on the shooters preffered FL's and budget :D (and love of bokeh)

On full frame I feel very at home with 50mm. I'd consider the 50L if I had a full frame body. Though it's a tough price to get over, resale value is great, remember that.
but if I had to, I could be a budget boy with a 5d and a fifty (1.4) for many years with no complaining (I think). Well, besides how slow the 1.4 focuses. ugh.

If you're referring to my orange photo, I took a ton of them and nearly had my wrist break off in the process. (Hence my oddly curved body trying to compensate haha)

I like the ability to take photos at night, hand-held, without messing with a tripod. I take photos while travelling for business. But on these trips, I travel light and my free time to explore a city is typically after work, in the evening. So I often use the 50 1.4 at 1.4 to give me this low-light hand-held capability.
Details for this sample photo: 40D ISO 1600 F1.4 1/100s (hand-held, of course)

for some reason the curve in your waist makes it look like you're rollerblading or something... not sure why i thought that but i still do even knowing you weren't

i love this lens and have no problem using it with ONE subject focused, as seen below.
here's the problem. like this evening, we went into the city and didn't want to bring all of my lens, so i just brought the 50 f/1.4. but when i'm confronted with taking a group shot, i'm at a loss as to what to do. excuse the newb question.....

And if you want to keep everybody in focus, either place them all at an equal distance from the lens, or else close down your aperture and add some light (or boost the ISO if that is all you need).

Hard to say exactly, at least not without knowing the lighting conditions. That might be a good starting point, but you mught want to bracket, at least for a few test shots.

this is my first post here and what better way to break the ice than posting few pictures taken with my favourite lens!
All pictures are from last night's celebration in the honor of the Roman emperor Diocletian who built the palace which developed in town of Split (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split) (Spalato) the biggest and most important town of the southern region of Croatia.

Well, the bokeh is less creamier than the Sigma (50mm/f1.4).... But it doesn't suffer from any focus issues, either. Seems like a good, 'safe' lens to buy if you don't mind the softness wide open.

LOL! Yes, they look old fashioned. Actually these were taken at the Pioneer Living History Museum here in Phoenix and it just seemed appropriate to use the B&W look - it also helps to focus the eye on the essential - color gets in the way with these - kind of:-)

just a thought... I had the same problem, or so I thought, with a different lens. My problem turned out to be that when I put my camera back in the bag, I accidentally turned the small viewfinder focus adjust dial by the viewfinder and set my camera out of focus. turned it back and everything was good. I may be the only bonehead that has done this and thought he broke his lens, but maybe not. :)

adorama's customer service department was closed for today and i got in contact with their selling department and they sounded like it should be no problem for a replacement...but the one i had for the few shots i got with it looked like i had a nice and sharp copy so hopefully the replacement will be the same.

haha yeah i thought that was it at first but after i looked at it that part on the lens that shows how far your subject is from you is stuck or it will barely move at all when you put it in MF and when you put it in AF it tries moving back and forth and makes a weird clicking noise... no idea how this happened because i always take great care of my lenses so its not like i was slamming it on the ground to see how well built i was. Im just dissapointed because the whole thing was like a big tease cause i can definitely see this lens being attached to my camera almost always haha oh well i guess ill have to wait another week untill i get a replacement...
Oh yeah and has anyone dealt with returning things to adorama? do they cover the shipping back and forth since its being replacement and are they usually pretty quick about it?
