Does this lens have a better image quality than the 50 f/1.8? or is it more pricey because of the extra stops?

I think yes, it has slightly better quality a bit, and not just the stops, the build is little bit better with this over 1.8 version, and also it has USM and 1.8 doesn't, focus in low light with this lens is faster and more accurate than 1.8, but in all cases it is not that much pricey, still both are so cheap lenses.

heres something i posted a while back on how i did some similar PP'ing

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=551202

post #13 has the PPing tutorial

basically, push the blacks a little, contrast a little, fill light and then up vibrancy and drop saturation and then fiddle with the white balance and then ajust the saturation accordingly in lightroom

I don't use mine that much but when I do, it's for some crazy shots that should never turn out.

I don't remember the specs on this shot but the 50 1.4 is the only thing that will get me a hand held shot in total darkness with just a camp fire for light. Especially using a 300D!

started a new series today I hope i can learn from and become creative with and also get a bit rid of my "inhibitions to be in front of the camera" I know very well i am not photogenic, but even we can have some fun fotos taken!

Laughter

1st of a series I hope to become creative with and develop.

Shot taken by voice activated camera, brand Archimedes!

+ my first try to do something really serious with photoshop, its way overdue that i learn something with that, result just so so but, i am learning!
whitened teeth (failed i know) and did something with the eyes and skin, and yes i found out i really do have slightly different eye colors, however i think in photoshop i accidentally must have aggravated that.

Thanks for the reminder that photography can catch more than "moments" -- they can bring tears as well. I've spent enough time in childrens wards to know what this can be about...

Yes, a common misuse of the word ... bokeh is a name for the "quality" of the out-of-focus areas, often specifically the rendering of out of focus highlights and details, and not the so much about the blur you get from short depth of field.

i been thinking the past few days if i should trade this off for a 17-40. what do you guys think? im starting to feel that 50mm is a weird focal length and that my copy isnt all that great in the smaller f stops. when i use my strobist kit its not as sharp as i would like it to be when im at f8 or so and thats with my vivitar at 1/16 power which is the lowest it will go!!! ahhh idk what to do

i havent used mine with my strobes yet, but i got it for the dof, i love the 1.4. as far as going with the 17-40, i have the tammy 17-50 f/2.8 and seen many test that compare the 17-40 f/4 L to the tammy.
heres one: http://hem.bredband.net/content/canon/tamron1750/tamronvscanon.html

and for an extra stop of light the tammy is as sharp if not sharper that the 17-40, plus you get f/2.8 so my suggestion would be to get a tammy. you can find on for around $325 to $350. and that is my main lens i used for my strobist stuff!

jcp2000

idk about getting a tammy the extra stop sounds nice but the stories you read on here with them. and dont get me wrong i love the low light capabilities of the 50 its just that since i got my strobist kit i havent used it much, i actually been using my kit lens which is putting up sharper shots then the 50 at smaller apertures. which i think is pretty sad it seems as if if i go higher then f5 its not as sharp i know for a fact 2.8 is my sweet spot for my 50 sharper then razor, but it just doesnt preform at the smaller stops

it's all really a matter of taste. and if you aren't getting the use out of the 50 then it seems smart that you find something that you personally would get more use out of.

and as for the tamron, i swear by mine. i have thought about upgrading to the 17-55 IS, but never the 17-40, it just doesnt seem to appeal to me at f/4. i see that you have the 70-200 f/4, as i do, and sometimes it seems like f/4 just isnt enough.

aha i have yet to run into that problem with my 70-200 but its also cause i dont do much night or low light shooting with it. if it comes down to that i just use the 50 but it hasnt really been on my body for a while now. soo the f4 thing is not really a issue with me i dont mind it if anything i will trade it and im the close future get another or just a 50 1.8 so i still have a low light lens

It is somewhat soft wide open, especially at the borders. But like most, it is quite sharp when stopped down. Both of these car shots were at f/5.6, which I believe is the sweet spot for this lens.

Is it SUPER DUPER SHARP..? Perhaps not. But it's very sharp from f/2 on. I love using it.

I know this image doesn't showcase the bokeh at all, but this is one of the first times I've stopped this lens down much at all, and I'm really impressed with the detail at 100%. Just thought I'd throw in an image that shows that it's not a one-trick pony. :)

I had the 1.8 for about 2 days, returned it and got the 1.4 and I think that it is well worth the upgrade. I can see myself getting the 1.2 someday but think that this is a great upgrade in the mean time.

i dont believe 5.6 is the "sweet" spot to this lens. when i had my copy 5 was ok but after that it started getting soft which was why i sold it. but the sweet spot atleast on my was 2.8 sharper then a new razor blade. When i started using my copy at smaller apertures due to using flash i notice it did not preform as well as it does under natural light at 2.8. did testing before i decided to sell it and even on a tripod it was still just way to soft for my liking so i sold the thing.

same happened to me when i had mine it was the only good lens i had so i loved it then i got my 70-200L and it pretty much sat in my bag all the time never really got mounted. when i did mount it 50mm started to seem like a awkward focal length so i sold it. picked up a sigma 24-70 2.8 and now that is my main lens.

Is it me or are there a lot of snobs who own the EF 50 f/1.2 lens that really talk this lens down?

Sure I'm no expert by any means but the way some talk they sound like this lens is a piece of garbage.

From what I've seen it's a very good lens for the money and I am probably going to get one. It just annoys me when some say the bokeh is absolutely terrible or that it's really soft wide open. Am I missing something?

The bokeh looks pretty good to me and I've seen a lot of samples at f/1.4 that look pretty damn good.

I can't at the moment justify spending $1000 more than what this lense cost for "better" bokeh and a sharper image wide open. I guess some need a crystal clear and perfect image at 100% crop.

Perhaps one day when I have the money I'll get into the L lenses but for now I don't see why some have to put this lens down. I guess they have to defend or justify spending over $1000 on a 50mm prime? It just urks me a bit.

drPheta
15th of March 2009 (Sun), 18:08
Yes, the bokeh is pretty good (it's more pentagonal then hex/octagonal or circular. BUT, it's still pretty good considering the lightweight/compact design.) Other than slight softness wide open, and CA in high contrast areas (so many lenses exhibit this anyway), the 50/1.4 is a fantastic lens.

Add that to the difficulty of shooting at f1.2, the $1000+ price difference, and the focus shift, it's hard to justify buying the 50L unless you had extra money burning a hole in your pocket.. or you absolutely needed f1.2 for your work.
