Well.. vs other L lenses.. the 50 doesn't produce the same vibrant colors. Sure photoshop can help, but theres a difference out of the camera. But yeah.. 1.4 is def the pick IMO unless you're raking in dough w/ your camera :D.. one day haha.

Is it me or are there a lot of snobs who own the EF 50 f/1.2 lens that really talk this lens down?

Sure I'm no expert by any means but the way some talk they sound like this lens is a piece of garbage.

From what I've seen it's a very good lens for the money and I am probably going to get one. It just annoys me when some say the bokeh is absolutely terrible or that it's really soft wide open. Am I missing something?

The bokeh looks pretty good to me and I've seen a lot of samples at f/1.4 that look pretty damn good.

I can't at the moment justify spending $1000 more than what this lense cost for "better" bokeh and a sharper image wide open. I guess some need a crystal clear and perfect image at 100% crop.

Perhaps one day when I have the money I'll get into the L lenses but for now I don't see why some have to put this lens down. I guess they have to defend or justify spending over $1000 on a 50mm prime? It just urks me a bit.

There's certainly pros and cons for the 50mm f1.4 but I can't imagine why someone, particularly the 50f/1.2 owners would talk down this fantastic lens as garbage.

I have both 50mm f/1.4 and the f/1.2 and love them both equally. Both lenses are capable of creating fine and garbage images.

What's nice bokeh and what's sharp are both a little bit a matter of taste and expectation. It does produce less than perfect bokeh in some circumstances and it does have some sharpness and CA problems wide open - but which very fast lens (at reasonable price levels) doesn't?

Garbage it ain't, but there are of course better lenses - at much higher prices.

Yes, we live in times where people only talk in terms of extreams. Which lens is the defacto best....mines bigger than yours....your not a real photograhy addict unless you have THIS list....ect
Sure, the Sigma 50mm f1.4 and Canon 50L are fine performers. But surely it's the end result that matters. I can tweek my 50 f1,4 pictures to match the contrast and colour from my L primes. But I'll eventually buy a 50L because it'll make my work flow a bit quicker.

The 50 f1,4 is a fine lens built to a very specific price point. In Canon land, you get what you pay for. It's not a pro build so it's relatively flimsy. But that doesn't stop it putting in a fine performance, even wide open in ccertain circumstances.

I'm blown away, I was looking at the 1.8 II, however with USM & the extra aperture size, I can justify spending the extra. So many wonderful shots, this lens is apparently a must have for everybody, and it's excellent for price, I'll be getting one of my own soon, and I'll be sure to contribute.

I am very interested though, can people share car shoot photos using this lens, ones with an emphasis on the vehicle and not it's surrounds? It's cool if you don't but I am very eager to see the sharpness and possibilities of what I could get.

Thanks, you'll hear from me again soon :D

Here is the original grab shot when I had it on the 5D. And the crop is a little more that 100% obviously, but I focused on the 'Questions Comments' part and it is acceptably sharp.

Hi,

Recently upgraded from the f1.8 Mk II.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3623/3428728546_0f281a888d.jpg

Build quality is a nice step up, but do people think it focuses quicker (Im not sure it does), also hard to tell if it hunts less as I thought the 50 f1.8 focused better on a 5D body compared to a 400D anyway. Havnt shot a series in low light at f1.4 yet will be interested to see how it works out.

i just took multiple pictures of each. and also i have a good idea of where center is when holding my camera down at my side. so i autofocus on the center dot, and have it on one shot focus so that i can move a little to each side while maintaining the subjects focus

Here's a shot, nothing great, but it's an alright shot. Just a tester, still getting used to the aperture better than 3.5 as my old highest and loving it. I'll get better ones soon, metal mount is awesome, so glad i didn't get the cheaper one.

dude! You're right! I looked at this one at the larger size, closed my left eye, and starred at the tree in the foreground. It's about as cool as looking at one of those stereo-thing-a-ma-pictures. :P

I've noticed similar effects from shots at this aperture. Not quite as powerful given the variety of 3D objects in this space. I'm trying to sell my 50mm 1.4 in light of having the 24-70.. but now I'm not so sure...

dont do it... The 50 is a great lightweight alternative when you need the extra stops of light or when you dont feel like lugging the 24-70 around. The extra bonus is you get nearly identical IQ from the 50 1.4.

+1... I have both and they both have their uses. The 24-70 is a lot bigger and heavier than you want sometimes.

Pearlallica

i'm benching 275 at the gym these days so weight is not the issue (nor size). hehe Opening up past 2.8 isn't ideal if sharpness is an issue. Either ya lose sharpness by added light from higher ISO, or ya lose sharpness by opening up the aperture. 1.4 is useful if you're only posting for screen purposes and you want more shallow DOF. Then there's the speculation about a 50mm 1.4 II which makes selling later harder.

The thing is that I'm on a pentium 4 system and I NEED the cash to upgrade to 64-bit/Quad-core/8GB-DDR3. I'm just making enough to pay the bills and disposable just isn't there. Hence the dilemma.

Thanks for the considerations guys. You've just made this harder. decisions, decision..

And on that note I'll post a shot of the 50 at 1.4

Some fantastic shots in here. I am going to get a Canon 450D next month and I think this will definitely be the first lens I go for when the time comes.
