I'm not sure if I should post this here, or in the 300D-forum, but here goes.

This is taken the other night of my wife and son and one of his toys. The light was awful, but he was in a very good mood, so I put on the 50mm and cranked up the iso to 1600, and this is one of the best shots - If not the best shot.

What do you think?

I think it is underexposed, and focussed on the wrong place, but it does not really matter what I or anyone else thinks of your shot.

If it means something to you, and you like it, then that is all that matters!

Thanks. I thought maybe you were using some sort of ambient light
because I'm just wondering how little light one can get away with when
using an f/1.4 lens. fastest I own is a 2.8.

It was almost completely dark out (besides the street lights) when I took this picture. So, if any other light was to help play out for it, it was the street lights. I also used a slow shutter speed to help bring in as much street and bokehed light as I could.

Funny thing, about a week ago I was considering sending you a PM. I think I've changed my mind though. Mine was a select I got from a gentleman that worked in a camera store. I think he went through every one for six months or something. :) I'll probably keep it until a non-shifting 50L lands in my camera bag.

The 85mm f1.8 is 10x better on the 40d. I used it religiously.

Now; on the 5dmkII; the 50mm f1.4 seems much better.

Hmmm. So you preferred the longer lens on the cropper and the wider on the FF?

yeah i was about to say, haha, thats a strange comparison, it almost shouldnt even be compared...

you are comparing a 130mm equivalent to a true 50mm...totally different.

comparing a 50mm on a crop camera to an 85 on FF would make much more sense.

i would even go so far to say it's the best lens that i ever owned. and i had
two Ls (well, zooms to be honest). here is a 100%-crop@1.4, center of the frame,
from the first test session today. camera is a 5d classic.
just some usm (maybe a touch too much) in ps. i think it's absolutely amazing.

Just got mine. I did some test shots with following aperture opening: f1.4; f2.8; f3.5; f5.6. It seems that from f3.5 my copy is getting really sharp, razor sharp at f5.6. Between f1.8 - f2.8, it performs just ok. Is this the expected performance for this lens?

hoya filter is reducing your quality....mine is tack sharp from f1.8 on...1.6 is okay..and 1.4 has a little color fringing and isnt very sharp...you may have just missed focus when at 1.8

(lens hood, hoya uv filter, tripod used for these shots)
Take that darn filter off...

Hmmm, your ISO is cranked up for one; that may not be it, but could have contributed. And, those strange shapes also show up in the bokeh right next to her, if you look closely. Amusingly perhaps, one of those is situated on her bosom, and the other on her armpit, almost like your camera recorded infra-red radiation in those areas... very peculiar indeed...

were you using a UV filter on the lens? They just look like reflections from a light source somewhere. Since they're both on a black shirt, they should be pretty easy to clone out.

Flares like that are common with inexpensive filters -- they are light sources bouncing between the filter and the lens. You can get flares occasionally without filters (like when shooting with the sun in the picture you occasionally see flaring) but it's more common with filters, and the cheaper (such as Tiffen) the more problems you'll have. In fact the candles in the background could very well have been the cause.

I personally don't use UV/protective filters, although a good case can be made for using one in strong wind with dust or sand. I do, though, use a hood pretty much all the time, both for protection and to block those outside pesky light sources.

In any case, the filters that both protect and provide the best quality are relatively expensive but are the only options if you want to prevent problems. Others will have to fill you in on the specifics -- I'm not up on them.

Yeah, I'd agree. Those artifacts seem to match up well to the orientation of the candles in the background. Your newer shot doesn't have them because you don't have a strong light source in the background.

If you decide not to go with a filter I would strongly suggest keeping a hood attached.

i did the same thing last week and i'm so much happier with this lens.
i didn't use the 1.8-version very often because of the inaccurate af

the 1.4-version is on a completely different level, you won't regret it !

The light is amazing! And the B&W gives it a real texture. I'm curious as to the event - what was going on here? I see camper chairs and another guy getting his head shaved in the background. A military enlistment drive?

Better go with the 50 1.8. Do you know for sure there is only an AF problem? Maybe it's just the start and some other things will go wrong in the future. Better save for a new 50 1.4 or go with the 1.8 version. You also have a good 35 2.0 lens for the money.

I wouldn't buy the broken one. This is optical stuff...

Might be a good deal. Test it out before you commit. And, try to lower the price even further.

The AF focus problem could minor and easy to repair. They are quite rugged to begin with.

It's a very sharp lens... provided you stop it down.... ;) Most of the shots in this thread are shot wide open, which is what the OP asked for so long ago. The lens, like most at f/1.4, has very shallow DOF, some coma, and some softness. If you really want sharpness wide open, I've heard (and seen samples) that the Sigma 50 f/1.4 is superior.

This lens is "good enough" for me most of the time, but I may actually be jumping ship for the Sigmalux myself.

Here is what the OP requested; perhaps someone could start a thread which highlights the stopped-down qualities of this lens.
Hi,

I'd be interested to see shots taken with the canon 50/1.4 lens at its largest aperture size. Images that leverage the shallow DoF would be interesting, as well as images that were shot @ f/1.4 because of the lack of light. Thanks!

FYI about this -- this archive was merged with the 50 1.4 "at any aperture" lens some time ago, so anything goes. Unfortunately, "they" did not change the title, which is leading to the present confusion and having brains on the verge of exploding, but I disclaim any responsibility:)!
