I can see it happening on the rim, but it's not apparent on the original, so I would not consider that major. It all depends whether you want to blow up that area of detail, when moving in would eliminate it anyway. Since it's so localized on the rim itself, and no other parts of the image, I think you could dismiss it. If it was also revealing itself on the edge of the car body, the tires or the fence, then I would see that as a problem.

Nice car though!

My 50mm does the same thing on high contrast areas of a photo at 1.4. I Don't worry about it. I think this lens just does that.

Do the rest of you find the same thing happening?

By Dutch standards, that one is tiny compared some others posted here (http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/kathryn77/6/1243895888/tpod.html) in Scheveningen, Netherlands.

It was a Sandcastle competition with a Disney theme. They really were works of art!
Two more shots, the first is the top of the one behind the Elise:

haiko, looks like you got yourself a sharp one! Nice shots. :)

yes, i believe my coopy is sharp (but the images shown here had some sharpening applied in DPP). however, at 1.4 not much of the image is sharp and it is soft compared to f2.2 and onwards. i think that the softness of fast lenses is actually a plus.
hence, I compared my copy to a copy of a frined and remarked that my focusing ring was not running so smooth as his. further, during focusing, my usm-motors do make a more grinding sound than on his copy, which first bothered me when i figured that. but in the end, it gives me some beautifull shots, which is far more important...

I agree love that shot of #3 with the girl looking just a tad at him :)

thanks Littlefield, i do appreciate that you like my shot #3. However, i have to watch out for staight horizons :-). but it's a bit tricky to do that for snapshots...

I just got one of these lenses. There's a bit of a learning curve, since I'm used to zoom lenses with image stabilization. This lens definitely teaches you how to be a better photographer, since you don't have the luxury of zooming in/out.

One thing I want to run by everyone. When shooting at f/1.4, is it good practice to use spot focusing? When I enable all my AF points and shoot at f/1.4, the picture is totally out of focus at times. Too much variation in depth I'm assuming. Thanks!

tonylong
19th of October 2009 (Mon), 14:05
Zone,

You definitely do want to use spot focusing at these wide apertures and avoid focus/recompose (use an off-center focus point if it is appropriate). As you've seen, the depth of field is so narrow that if using auto point selection you can pretty much guarantee that the camera will miss your main point.

I had my 1.8 for probably 2 years. I noticed a huge difference in my upgrade. Although i do have the 5d2 and only shot with the 1.8 on my 5d2 for like 2 months then upgraded to the 1.4 (used my 1.8 mostly on my 40d body). So i'm not sure what you will notice if you are using a crop body. My lens is incredibly sharper than my 1.8 was and the build quality actually feels like a lens. The bokeh is much more pleasing as well.

Hi Anthony, the shots look good. Just one suggestion, for the first shot, you would want most of that dish in focus. Every time I look at that dish, my eyes are instantly drawn towards the center/left-side of the dish, perhaps due to the large piece of mango/pumpkin(?) there, but only the right hand side is in focus. :)

Food photography can be a challenge. Not sure what kind of lighting you used, but window-lighting works surprisingly well if you don't want to set up lights.

krb
4th of November 2009 (Wed), 09:41
I agree that the food shots are good but could use more depth of field. The gnocchi looks good that way but on the other two and for most food shots you'll want the entire dish in focus. Getting the whole thing in sharp focus may not be possible but it should at least not be noticeably out of focus.

The shots do work well however: I'm feeling hungry. :)

I would invest in a cheap table top tripod so you can stop down and still use ambient light for the food. You've most definitely got the composition down though (not that I'm some food photog guru :D ). Love the inclusion of the drinks in the Out of Focus area, looks neat and professional.

DonJuanMair
4th of November 2009 (Wed), 12:58
thanks for the responses guys, yeah it was hard, i see what you your saying about the pumpkin piece. I was using a tripod and one 580exII off camera left. The ambient light was very dim, only one window, the entrance!

Yep. The only reason I'd prefer an xxD (or higher) would be due to the micro-adjust feature. Otherwise, you're cleared for take-off.
