I actually can't say. I just learned the 50L we have (co-own with my bro) had some focus issues, or so that's what Canon says. I was finding the focus was hit or miss and micro adjusting wasn't helping so we had sent it in. Should be back soon.

If it comes back and performs better than this, then it's a winner by all means. However, I don't find the 1.4 all that sluggish or lesser cool to use though.

The only clear win the 50L has is the bokeh quality. Much more smooth.

I can see myself using this lens leisurely.

Some from the park today. Flat lighting and I didn't have my flash handy, but I am so pleased with this lens. I thought I'd get rid of it once my 85/1.2 arrived but at the moment, it looks more likely that I'll keep the 50/1.4.

Thanks... I wish I had done this kind of stuff in school, or at least when I was a bit younger. I didn't start really shooting seriously until I was 36, basically about 2+ years ago. I don't see things the way my younger friends do, but I'm working on it.

My shooting style right now is more mechanical/procedural than creative. All the technical stuff makes perfect sense to me... got a ways to catch up on composition and creativity though.

3) f/2.8 1/80 ISO 200

My lens came yesterday. First impressions, beautiful piece of glass. Shooting at f/1.4 seemed soft but can and will give some cool dreamy effects to photos. f/2 was noticeably sharper than any f stop on the 18-55 IS. I don't think my kit lens is ever going to go back on...

Suggest you get as many shots as possible before he gets mobile... getting focus is next to impossible after that ;)

that's when I use the excuse of needing to upgrade to a 1d series for it's faster focusing. ha ha

Congratulations. You now have 4 very fine portrait lenses, and a great new walkaround lens for your 40D.

Curious - are you left-eye dominant or are you moving toward the Joe McNally grip (facilitated better by adding a battery grip to your 40D)?

All taken with the Rebel XT

Definitely still love this lens, after all this time. Its beatup, the AF doesn't work anymore and I can't stop it down (a year ago I had pulled off the mount and tore out the contacts by mistake). It can still create magic albeit at a limited capacity.

there are a few other current or former owners roaming around this site that i know of ;)

I've owned this lens for years, but I had no idea this lens could produce such nice bokeh (it used to produce such unpleasant bokeh). Or maybe it's because I'm now using this on a FF body (5D Classic).
