so what you're saying is that you use USM two times in small amounts instead of one time in a larger amount?
See this: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/contrast-enhancement.shtml
Only one pass of USM is required for this.

How do you get such clear images with saturated unflat color?
these pix were taken at f3.2, f2.8 and f3.5 (according to the exif data) so cannot be compared to other shots taken at f1.4

Actually, what they are describing in the article is the second step of USM, which is what Samiad and cosworth were talking about.
Quoted from the article:
(This is done as a seperate step from whetever settings you may use within Unsharp Mask for your normal image sharpening).

No, it looks like the second pass of USM is to add contrast. I find the low contrast is what makes things look 'foggy'. Dial in some contrast and you'll see the image come to life.
Exactly. The second pass is to add "global" contrast.

That is the second pass I mentioned. But it still does not sharpen the image.
Hence my two pass use.

yeah i'm trying to make a decision on this lens since i would like the 35/1.4 but 50/1.4 fits my budget more for now.
I've been reading about contrast and softness @ 1.4 that's probably what I want to get this lens for (to use at 1.4) but if it's too soft then i'll wait for the 35/1.4 instead

I can't speak for the 35 1.4 but I am pleasantly surprised by the sharpness of my 50 @ 1.4. It's much sharper than I expected it to be. Very usable.

would you say the 50/1.4 is a big improvement over the 50/1.8 IQ wise?

Having used both I would say the the 1.4 is worth the extra, I have noticed the focus is better than the 1.8. I have also seen about f2.0 it' get very sharp.
The colour also seems better.
Have seen a bit of CA maybe more than the 1.8 (cant check now as it has gone) but some shots you dont see it all.

Actually I believe they all were, if not very close to it. It was taken in a rain forest and it was vry dark, the pictures are deceving when it comes to the lighting...I believe the only hting I messed with was the ISO. They are PP a bit and cropped....

I don't use my 50/1.8 much, but now that I'm getting into outdoor fashion/portraits, I find playing with my frined's 1.4 lens and that shallow DOF pretty nice to work with (compared to my 2.8 lens)
85/1.8 is pretty nice but a bit too close for my taste, 35/1.4 is a bit too $ for now (ok just picked up a 17-55 so got to hold off for a bit for now... heh)
I really don't know, I've got to stop looking at lens and start taking some more pix!! =)
but yeah i wouldn't mind getting the 1.4 for the shallow DOF

I like this lense alot for the bokeh and sharpness, but the low light shooting is great. This was taken the other night in very low light with an iso of 800 on an XT so a little noisy.

Hello all,
Please inform us of the aperture that was used if you post images that are not taken at f/1.4 (which is the prequisite for this thread, but I'm sure nobody minds other apertures as long as we're informed whether it was 1.4 or something else). Some of the recent photos in this thread clearly are taken with smaller apertures. Thanks :)

Click for a larger/properly sharpened pic. The background is a bit unfortunate. Would've got more blur with a full frame camera and 85/1.8, I'd guess.

i just recently put in an order for a 30D, my first DSLR. choosing a camera body was easy. choosing a lens was quite the task, especially with the difference of expert opinions. but after countless hours of research it came down to the 50/1.4 or the cheaper 50/1.8. i'm sure i could attain great shots with the 1.8 lens, but after looking through this thread i'm glad i ordered the 1.4 lens. i can't wait to post my pix here.

Since this thread is the one linked in the "lens sample" thread, it doesn't matter if its not at 1.4. And since it would be a waste to make another 50 1.4 thread just to have the other apertures, this will do.
Really, it would be more useful to have more than just f/1.4 so people can get a better idea of the lens.

He was talking about a different lens (the 50/1.8 ).
I would disagree with what you're saying given the title and inital intention for this thread (which was to get some inspiration on how to use the special properties of the lens creatively), but I'm not looking for an argument here, so I just hope people would state the aperture they used. Anyway, thanks for everybody who replied sofar :)

One reason for the difference is that these fine images were shot @ f/2.5, f/2.8, f/3.2 and f/3.5 (according to EXIF information).
I also use the lens @ f/2.8 most of the time in order to have sufficient DOF, f/2.0 if I need the light.

Interesting. Maybe f1.4 is less useful than I thought. I already love the results I get with my EF-S 60 macro when I use it for low light portraits at its widest ( f2.8 ). Maybe I should stop lusting after the 50 F1.4? Anyone compared these two lenses at f2.8 and above?
Andy_T
20th of August 2006 (Sun), 15:53
Anyone compared these two lenses at f2.8 and above?
Mike, take a look at the reviews of these two lenses over at www.photozone.de !
The 60/2.8 is very sharp wide open, and the 50/1.4 is only marginally better when stepped down to f/2.8.
Actually, this is not too surprising for me, as it is quite difficult to produce such a fast lens with good image quality. The advantage of the 50/1.8 is that you can use the f/1.4 if you have to. And it does have some advantages over the 50/1.8 (that is also very sharp at f/2.8 ), mainly the better bokeh.
Best regards,
Andy

Hey guys I know this is a retarded question, but i have a 350D and am getting this lense for christmas. Someone said this lense is like the equivilent to 85mm...im kinda lost. is the like the 50mm on my kit lense? or equivilent to 85mm on my 75-300mm.

It will be a 50 same as your zoom lens. Compared to fill frame digi cameras and 35 mm cameras it is an 85. Your camera is a crop sensor or smaller sensor camera. Your camera is like multiplying 1.6 to the mm of the lens. Thus, the 50 is an 85 on a 350D. Sorry for any spelling or grammar mistakes... Typing on cell phone.

Yeah, what Rhino said
I still dont understand why so many people have to keep qouting what a FL would be on a FF frame camera, especialy to people who are new to SLR.
It make no difference what it is on a FF camera IMO.
you just use the Focal lengths as a guide. so you knonw 14mm is wider than 35mm etc

These are a few quick snaps. Just to give you perspective difference with tubes. No PS except WB, sizing for web, and sRGB color profiling. All shot on the 50 at F / 5.0 and 800 ISO. 1st shot is 50 W/O tubes at closest focusing range. 2nd is with 12mm tube.

That is done with the 12 + 20 + 36mm tubes staked on the 50. ISO 800, F# 5.0. I shot 4 or 5 images with the focus on different sections then combined them in PS.

Many thanks. I was actually standing on tip-toes to get the angle and leaning against a wall at the time. I didn't have to move anything to get the composition right - the room-maid did a great job for me. Taken at the Hotel Central in Barcelona.
Yeah, it can be a struggle to get nice, intimate shots indoors with the 50. But when I happen to pull them off, I'm very pleased with them.

What's your EXIF info for that particular shot JCR? I'm curious because I wanted to do some cool b&w of my nephews in the coming weeks. Currently run with the 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.8 for portrait work. Do not own a Speedlite just yet as I work mostly in studio, but will probably break down and buy the 580EX by March.
Thanks in advance.. :)

New to the forums, and have a dumb question. So its been said that the EF 50 on a crop camera actually would have a field of view of a 85 on a full frame, in the above example. What about the EF-S lenses? I guess those can't be used on full frame cameras, so basically my question is, is a EF-S 60 on a crop frame gonna have the same/similar field of view as a EF 60 on a full frame?
Hope I made sense....
I have a XTi, and just ordered the EF 50 1.4 and a 580EX. :D

(Experts can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure I have it right this time. :) )I'm no expert, but you have it right. The crop factor is a camera sensor factor, not a lens factor. Any lens placed on the crop camera will be affected in some way by it.

You are right. The S series lenses just have smaller image circles. So the lenses are smaller and lighter.

Yes, and going into Photoshop or Elements and choosing Image->Mode->Grayscale or Enhance->Adjust Color->Remove Color are not the ways to do it.
