I also thought the same, funny.
I love this lens also. I purchased it along with a 24-70 2.8 L and have had the 50 on my camera a while now. I love the 24-70 also just wanna learn each lens. I shouldny have bought 2 lenses at the same time, but the money was burning a hole in my pocket.
By the way, is the 1.4 the nifty fifty or is that the 1.8?

Already post this but here it is. Shot at 1.4 with 12mm tube. It's a little fuzzy but I took several shots of this composition, adjusting the point of focus a little every time, and this was the sharpest one. I'm not too disapointed. It kind of matches with the image.

I really want to buy this lens, but all the reviews I've read say and show that f/1.4 has worthless MTF. Your really getting f/2 - 2.8 with this lens, so they say. These images certainly show otherwise.
I love these images and I'd really like to own this lens. I'm shooting with an xTi. Mabye that would be the problem?? Digic II and all.

There is some halation at 1.4, but it is basically gone at 1.6. Overall it is very usable at or near wide open as most of these photos suggest. I think most reviewers pixel peep a little too much.

It can be soft wide open depending on where your subject is but you can get good results from it if the subject is near, TBH I usually stop down to 1.8 where there are no problems at all, stop down a little further and it's truly razor sharp.

Can a lens be too sharp? I've seen at f3.5-5.6 that this lens is so sharp that it shows too much detail. This is especially true for my field of photography as I do glamour/creative and find that I have to soften faces a little bit. Trying to get to the point where I'm doing very little PP. :-)

Yes, sometime it can soo sharp. I took a pic of my niece and since she's a teenager at the stage of Pro-Active-ness, it really showed every pores. Not very flattening at all. :)

Canongrats! ISO is basically the sensitivity of the sensor. Like adjusting gain on a mic in audio. Higher ISO ratings will in turn introduce more grain. The dof is very small at 1.4. For most applications I found 2.5 to be the sweet spot for the 50. To test the sharpness oh 1.4 mount the camera on a tripod and shoot at something still.

Nonetheless, it's not really a true example of the sharpness of the lens. Do you actually prefer it this way or are you just trying to make up for the lens' inherent softness under f/2?

I am not experienced enough to comment, I just liked that picture, but then I wonder how many of all these pictures have not been edited at all in this thread.
I look at so many of the pictures on these forums, and wonder how they get them so sharp and clear, with such a controlled color and light balance.
but although I have taken snaps for many years, I have just started to get a more serious in the last few weeks, and looking to try and improve my abilities from taking pictures, to post production, and printing,

I particularly like the pose on the second shot. It looks like a class photo at the beginning of the academic year :)
That lens is really good!

Just got the 50 1.4 the other day (have been stalking this thread and others for some time) and what I noticed so far compared to what I have: focus is slower than my L which I expected but is manageable and I have to be careful of light source as it effects photograph. These are straight out of the camera with no PP...shot at f1.6. You can tell about the light thing....Fat Matt's wife was standing by the sink with a 60 watt bulb and it really shows. Nice lense though for the money and what it provides.
Kudo's to all that shared and led me down this path....I think..now I want my 24-70 :)

Hi,
this is my first post here and what better way to break the ice than posting few pictures taken with my favourite lens!
All pictures are from last night's celebration in the honor of the Roman emperor Diocletian who built the palace which developed in town of Split (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split) (Spalato) the biggest and most important town of the southern region of Croatia.
here are the pictures,

So far I love it. It's very sharp, and very fast. It is twice as heavy as the 1.8mm though. The AF is much faster, and the build is much better. You get what you pay for in both cases. Nothing against nifty, the 1.4 is just a $300 upgrade. I also picked up the hood with it and it's very nice as well. Much better than nifty's hood.

yeah, the beach 2 are outdoors AWB, jpegs and fine. The first one is inside with both CFLs and indecent lights, no flash, so it's as good as can be expected IMHO (but yes, it's yellowish/orange) The dog and darth tater are both flash inside and look about right to me though...
