yeah, the beach 2 are outdoors AWB, jpegs and fine. The first one is inside with both CFLs and indecent lights, no flash, so it's as good as can be expected IMHO (but yes, it's yellowish/orange) The dog and darth tater are both flash inside and look about right to me though...
I assume you using RAW, then you can control colors and WB, but nevertheless, nice shots from your lens on 5D, congrats and have fun!!!

Well the f/1.4 has much faster AF, a much better build, and a nice manual focusing ring. It also has slightly better IQ... But for the money the f/1.8 is an awesome value.
So if you need to MF very easily, or you need fast AF the f/1.4 is worth the extra, otherwise the f/1.8 is great. I recently upgraded, and both are great, the AF is what made me upgrade though.

ummm, yeah, the focus ring on the f/1.8 can't touch the ring on the 1.4. I'm a huge fan of the 1.8 and recommend it to everyone as I feel everyone should have at least one prime and can learn tons with a fast lens, but the 1.4 does have some added qualities the 1.8 does not. You do have to pay for them, but it's worth it IMHO if you can afford it.

Hi folks,
I've been reading and lurking for a few weeks now. I just bought a Rebel xti camera, and after reading here a bit I saw a survey for most recommended first lenses, and the 50mm lens was pretty highly recommended. My wife and I intend on using this one quite a bit. I thought I'd share the first couple of pictures I took with it.
BTW, between myself, my wife, and this little girl, this lens was dropped the day after I gave it to my wife! Hopefully, I'll get it back from the repair shop today in as good as new shape!

That's strange as I thought the f/1.8 was sharper in general over the f/1.4 lens, infact ive seen quite a few tests showing this.
I have also read that the 50mm f/1.4 performs a lot better on the 5D than it does on any other camera, although I havent seen any tests to show this yet.

ok, but is it more accurate? I have the nifty, and I love it, but the thing is, I get lots of OOF shots. I am sooo ready to upgrade to the 1.4 if it means a more accurate AF, not just faster. Is the 1.4 FTM? I mean, does it has ring-USM? or is it micro USM? I don't know if it makes a difference (I don't really use FTM to fine tune focus) but what I want to hear from experts here is if the 1/4 is a lot more accurate, and if it has trouble focusing in low light.
The nifty is a great starter lens, and shows you what a prime can do, it shows you what a shallow DOF can do for you, but I am ready to move on, I simply hate the AF on the Nifty.
Joel
jacobsen1
1st of October 2007 (Mon), 11:54
Not sure if it's more accurate as I've never had issues with either. Yes it's FTM. Maybe the paper thin DOF is giving you a hard time? I find if I rock forward or backward AT ALL when shooting at f1.4~f1.8 that will give me OOF shots, but it's 100% my fault...
joruiz
1st of October 2007 (Mon), 13:56
nah.. it happens even at smaller apertures, at least on my Nifty, it just misses focus. Sometimes I turn on my 430EX flash, set it manually to the lowest power and move the head up (so I have the smallest amount of light coming from the flash) and use the focus aid it provides, and then my Nifty gets a lot more accurate. So almost every time I use my nifty I use my flash too, just because of the focusing aid :( ...
jacobsen1
1st of October 2007 (Mon), 16:03
FYI, you can use CFs to set the AF assist to on but set the flash fire to off and you'll be able to do the same w/o setting it to low and aiming at the ceiling...

Hey thanks! Yea that was my thoughts also. I also did bump up the USM but the hair went bad (as it always does), and I think it's plenty sharp. Plus my goal was to keep it very soft in tones, the higher contrast killed it.......for me at least.
......and yes it was the Mk2n......actually sold the 40D. I need to fix my sig. Fell into the hype of the 40, plus I don't need 2 bodies. Very content with the mk2 after trying the 40D.

OK better give the details here, then. Happy you seem to like the pictures. :)
More or less copy/paste from PM:
I used aperture priority mode and the first one is @F1.4, second one @F1.6, third one at F1.4 and fourth one @F2.2.
That lense is fantastic at car pictures and very very sharp. Only downside is that you need some distance to the car to get all of it in the frame.

I don't know why you made it seem like a huge mystery about how you shot those.
In other words all you did was shoot wide open then a few increments above that.
Why go and PM someone when they ask you in public like it was some huge secret.

Yep! I didnt see the response to this thread before I answered the first PM. So to (try and) not look like a dork, I also wrote here that I PM'ed him. When I discovered that more people were interested I wrote it here too.
The exif info is all in the pictures. I thought everybody checked that.:)
You should get the exif info add-on for Firefox! (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3905)
So its not a big mystery if you have a look at the topic.

I think the DOF on some of these is too shallow and it actually detracts from the image. The 1.4 DOF can get paper thin but I don't think it's appropriate in all pics.
The black dog by ag93 is great since the whole dog is sharp, nice control. A couple of the kid shots are nice, but I think the blurry ears take away from the overall image by drawing attention away from sharp eyes.
Just my 2 cents.

Just got mine today! I slapped on 68mm worth of Kenko tubes and snapped one of my lens cloth. I'm really digging this little lens. It's not as bad at 1.4 as people make it out to be.
The right shot is 0.5 sec @ f/1.4
I cheated on the left shot. It's a 100% crop from 30sec @ f/10 with a little PP.

The more I look at images in this thread, the more I realize just how soft the 50mm f/1.4 is wide-open. It's kind of disappointing.

The more I look at images in this thread, the more I realize just how soft the 50mm f/1.4 is wide-open. It's kind of disappointing.
Wouldn't it be correct to assume though that the softness is a natural result of a very shallow DOF? I mean, when you shoot at 1.4, the margin for error (achieving correct sharpness on your subject) is very small. Looking at most of these portraits here and from the shots I've taken myself at 1.4, the DOF measures around half an inch or so. Achieving correct focus with such shallow workable DOF means you are bound to get some softness - even around your focusing area.
Of course, I never tried any other f1.4 or even faster lenses to compare the above assumption so I base it solely on my own experience with this particular lens.
Tony-S
25th of December 2007 (Tue), 09:51
I'd sure like to think so, but the reality of it is that it doesn't seem to be the case. I have no reluctance to shoot my 30mm at f/1.4, but not my 50mm. It could be the extra 20mm makes that much difference, but it still isn't that appealing to me. I haven't used my FD 50mm f/1.4 for years, but I don't recall ever seeing softness issues on every shot I took at f/1.4 with it.
