Certainly is :) (both comments, haha) I've been waiting to adopt my whole life. It's been immensely rewarding so far (even if I've lost more sleep than with a toddler ).

My dog was cage trained rather quickly. Maybe 3 months. By then she knew how to ask to go outside. She wasn't much of a chewer either. I think I broke her of that when I put red hot chilli pepper juice on the corners of the table she did chew on. She never chewed anything ever again. She has a nasty habit of bringing leaves, sticks, rocks, etc inside when she comes in. I don't know why. We love her though!

A buddy and I were lucky enough, back in the early 90s to get the entire city of Chicago to ourselves. We skateboarded all over the city. It was on a memorial day and the whole town was gone. Great experience I'll never forget. We even jumped on these odd conveyer belts that vertically climbed parking towers. Dangerous but thrilling.

We only put her in the cage when we left the house or when we went to bed. Then later when we went to bed we could trust her to lay in bed with us. After she was potty trained we folded up the cage and put it away until she had puppies.

Amazingly, when I set it back up before she had puppies she went right to it to have her puppies in it. She knew it was a safe place for them. She's very smart.

It is cool though, hes a german shepherd/hound mix and we think he may have a touch of husky in him based on personality... though he hated his cage before, while the door to it is open he loves just hanging out in it, we put some blankets over it to make it dark so we figure its because it seems like a cave or something

and because I can, heres another!

Just got another copy of this lens (third time now that I will be owning it). Finances have been tight so I decided to trade my 50L for one of these and put the difference in cost towards bills / expenses.

Just did some testing around my folks backyard and this copy is great wide open thankfully! Probably the best of the three I've had.

By the way: What is the advantage of buying this lens over the Nifty Fifty (if we don't consider build quality and a slightly wider aperture)?

I really want a 50mm, but at three times the price, is the 1.4 worth it?

It's an all-around better lens. Better build quality, better focusing, nicer blur, better IQ (especially at wider apertures). Yeah, it's 3x the price ... but it's still one of the cheaper lenses out there, and a great value.

I have both, I got the 50 1.8 II as a gift to see if I liked the concept of a fixed focal length lens, when I realized I did the 50 1.8 just didn't quite cut it, the build is great on this lens, the AF is much better, quicker, quieter, and more accurate, the image quality is great and it gets some rather nice bokeh depending on your background and such... It is definitely worth it for me.

Thanksgiving Day
Today i have a whole new appreciation of what i have, I was truely blessed.
Our church went to serve breakfast at a homeless shelter on thanksgiving morning, seeing young one's in the shelter truely breaks my heart for i myself has one. This child capture my attention for being so playful and cheerful inspite of her uncertain sorrounding, you bless me. i give thanks with a greatful heart.

Bottom pic. Normally I look at "eyes" on portrait shots. The fact that she is looking down and can't see her eyes is what I think makes this interesting to me. Thanks for sharing. ;)

Background bokeh is good too. ;)

pretty sure you’re using this lens on a crop sensor, and yes, it is kind of tight on crop. however, on full frame i find the focal length works much better for me

Same here. Although I like it on my 40D as well as my 5D Mk II. It's pretty versatile.

I am really happy with my new copy of this lens. I was really bummed at first to give up the 50L, but I much prefer the size and weight of this lens. Though admittedly the MF ring is nowhere near as nice ;)

Do most people shoot using a tripod with this lens? I normally shoot handheld and a lot of it ends up less that tack sharp.

Should I use a tripod, boost my shutter speed, etc?

Yes Steve, handheld is fine if your shutter speed is fast enough for the subjects' edges and your aperture isnt wide open (really hard to focus at 1.4). This thing excels at 4.0+ f-stops from what ive encountered, but 1.4 is fantastic with a tripod.

We should also write what camera body we used here. As I look through the hundreds of pages in this thread, I couldn't help but realize that the bodies that cost twice as much usually give out images that look twice as good.

Our 60Ds, 550Ds, 7Ds, etc all look decent but Jordan Voth's 5D Mark II's images blow them all out. Not to be negative, but I just want to some 60D shots that look good too lol!

550D, 60D, and 7D essentially use the same sensor. 5D has its own sensor, plus it's FF so there's that difference as well.

Any tips to AF this lens at 1.4?
Such as what AF modes and such?
I manage just fine, but I feel I have to continually make sure EVERY photo is in focus right after I shoot it.
My focus-recompose method doesn't work with such a large aperture. :(

one shot AF
and use the point closest to the subject you want in focus

It was a foggy night a few days ago and I snuck outside and took a few photos... Not sure if these work or not.

First try with some longer exposures. My older Rebel XT captures quite a bit of noise on longer exposures.

It has been a while since I've been shooting... unfortunately 20 credits in one semester has caught up with me the last 3 or so weeks, but for one of my large final projects a "snapshot headshot" was needed, I decided to do a bit more than that and go for something I haven't done... a self headshot that I actually like.... that being said I suck at posing....

regardless, 2 strobes, 1 YN460-ii on the background to blow it out and 1 YN560 into a qbox24 camera right and up, reflector (white) below
