I did my own brief research on other 50mm lenses and I found the LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/1 on Leica M system seems to produce unbelievable bokeh and sharpness when shot wide open but you pay a BIG price for it.

The Nocti isn't that sharp wide open, and its bokeh is a love/hate thing, for what it's worth. I love it, and the whole signature of the Noctilux, personally. But for sharpness, it's the Summicron or Summilux that you want.

I'm ok with it at f/1.4 but I much prefer my 35L at that aperture.

as far as the noctilux goes, that is an amazing lens for an amazing camera system. I used to shoot with that combo while in school. it was quite fun!

I think the point of this thread has evolved past it's title. I mean, it's not like there's ANOTHER lens sample 50 1.4 thread for other apertures? As long as you post the aperture, it shouldn't really matter at this point.

Bingo. I bet more than half the images in this thread were shot stopped down to some degree.

So why have guidelines if everyone feels like breaking them ?

There is no real guideline that members have to follow in regards to these lens archive threads, hence why everyone posts whichever aperture setting, and not necessarily 1.4. We're on the 61st page of this thread now, and with 900+ posts - how many people do you think have had a problem with the majority of these photos not being shot wide open? It's all about sharing photos with a particular lens, which is essentially what these lens archive threads are meant for.

shooting wide open does not always show what a lens is capable of.

Actually, if you check out the main page for the threads on lens image samples, there is no mention of f/1.4 other than the name of the lens. The same goes for every lens and there are many listed.

All the lense threads are for sample shots of the lenses. In all situations. You can see what I mean here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=141406)when you look up the 50 1/4 you wont see any mention of limiting the aperture of the sample shots. Check out the thousands of pages in all the posts for yourself.

Its only inside the thread where a sub-heading was placed that it says "Post your Canon 50/1.4 @ f/1.4 images!".

As you can see, most people dont see that, or dont care, because the intent of these threads is to see what the lenses can do. That being said, just for those that are a bit retentive, I put f/5.6 in my post.

The cause is likely that the thread was added to the large lens sample archive at a later date....but the way the community is using it is definitely as a lens sample archive, not a "it must be at f/1.4" archive.

If you spend a lot of time at this forum, you will note that people post separate mini threads if they want to see photos with exact specifications beyond the lens type, ie a 50mm f/1.4 with images taken only at f/1.4 or similar.

Jesus, beat a dead horse why don't you.

Here's how it works. Threads with a lot of images in them from a particular lens get TURNED INTO the example/sample threads. So this thread STARTED LIFE as a "post images taken @ 1.4" thread but then for WHATEVER REASON it was turned into a post images from this lens thread. Now it has BOTH. Get an exif viewer and check them for yourself.

There will be shots from the lens wide open AND stopped down to varying degrees. Get over it already.

Hey, DallasPhoto,

You've got a good eye, keep it up! It's true that you can post a lot of pics without comment, but that doesn't mean that they're not appreciated. Sometimes people just get a certain button pushed that elicits a comment -- otherwise there are pics that get posted here that would be overwhelmed by thousands of "Great Shot!" comments!

Interesting, what calibration method do you use?

I'm looking at them on an uncalibrated monitor at work, and they're definately too cool. But when I look at them on my monitor at home (calibrated with Huey Pro) they look ok. Maybe there's something wrong with the calibration!

You've got me worried now! Anyone else think they're blue?

First: bit red in the midtones maybe. I'd call it neutral enough.
Second: kinda sepia,
third: neutral,
fourth: kinda sepia

New to DSLR photography and just getting used to it. Not really shooting in total manual yet... mostly aperture priority. These are my first postings of pics here.

These are with the XSi (love it) and my 50 1.4 lens, which I take most pics with. The first is my little cousin on the day of her First Communion (yesterday) and the second is my twin sister's first kid on her first day on earth (this past Tuesday). Both are shot with available light.

The lens is great and definitely recommended. It gets pretty good reviews from just about everyone and is readily available in the For Sale classified section on this site.

Which begs the question for everyone here... this lens seems to be just about the most sold lens here, from what I can tell. Why is that?

I have a little suggestion. I'm fairly new to the forums here and DSLR's in general. I was thinking I'd eventually get the 50/1.4. This past weekend I sprung for the 50/1.8 and I'm very happy with it. I just find its a little too zoomy for me. With the 50mm on an XTi its the equivalent of an 80mm. I'm actually glad I got the cheaper one personally. It has shown me that I would prefer to spend the extra $$$ on something like a 28 - 35mm fast prime instead. I just found I didn't always have enough room indoors - walls get in the way. Anyways, something for you to consider.

Best suggestion I can make is to one up at a place you can easily return it/exchange it after a few days testing. I think that will give you a better idea what I'm saying and then you can decide if its for you or not. :)

Nifty Fifty is the 50mm f1.8. It's around $80. The 50mm 1.4 is roughly $300.

I really like to shoot in very low light and with no flash!... so, that presents a problem!.
I continue to pursue how to do this and its a real challenge for me being simply an enthusiastic amateur.

So, I decided to buy the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens in the hope that it would help me with this problem. I'm enclosing two (2) shots taken with the 50mm 1.4 lens.

One was taken in the daylight and the other in a very very dark Cabaret club.
All in all, I'm quite happy with this lens. I do get some great "Bokeh" at very large apertures.

And, I never ever use any Photoshop to doctor up my shots." I do try to get it right the first time"

My Mother: 88 years old and sharp as the sharpest part of this shallow DoF photo.

Set for Tv 1/50, hand held, no flash, f 1.6 selected. Program mode with a single focus point.

I just had the lens a short time when we went for a visit. Camera is new, too, though I had an earlier version of the Rebel. I am pleased for a first go with this lens.

My first post on this forum. I am learning a lot and enjoying even more than that.

Good early effort there! If you want some C&C - try to get focus dead on the eye (it is on the hair on the forehead here). Hand held 1/50 is the limit for this lens - if you can up the ISO slightly and try and go for a faster shutter speed.

Feel free to ignore comments if C&C not welcome!
