Good early effort there! If you want some C&C - try to get focus dead on the eye (it is on the hair on the forehead here). Hand held 1/50 is the limit for this lens - if you can up the ISO slightly and try and go for a faster shutter speed.

Feel free to ignore comments if C&C not welcome!

Phil

Phil, thanks for the C&C - and the encouragement. Sorry it took so long to acknowledge. Just figured out the "subscription" feature here to make it back to this thread.

Agree with your comments. I went back and checked the ISO - it was only 200 so plenty of room for a faster shutter. The focus was on the fly in the kitchen - everyone moving about, but also a good tip.

Always happy for C&C. Here to learn!

Haha yeah, definitely true. I played with the 1.4 today, and was blown away by the IQ, and especially the bokeh. And for 325, it's not really that bad...versus the 1.2L for 1400.

Not in my opinion. Usually, you can tell when a picture is oversharpened, it looks kind of jagged. Your picture is sharpened in my opinion within parametres.

Well when i got into photography everyone was like get yourself the nifty fifty but, after some research the 50 1.4 seemed much better. In terms of build quality and fast focusing abliites of the USM. However, the price was a bit steep for the blooming photographer. So after purchacing the sigma 17-70 for my first lens and playing around with that, i had some extra money for the 50 1.4.
Went over to penn camera in fairfax and the sales person was happy to take my money. Well my first picture of this lens is not a duck, not a subject very spectacular however, it shows the very thin DOF this lens has. Its the message clips above my mailbox at my apartment. ;) haha

My copy has an unusual CA issue - normal CA (lateral - purple) can be cleaned up in post, mine has longitudinal (green glow/halo) CA which cannot be cleaned up in post. Also has softness and focus issues. It's a lens with ALOT of potential, and others here have gotten very good copies, I just wasn't as lucky.

I love the 50mm's contrast. I have to be careful with shooting highlights @ f/1.4 I get some crazy purple fringing...Also at times the bokeh can look like an oil painting as shown in my last picture. It can be cool sometimes...

Thanks.
No, the miniature museum had scenes based on historical events as well as some fairy tales and bed time stories . Some of the WW2 scenes reminded me of "Saving Private Ryan" so I shot and processed them with that in mind.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I viewed these. That second shot reminded me of the Vin Diesel sniper set, fantastic!

My sister-in-law with her 6 week old premature daughter, who was not supposed to be born until September 8. Born at 2lbs. 8 oz., Sadie has had a battle, but she is tough and got to come home last week.

She now weighs 4 lbs. 6 oz., and has a monitor attached to her 24/7 for now.

She is one tough girl!

On a POTN Pacific Northwest meet-up last Saturday we were exploring waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge, and I had my 16-35 on my 5D all the way until the end, when I saw this berry branch sticking out over a flowing stream. I switched to the 50 and got this at f/1.8:

I just got this lens yesterday and I'm loving it so far. The lens was getting delivered to my fraternity house and we were playing catch outside. I see the UPS guy, put down my glove and start walking over to him. He sees somebody playing catch and from 10+ feet away just hurls the lens at him and walks away. Luckily he caught it, but that could have been very unfortunate.

Anyway, here's a fav from yesterday.
