Man, I checked that review out, along with the review for the Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM. The Sigma is really starting to interest me, despite its higher price. I love the 30mm Sig f/1.4, and if the 50mm has the same high build-quality, I think I'll save up for it!

Here are pictures - ones without the purple....
Fringing is pretty much a fact of life when you are using wide apertures with strong contrasting highlight edges. I can't run down the optical technical explanation, but it's not because of a "cheap lens" -- the 85L shows noticeable fringing as well, and it ain't cheap!
You can do some things in post processing to bring that fringing down. Lightroom is my main PP app and in LR I use the color-specific Saturation tool and it's pretty effective. In Photoshop you can use similar color-specific desaturating, and as long as you ensure not to ruin the overall color of the image they both work nicely.

I took some engagement shots of my daughter. Was just playing around & tried this. Thought it came out pretty cool. I did get some c/c from a family "know it all" & he thought their faces should have been more in focus. I tried explaing to him this was the effect I was after & one of the reasons we buy fast lens..................Just couldn't get it thru his head..........am I wrong here??

You are correct, you've achieved a good effect, I think he/she is also correct, to me the bokeh on the faces is a little distracting.
You can also try shooting from the back of the man, and girl's hand on the man's right shoulder. Just experiment on angles and framing. Maybe rule of thirds will help with the framing.
It doesn't matter what other people say as long as you think you did the right thing, and the couple are happy with the pics, its ok.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

How much IQ quality difference is there between this and the new Sigma 1.4?
According to dpreview.com (http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma_50_1p4_c16/), whom I trust to do a good review, the lens has better bokeh and gives better results than the Canon 50mm f/1.4. Of course, it costs more and is heavier, so fitting it in between the f/1.4 and the f/1.2L seems about right.
If my experience with the 30mm f/1.4 EX Sigma is similar on the 50mm, then I would second that. The build quality of my 30mm is fantastic, and the image quality is also. Of course, the 30mm is a DC lens, meaning it's like the Canon EF-S lenses, and the 50mm is a DG lens, which means it isn't, but that should only make the Sig 50mm even better, as it can be used with full-frame cameras.
I'm going to buy one in the next six months, and will post some pictures and my impressions of it when I do.

And also typical to substitute "zza" at the end for any names that contain an "rr" sound... often being shortened to just a single "z" sound when we get lazy.
Darren = Dazza = Daz
Sharon = Shazza = Shaz
Barry = Bazza = Baz
Gary = Gazza = Gaz
Warren = Wozza = Woz
and so on...

I am so puzzled, the reviews I've read on this lens are so mixed. SLR Gear makes it look pretty bad, there are plenty of comments that it's not any good wide open and then I see photos here which look very good.
I'd be interested in using it on my FF 5D and probably mostly interested in shooting it wide open at f1.4. Is this a good combination. Normally I avoid the 50-mm focal length, the 50 1.2 really hasn't come across also as being an iffy investment and although not as heavy as the 85L it's still chunky.
Macroshot I'm really loving what you are posting, are you shooting these with your 40D?
One of the uses that interests me is to use it with extension tubes for shooting flowers really close up. It's important that it's small and not blocking light and I've plenty of longer lenses to do this with but trying to approach things I can do at the wider end with my G9 but instead with my 5D!
Please keep the photos coming!

I think any prime coupled with the 5D will perform very well. Not to mention the 5D provides slightly more shallow depth of field. I think the 50mm is sharp enough but when I shoot mine in high contrast environments, I can definitely point out the flaws when pixel peeping.

Check out the DPreview review of this lens. They certainly think its commendable...
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_50_1p4_c16/
If you mess with the MTF chart, you'll see that the lens is sharp starting at 2.0 on up (to 8) but is way, way better on the 5D.
If you want critical sharpness on this lens, shooting at an aperture of 2.8 is where you need to shoot (on a crop body).

Jannie - I read all the reviews after seeing the images posted as well. I see nothing on mine that indicates a problem at f/1.4. The first couple of days were nothing but wide open!! And more significantly, I don't notice a major difference when stopped down either (like my 135 f/2 for example).
I have a 5D (don't own the 40D though) and find this lens is very, very nice for the money, especially paired with the 5D.
I was curious as to how well it did macro using the extension tubes and was pleasantly surprised. I sold my 100 f/2.8 macro because I wasn't happy with my results. I found the 50 f1/.4 to be very compatible with the tubes. Hope this info helps.

Corners will be soft but center sharpness is great wide open. Frankly, when I'm shooting at f/1.4 I don't care one iota about corner sharpness, so it's a perfect lens on my 5D
