Following the Nikkor 17-55 great popularity, and great lens, what are the chances of Canon launching a QUALITY version of it ever ?

That'll be tough to slot in between the 16-35 and 24-70...too much overlap I would think. However, they could slap IS on it to justify it's existance, but I imagine that would ruin sales for the other two as well.

Theorethically though, they could discontinue the 16-35 f/2.8 for a new 17-55 f/2.8 (like they've done with the now discontinued 17-35 f/2.8 )

24-70 2.8 IS?
I guess you'd really need IS @ 70, and not that much on 24, although downstopping by 3 stops hadheld would be nice :D

Odds are fairly high in favor of a 17-55 f/2.8 - in EF-S mount. Good news for a lot of shooters if true!

I'll definately be watching this space. Sounds good (if it's true that is!).

I do hope it's an EF (not EF-S) !

However, there's a WEB snapshot (in Pbase) 'supposedly' taken from Canon Spain, which kinda confirms an EOS 30D, an EF-S 17-55, and an EF 85 !

Whether it's a Hoax/Teaser - only time can tell ... :)

Well, it looks like it has a confirmation from an official Canon site - 'Canon Spain' has this:

http://213.4.104.210/showtime/live/index.html
Notas de Prensa -> Camaras Fotograficas Digitales

basically it shows an exact view of the snapshot above.

It maybe a WEB master error, but nevertheless it's there ...

I don't trust information coming from a site that is only accessed via tha IP address. Give me an offical Canon registered url and I will believe ;)

Besides the link don't work.

Trust me on this one.

Just 2 days ago, if you would have gone to www.canon.es (http://www.canon.es) site, you would have seen a 'flash' link (by the name: "+70 Nuevos Lanzamientos" -whatever that is...]. Clicking on this would have gotten you to IP:

http://213.4.104.210/showtime/index.html (http://213.4.104.210/showtime/index.html)

but now it is dead....

Or, that their WEB master erronomuously snuck in some info too early, realized his/her mistake, and de-activated it [until tomorrow...]

There is one... only, it's not a Canon lens but a Tammy:

http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/1750_diII_a016.asp

OK, it's not 55mm but 50, it's not L and it doesn't have USM... but it will be lots cheaper than L. Street price around $700 or €600?

I seriously think about buying one when it's available... replaces my 17-35 f/2.8-4 nicely.

I think canon is going to seperate the EFS mount with all the new EFS "high quality S-UD lenses"

so far they have super wide to wide normal lenses. So its only fair to say that there should be a telephoto zoom lens in EFS mount that has the same S-UD glass as the L series.

The 17-55 is an EF-S for 20Ds and 30Ds. Price I think??? is about $1100. $700 would be better.
Available maybe in April. The full frame guys will use the 16-35 and the Cropped sensors will utilitze this new lens.

The 85mm is the Mark II 1.2L coming in April for about $2100.
