hey guys well firstly this is my first time on a forum, so please be kind to me!

my question is i have recently purchased a 350d and had looked at purchasing a 28-05 3.5-45 usm lense but have since been advised that this wont be much different to the 18-55 standard lense that the camera came with on the canon 350d? however the reviews of the lense its self sounds perfect? can anyone shed any light on this for me please? or recommend a similar more suitable lense.
i wont it to do simple zoom work and particularly for photographing natural pictures and portrate pictures of children with out being "in on the action".

thank you so much to anyone who can help

:)

first .. welcome to the forums ..

my first purchase lens was the nifty fifty - 50mm F/1.8 and the price isn't so bad where it can break the bank ( 80 bucks ) .. from what i have gathered on this forum is that .. its not what you " think " you want .. its more about expriementing with condition and types of shots will determind what will best suits you and your range of photos .. once you know what you shoot the most and the condition you mostly shoot your photos at .. that will let you know what you'll need ... range and speed ...
hope this makes sense and good luck with your new camera

This is a consumer lens which isn't known for its sharpness. Here's a review that might be helpful.

FYI-This lens got a rating of 5 out of 10 on the FM site.

I guess you're talking about the 28-105?

I had the kits lens as my sole lens for six months i know it well. I gets a bad rap, it's a cheap inexspensive lens to cut your teeth on. It's not great optically, but not as bad as some make out. You don't need a zoom lens for taking natural photos, that's just something you will learn. Given what you've asked though, i'd say go for the 28-105 it is the better of the two

That is the wrong lens. The OP is looking at the f/3.5-4.5 version which gets much better reviews.

Not sure who you are referring to. You might want to use the quote option next time. But I will anwer anyway. I have had my camera for two months now. This forum has allowed me to learn so much more than just playing with the camera on my own. You will love it. BUT, be prepared to spend some money. For some reason this sight just sucks it out of us.:D

Don't go rushing out and buying a load of lenses, getting yourself in to debt. Photography is like any other art form, there as many styles and tastes, learn your style and taste and get the tools that compliment them.

My first purchase lens-wise was the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 which is still my most used lens. Great all-purpose, though you might consider the Sigma 24-70 if you need more wide angle than tele. Price range about $400 depending on where you live.

make sure you get all the info as much as you can and decide from there .. as in wide, long range .. fast ? what kind of shots and so on and so forth .. i kinda lurked for a while and read what everyone has to say and see their results and work and that should narrow everything down for ya ! .. good luck and good shooting ! :)
