Hello board!

Enjoy! http://homepage.mac.com/pkwagner/index.html

I've been watching the various Canon message boards for about 3 months, gearing up for a major camera upgrade. Anyway, my 10D and 100-400 L IS USM arrived July 3rd!

My Background: I'm a software engineer at Apple (not iPhoto; I work for iTunes and wrote much of the user interface for the now-famous iTunes Music Store). I bought a point-and-shoot 2 megapixel camera 3 years ago and upgraded to the Minolta Dimage 7i last year. Since my parents are "birders" I use photography as a great way to spend the grueling day-long outings at the local Silicon Valley swamps, grasslands, marshes, etc. My other main camera use is to take pictures of my ever-growing collection of carnivorous plants.

I found that the Minolta was great for macro work with screw-on macro adaptors, but the fixed lens was a major limitation for birds. The other great feature of the Minolta was the built-in time-lapse photography capability; that was great for 2-hour shoots of drosera (sundew plants) attacking insects.

I just wanted to share the results of my second weekend with the new toy. By then the 28-135 IS USM joined the party. I must admit that this camera setup is spectacular. For my friends who just count pixels and zoom factor, it's hard to even describe just how much better VALUE the $3000 Canon setup is over the $800 Minolta. The focus speed, focus accuracy, and image stabilizer of the 100-400 "L" is AMAZING.

Last weekend I finally got a chance to get out and take some real pictures. $3000 buys an amazing setup! For me, the 1.6x crop factor is a MAJOR benefit. In fact, a tripod, the 1.4x "II" tele-converter, and a roll of masking tape (for the "II" leads) are on my short list of expensive extras.

Comments and help are always welcome!

Now a software guy for Apple should at least have working links! I would too like to see the results of your camera purchase as I am still sitting on the fence about a 10D.

Oh most embarrassing! I have a "free" .mac employee account; it expired at midnight and the whole thing is gone. Oh well, I guess I got what I paid for. Fortunately, I've been able to activate another one. I'm running out the door right now but will be back in business this afternoon.

Sorry for the broken links.

I have a pair of D60 and don't see the need for the upgrade till a new 1D comes out. but if they are as good as the D60 you won't be dissapointed.

Welcome to the 10D club PWagner! I have a D60 and a 10D and love them both. Prefer the 10D though. I also have the 100-400L and am very pleased with it too. Sure looking forward to seeing those pictures sometime soon.

RFMSports, your boat racing pictures where the clincher for me in my lens decision. :-)

pwagner,

WOOOHOOO!! Welcome to the 10D world, you will love it!! Funny, seeing RFMSports's photos is what made me decide as well. I wanted the lens before I even wanted the camera. I was so impressed, he should work for Canon.

NiL,

BTW: I had one of the jetsprint boat pictures printed out at about 35"x25" at 720dpi on a Mimaki color inkjet plotter. The photo was processed (rasterized) using Wasatch softRIP software and the results were fantastic! I was very impressed how ell the photo turned out. The guy that owns the printer says it was by far the best photograph he'd seen printed on the machine.

In case this hasn't yet come to your attention, Canon's electronic remote shutter release (they call it a timer remote control TC-80N3) allows you to do time lapse photography.

Like many of you I have bought a 10D and 28-135 USM IS lens.
For a man that is almost broke, what additional lens I should have for scene photography. I dont have to go for a Canon, generic will do.
