While waiting for some birds I shot this test shot to test the focus on my lens, when I saw it on my screen I fell in love with it.

I hope you like it to.

Greetings,
Frank

Frank,

The yellows are certianly stunning, but there is not enough dtail on the bird to see what species it is. Which lens did you use?

I think it is a bee...while he was waiting for birds. :-)

Correct it was/is a bee.

The lens is a Canon 75-300 III f4-5.6.

I have the same lens. I wanted the 100-400L but the 75-300 was what I could afford. I'll probably sell this lens after I buy an L replacement, probably sometime next year. I've got quite a few bird pics on my site, check 'em out.

I do find that this lens is only really useful handheld if the light is good, but the IS version is almost triple the price here. For moving subjects like birds in flight the IS really doesn't help anyway.

Good luck with the bird pics.

Why do you say that? The 100-400L has two IS modes. The 2nd mode allows panning and it's just what you need for flight shots. :) Great for sports shots, too, such as racing.

Hi,

Nice photo's, I love Rally's :D.

I just bought a used Sigma 70-210mm 2.8 APO lens.
I will mate it with a Sigma 1.4 extender, I would have loved the 2x extender but it appears that's not so good.

The idea was to use the 750-300III for a year but I love the camera that much I can't wait, the second hand market is VERY intressting.

Greetings,
Frank

I like IS, but the IS on my 28-135 only has the one mode like on the 75-300 IS. On the 70-200L IS and 100-400L IS the IS has 2 modes, but my understanding is that it only allows left-right panning on the 2nd mode, this may not necessarily work well with birds in flight.

My experience so far with birds in flight and Race cars is that the shutter speed needs to be pretty high, so IS is not really needed.

It seems to me that IS is the most useful when taking handheld shots of stationary subjects in less than ideal light. This still makes it worth having the option of IS on a lens.

I guess you could be correct about using high shutter speed with the birds but my experience has been that high shutter speed for racing = static looking racing cars and motorcycles as if they were just parked there in the middle of the race track. The sense of motion is only appreciated when the background and the wheels are motion blurred. IMHO nothing ruins an otherwise cool racing shot more than seeing wheels on racing cars or bikes where you can make out the brand of the tires! :D
