Hi Jim,
Not real sure about that first image. Your sky is blown out, and the ground area is too dark. Not sure if you're going for the main subject being the tree/bush in the center area or if maybe I'm missing something in the clouds?
As for the second image. You've got some good sky there, but the ground area really doesn't hold much to keep my attention.
What you may want to do next time you head out with your camera, try to find something as your main subject, that will also tell something of a story, and compose things that will help your main subject to tell that story. :D

Well... sadly, your sky is still very "blown out" or overexposed. About the only way you may be able to fix it, is if you have Photoshop, use the magic wand and mask over the sky area, then make some adjustments to the brightness/contrast.
Here's an example where I was able to isolate a blown out sky and make some adjustments to where it looked a little better.

I agree with VanceW , here is an example of forground / interest / background.

If you manage to combine your photos like this, you are doing OK.
And a little tip...Instead of posting (in the begining) keep looking and reading posts from others, you will get good experience by doing this.;)

the more photos you take the more you'll realize how crucial the sky can be. I have to agree with Vance... but, there's always tomorrow. happy shooting, keep posting........ Sari.

dimitri I agree with you partly... first, your a freakin' genius. showing a total newbie your stuff is just going to intimidate... sometimes it's hard for folks new to all this to learn to incorporate techniques if they aren't doing it hands on so to speak. they show you a pic, you tell them how to improve the lighting, composition etc... they go back reshoot it, get it right and there next photo is going to have all the mistakes already corrected so we can move on to the other ones. ;) ;) that's kind of the point, don't ya think?

Well Sari, you might be right, perhaps i didn`t make myself as clear as i should but my 1st concern was only about the composition, and thats why i gave him the link,to take a look how a picture looks much better when its well composed.
At this stage i wouldn`t worry much about other techniques and how to improve lighting.
Lets take one thing at a time.

When I started with these kind of shots, I learned to take the same scene at different exposure settings. I am not a fan of the harsh silhouette, I prefer to have at least either the sky or land with plenty of details in. Keep trying.

Well Sari, isn`t that the beauty of freedom of speach?;)
I`m always of the opinion that no matter how much i know about something,i still like to hear someone elses ideas, you never know,i might not agree but i might also get a small something out of it,which might be of use.
As i say , i may not agree with your opinion but i do respect it.
At the end of the day,i`ve seen myself apologising for having the wrong opinion about something.;)
And as i have seen in another forum (someones logo)....
If you all agree with everything i say , either you are not listening or i`m talking cr**.
