I was wondering if you could help me with some unusual pictures I have with a giant black spot on the sun, it looks like everyone with digital and webcams are seeing them. Please could you give me a technical explanation, the more technical the better.

Here is the anomaly

NANCY

I haven't got a clue.

I have never had this on my G2 -- but I have never shot into a daylight sun. I have shot often into an evening sun but have never had these sopts.

At first I thought that some of the hardware receptors were burned out, but the prblem follows the sun around the frame. That suggests some kind of hardware/software clipping of the hi-end whites, and that might be consistent with a circle.

What camera are we looking at here. You might post the EXIF data. If no one else has had the problem, I'd get right on to Canon.

Here's a shot I have shooting into a sunset and there's no black spot. I've not seen this at all on my G2 so I have little to offer in the way of explanation or advice.

This is pure theeory on my part,. nothing at all to back it up..

But it looks as if the pixels have simply shut off.

Perhaps they are being over saturated with light and thus switch off completely? Perhaps it is to protect the pixels from burning out alltogether?

Just theory.

I dont know, but can you control the exposure, and if you can does it stay when you change it.

Hi,

This phenomenom is well known to a lot of film photographers who have used emulsions with limited latitude. It is simply a reversal effect of the extreme brightness of the sun being solarized. I have had the experience of having had this happen to me several times over the years.
