What would be best for my S2, a linear or circular polarizer and what is the difference?

I believe linear is used for video cameras, and when used on an autofocus camera sort of acts as two polarizers from what I've read and will underexposure your picture.

So, I think your best bet is to go with the Circular. Both give the same filter effects but circular is used with our autofocus cameras and linear is for video cameras and old manual focus cameras.

You can read about it and other polarizers and filters here. Its really a great site. http://www.geocities.com/cokinfiltersystem/polarizer.htm

Linear polarisers are used with old manual focus cameras and not a lot else. A linear polariser will randomly screw up focus on an autofocus camera.

You want a circular polariser for your S2 IS, with whatever attachment you need to use a screw-in filter. I'd go for a decent brand, and multicoated - as you only need a small filter, it shouldn't be too expensive.
