I have an Olympus FL-40 external flash. I tried to use it on the D30 in manual mode. It did not work. The D30 report the error code for the pop up flash and would not play nicely. I also tried a very old flash I use on my AE-1. It did the same thing.

I would much rather spend the large amount of money wanted for a Canon 550 on a lens or something else. It would be great if you could suggest a good alternative to the 550 Flash. Also, do you think the ETLL is worth the price?

Thanks...

Hi, I have the 420EX which is significantly cheaper than the 550. It doesn't have all of 550's functions but otherwise a perfect ext. flash for me.

Hi,

I have the 550EX+420EX+ST-E2 for multi-flash setup.
This worked very well. A bonus is that the ST-E2 also assists the D30 for faster AF.

I also have just ordered the Sunpak 544 for on-camera flash. I've heard that the Sunpak 544 is highly praised for its consitency on the D30, plus it's affordable ($130).

Some others have also recommended:
Sunpak 383 Super (Auto Thyristor) - $80.
Sigma EF500 Super (very similar to the 550EX) - $150.

sigma EF500 does NOT work (in anything but manual mode) with the d-30...

and yes...ETTL is very worth it : ) i love my 550 EX and ST-E2 : )
