View Full Version : Tough Decision

I could do with some advice please.
I bought a D30 shortly after they came out. I have been very pleased with it and I like the results. I use it for general photography 'just for fun' - anything and everything, but with a bit more emphasis on sports/action.
I didn't get a D60. The sample pics on 'DP review' etc. looked a little better but not that much. With few other changes to the camera, I decided there wasn't enough justification to spend the money.
Buying the 10D is harder decision. I think the results look a little better still and there other improvements.
So has anyone used both cameras? Is a 10D enough of an upgrade to make it worth the money? Or do I stick with the D30?
Thanks
Mark

Mark,
I did have a D30 and upgraded. Is that enough of an answer? :)
Actually, I didn't have real good reasons for upgrading, I figured that after two years with the D30, it was time for a new toy and I couldn't afford a 1Ds.
Having got the camera:
- more pixels is nice
- the magnesium chassis is nice
- you can see the picture in the LCD (although it's not a very good indicator of exposure accuracy)
- it takes the Big Ed battery grip
- much less noise at higher ISO
- focus is quicker than the D30 and much less hunting
There are some 10D with focus problems, but I think the noise on the 'net is out of proportion to the number of cameras with an issue. Actually, I did have a problem which Canon fixed. I was in a local dealer today. He said he hadn't heard anything from customers and he can't get 10D's fast enough.
- I don't shoot sports/action, but the AI servo on the 10D is much improved
There's prolly other stuff, but somebody else can throw in their 2 cents.

I have never used a D30, But it was the FIRST DSLR I lusted for,.. :D and I came close to buying both it and the D60 many many times.
When the 10D came out woth its lower price,. that settled it!
But I think the question is one that you need to ask yourself.
Are you dissatisfied with the D30 in any way?
If not than why Bother with the upgrade.
On the other hand, if the 10D offers something that you specifiacally want that the D30 does not offer,. than go for it!
The D30 is selling used now for well under a thousand in many cases. You could keep yours for a second body too.

I went in to my local camera shop to ask about the D60 because I'd just recieved a large redundancy cheque that was burning a hole in my pocket. I'd been waiting for a 6MP Canon EOS camera for a couple of years. When they told me the D60 had been superseded by the 10D for £500 less than a D60, I went for it without a second thought. After a few false starts (the Canon software is c**p, you will need capture one), I'm very pleased with the results. I'd only change it for a 1DS (in my dreams).
I'm taking photos that people are asking for copies of! Unheard of when I was using film.
