I hate this thread!
The 85 f1.8 is my least use lens and now I just got the 135 f2 so I'm thinking of selling the 85 to recoup some money. But this thread makes it tough to.
Maybe I should sell the 135 haha :)

The easiest way to make borders like that is in cs3 (or i guess elements) right click on the bar at the top of the image you're editing (image can't be maximised) and choose canvas size, then extend the canvas by maybe 2 or 4 pixels and set it to white, click ok, then do the same thing and extend it by 50 pixels and set it to black.
Hope that helps.

Great description. I never rember how i set up the actions. Do this while recording the actions and then it is just one click for every picture.

I am new here and I am also new to photography. I have taken some really good pictures, but they "never" seem to have the crisp clearity that most people are getting from this lens. I use the Canon 20D and shot this picture 1/60 sec ISO 400 and it looks ok, but not great. Any advise?

Use a tripod and add some exposure compensation.
Do you have a flash besides the one in the camera?

Possible camera shake due to a low shutter speed. When shooting indoors, use a flash or increase your ISO to 800 or 1600.I use the Canon 20D and shot this picture 1/60 sec ISO 400 and it looks ok, but not great. Any advise?

The 1/60 of a second would be why you're not getting completely tack sharp images. Always at least try to follow the 1/focal length rule. In your case follow a 1/(focal length *1.6) as you're using a 1.6 crop body to be extra safe.
What you're seeing is a very slight amount of camera shake that is distorting your sharpness ever so slightly. Hope this helped.

Lighting, lighting, lighting.
When you see an image here with "pop" or "punch" or whatever the kids are calling it these days, it is usually because of strong or interesting lighting. If you look at your child's face, it seems barely lit. Compare this to the sharp, punchy photos from the previous page and you'll see how the lighting in the foreground contrasting with the dark or light or shadow or color in the background give it a different sort of look.
That, and of course, it would bring up your shutter speed so it isn't so shaky.

I'm not really seeing any camera shake, but it looks like the focus is just slightly off. The hair on the top of her head looks pretty sharp instead of her eyes. There isn't a lot of room for error if you're shooting wide open. She could have leaned forward that much after you focused...

Agree about lighting. Also, something that works for me is selecting a single focus point and putting right on the subjects eye.

This is no doubt the best lens in my kit. But I believe it would be much better on FF body. On 1.6x it gets a bit too long. Thats the only reason I dont see it getting used much. But definitely I just love the pics it produces.
My guess is 50mm 1.4 should be better on XTi.

What the previos guy said.
Plus that this shot is backfocused, look at the hair and you see that it's sharpest towards the neck. This could be user or equipment error, most common that you locked the focus and she moved before you took the picture.

Own the 85mm and shoot indoor basketball (40D)...to die for!
Boys love that I get tight shots, with no flash! Only care about one
end of court, so the 85mm is just right! Enjoy!

Just one question. Have you ever been caught clicking strangers? Even been in such a situation?
Is it okay to shoot people on streets without their permission?

What the previos guy said.
Plus that this shot is backfocused, look at the hair and you see that it's sharpest towards the neck. This could be user or equipment error, most common that you locked the focus and she moved before you took the picture.
Thats and 99% of these pictures are PP...I wish for these lens picture threads, no PP was allowed....as you can totally change the picture with PP and then you are only demonstrating you PP skills IMO...
bhardwaj.deepak
8th of January 2009 (Thu), 16:20
I disagree. PP is an integral part of photography.
RAW-Shooter
8th of January 2009 (Thu), 17:45
Just converting from RAW to JPG is a form of PP. Most RAW processors have some auto level values set also.
I do agree however, that pictures in the lens thread should be as much out of the camera as possible and a 100% crop should also be posted.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Deepak. As for your question, in countries such as the UK, Australia and the United States, it is perfectly legal to take shots of anyone while I'm standing in a public place. I have been caught before, but they can't do anything if they don't like it. There are, however, unspoken moral standards many street shooters adhere to. If the subject shows obvious irritation, it is often best to put the camera down.
