The gulls were shot at between f3.2 and f3.5, and the slower moving birds on the water at between f4 and f5. I really enjoy this lens, but I really need to try shooting people with it now! May try to gate crash a few weddings in a suite etc lol

Cool swan shot. The water looks almost like a 3D rendering.

Nice detail but a hair oversharpened. (And I thought my boy had ridiculous eyelashes-- those are curling over on themselves!)

Oh yea and with your previous shot up above, it is a really nice portrait but you need to learn the "Dad Bath" technique and use it before you shoot. It involves a warm, wet cloth and a quick wipedown of the face :D

Oh, I realized after seeing a few more kids in your posts that they probably aren't all yours :D I dunno about not offering a warm cloth for a wipedown -- I think the mom's might appreciate the results in the photos. I'm sure there is a tactful way to do it without implying that their kid is dirty. I wasn't sure if that was dry skin or maybe dried milk spray..

nice shot, but i think a shutter drag would have given the shot the feeling of "moving fast"

It really is wicked sharp at f/2. Silly sharp. The bokeh is creamy (I say that tongue-in-cheek) and it isn't jittery or edgy.

Drawbacks: crappy hood, the build is a step down, I think it is 1/4 stop darker than rated

You can't really hate on the lens for much more than that.

I don't need any sharper than it is at f/2. Most portraits benefit from negative clarity with this lens anyway. It is nice to have the detail if you want it, but there really isn't even a need to go to f/2.8 with this.

It's sharp - but something about it's IQ otherwise, I can't explain. I use it wide open quite often and am more than happy with the results.

Thanks adam, it was a quick test shot before I did some images of a friend's baby. It was a 580 and a softlighter set-up as shoot-through. I might have had a 5 x 8 lastolite white reflector on the left but I don't remember and I don't see the catch in her eyes so I'm not sure.

This lens is my favourite for its sharpness, but its not too useful on a crop body.
I am actually thinking if I should less it off for something shorter focal length. say 50mm 1.4.

How good an idea is that?

The relatively long MFD of this lens is the only flaw that I'm concerned about. To stand back about 3 feet to take a photo. Always loved to photograph people up close. Though on the other hand, it would make for a nice (though rather unorthodox) candid street lens.

Yes! It's nice to have the working distance - easier to get "candid" shots! I've only just got this lens, and am really enjoying it.

I routinely use a 12mm extension tube now with this lens and that certainly helps when doing close-up portraits.

The 85mm is THE street lens for me. If I didn't get into shooting street recently, I would probably would have sold it. The lens is small, sharp, fast and has quick AF. Perfect for street IMO.

95% of my street shots here were taken by the 85mm:

Impressions, Its great. I shot all day @ f/2 on my 400D at ISO 1600. Under exposed them all by half a stop to keep shutterspeed up. All i'm wanting now is a good upgrade than can handle the iso because All the photos i took I had to run them through my noise ninja+ sharpen action because of the 400D's crap noise @ 1600. 50D for $1100 US.. sounds good, or 5D for $1200.. its hard. Keep up the great pics guys.

I haven't used my copy much.. bought it just a few months ago but it's a bit long inside my apartment and I haven't felt like going outside in the cold to use it much.

I will give it until the summer and if I find I do not use it enough then I might sell it and get a 50mm f/1.4 instead. I really WANT to LIKE this lens though! Its very sharp and the autofocus works great!

Seeings you have the 18-55 IS covering your wide end, 85mm would be a nice addition to your collection. Although I'm sure you will forget about the 50 f/1.8 and take a few steps back and enjoy what wonders this lens has to offer.

tempting...:-)
I am thinking of upgrading my 50mm to the 1.4 - but perhaps I will nix that idea until I see what the 85mm has to offer...now, how to present this situation to my husband?:-)...

I am so new I still have that new photographer smell. I just received my 40D yesterday after many years of a pretty ok P&S. I am completely blown away by just how good I can get with absolutely no photography skills. I've been reading, reading and reading and thanks to this forum and this thread specifically I added the 85mm f/1.8 to my shopping cart.

My second shot taken with my new set up:

I was able to smuggle this baby into the Pac 10 Men's Basketball Tournament this past weekend. Here are a few of the better shots. We had pretty good seats, 7 rows behind the hoop and a bit off to the side. I wasn't able to get many great shots of the action from there, but I was basically right behind the cheerleaders, not a bad view =)

Ok, here's how to do the LAB color boost trick...

Obviously you have to use Photoshop.
Select the IMAGE menu option and click on MODE
Change the mode from RGB to LAB
On the IMAGE menu option select APPLY IMAGE
A pop-up dialog window will display. By default the Blending is set to Multiply, change that to SOFT LIGHT.
Make sure the Layer drop down list (DDL) is set to Background (or whatever layer your applying this to)
Now in the CHANNEL DDL cycle through the three options (LAB, A or B) and decide which you like best.
To decrease the color boost effect simply dial back the Opacity. I typically set it somewhere between 25% - 35%.
Once your happy with the color boost, switch the MODE back to RGB and that's it.http://www.planetnikon.com/forums/uploads/post-585-1194819840.jpg
