As much as I want to sell my 85mm and put the money towards either a 40D or a netbook, looking at these wonderful images I know I'll seriously regret if I were to sell it and end up in a situation where I needed it. I'm still relatively new to photography and need to FORCE myself to use the prime lens! (I had a nifty before but sold it mostly because of how poor the AF was). This lens has great AF in low light, fast and accurate so I have no reason to sell it other than I need to get out and use it more!

Does anyone here find it nice to use this with a second camera- one with a zoom for convinience?

yes, noise intentional w/ PP. this was the look i desired for these two photos

I like those 2 pics (noise included) but it could have a bit more blacks and contrast.

the added noise reduced the contrast. again, this is the look i was going for because it represented what the party felt like to me. The orignal files w/ more contrast just didn't 'look' the same

My experience with this lens is that it must be used with shutter speeds way above the 1/(85*1.6) rule to get sharp results. Anything below 1/100 will, half of the time, result in shaking blur.

I can'ts peak for his copy, but my Tammy was pretty good. The 85 is sharper, faster focussing and quiter as well. But the Tammy was an excellent lens. There are times when I still wish I had it.

Yes indeed, it is a 100% crop. Regarding the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, my copy is excellent. Tack sharp starting at 3.2 at all lengths. The AF is somewhat noisy (it is not USM) but it is quite fast. Example and 100% crop, shot with the 50d, ISO160 f4, 1/800. It is always ready in one of my bodies.

Umm... you guys are so evil  All these beautiful pictures... *sigh* So I went out and bought the lens. Man... I've only had about 5 minutes of playtime with it (darn work! always interrupting), but I'm already in love.

Since my 40D is away with Err99 issues, I put it on the 400D and took a few shots of my neighbours cat, who came over for a visit. He was giving me suspicious looks, but finally decided to just ignore the camera.

The EF-85 is sharpest at f5.6-f8, both center and corners. That said, f2.5 is perfectly sharp, as my previous example with the 50d shows. However, on the 5d MK2, corners will suffer a little.

Sorry. In regards to taking portraits, how close do you think you can get to your subjest to keep the face in focus at 1.8 or 2.

paparios

Sorry. In regards to taking portraits, how close do you think you can get to your subjest to keep the face in focus at 1.8 or 2.

The EF85 lens has a long focus minimum distance of 0.85m (that is your subject has to be farther away than 0.85 meters). Now the main problem of using an aperture of f1.8 is the very thin DOF resulting. For instance, in the 5d MK2, with the subject a 1 meter, the DOF is of only 1 cm, that is you will get a sharp eye but a blurry nose!. There is a very good online DOF calculator (http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html), where you can check these numbers.

Thanks for info Mike & Miguel!

And again, nice to see another 100% crop - it's an amazing lens!

The 85 is no doubt a better lens, but if the Tammy is in anyway close in IQ, that would be amazing too.

I'm really torn now! Almost settled on the Tamron for my basic portrait zoom lens, but the 85 is calling! Just concerned that it was a little too close in focal length to my 100 macro which I usually use for tight portraits - wonderful lens for that.

In all honesty as much as I love the 85 I think based on your current gear the Tammy would be the better choice for now. The 100 Macro will do a similar job to the 85 so having a nice standard zoom to compliment that lens would be ideal. 28mm on a crop camera though is not great for a wide angle though. Keep your 18-55 for those times when you need wider or consider something like the Sigma 17-70 instead of the Tammy.

Thanks for the info. Really don't want to hijack this thread, but just want to say, that I rarely go really wide hence the need for a mid-range zoom or the 85 to save me using the kit lens. But yes, I think the Tammy would be better for now and maybe get an 85 later for the faster prime.

...and no, I won't get rid of my kit lens. My copy isn't too shabby so, as you said, comes in handy for the wider shots!

OK, back to the 85 samples!

OMG Miguel! Welp, now I'm confused again .. :o

I wanna buy the 100 cuz of it's macro and reach for portraits. Yeah, I do like being out at around 150 (160) for portraits. BUT! The only macro use it'll get, is the occasional rings shot in the flowers, or on the piano keyboard, or even the invitation, perhaps the shoes? Very little macro use, but I'd like it when I need it.

Now I'm lookin at this lens and boy oh boy .. you've helped kina clear a few things up. First and foremost .. I really have to go out and find another cat!
It's been 2 years, and that shot of your elder cat almost made me cry .. ;)

I have the EF 28-105 and I really love it, and now it's making more sense to have something inbetween. To be perfectly honest also, I cant see any difference in image quality in the 85 as opposed to the 100.

Both the 100 and the 85 accept 58mm filter sizes, so thats a plus .. and the 85 is a bit less expensive. If need be, I can always use extension tubes for my weddings.
I always did use them with my 6x7 Pentax camera's and the 135 macro .. It's not an inconvenience at all to install one.

Gosh darn-it .. Now I'm looking at the 85 .. owell, I'm taking my time reading and researching .. after-all, isn't that what it's all about?

EDIT: I swear, that 100% crop almost looks as if the bloddy lens foucused in-side the cats eyes .. wow!

The great advantage of the EF-85 is that you can use it at f1.8 (however, the DOF can be quite thin what makes AF a little bit tricky). At f2.5 the lens is already tack sharp. The following example, and 100% crop, was taken with the 50d at ISO200, f2.5, 1/500.

Man .. unreal!

And yeah, alotta the stuff that I do, I manually focus anyhow ..
hard to teach an old horse a new trick .. wait, howz that sayin go again? ;)

Once again Miguel, it really appears that the sharpest point of both those crops are in the eyes, lol! Freakin amazing!

I believe also that the 85 is smaller and lighter then the 100, which is another +
All of a sudden the 85 is lookin better and better ..

I recently knocked my camera off a table with the 85mm on it... luckily it landed on the grip and the end of the lens, with the UV filter taking most of the damage... from what I can tell it still focuses fine, but the lens cap doesn't really fit on any longer...so I guess lesson learned, and it could have been a lot worse.. but I'd be lying if I didn't let loose with a few choice words as it was happening.

Well, the 135L is very popular on FF cameras, so yes...it's a useful focal length. Face shots indoors are what it excels at, and outdoors it's perfect.

Those aren't the greatest subjects, (they just look like quick snapshots) but from what I can tell they look OK. If you are getting bad results at f/1.8 it's because it's an extremely narrow DOF to be shooting and takes some practice. It's very easy to miss-focus at a high aperture/long focal length, I'm still getting used to mine and find I'm using my 70-200 f/4 more outdoors anyways.

Thanks. I tested (although didn't post them) in various apertures, even at f/2.5, f/4 and 6-10 feet away with <1/160 shutter speeds and the pictures were still out of focus or blurry. I did about ~30-50 shots until I decided to message the seller and request a refund.

Do you use PS for your editing? If so, try one of these instead:

1. Go to Image > Canvas Size and add some canvas. Don't forget to select your fill color at the bottom.

2. Select your entire image (CTRL+A) and go to Edit > Stroke to add a line around the image at your desired thickness. Again, don't forget to select your color.

So as everyone on here is an experienced 85 user... I have a newbie question. I bought my 85 about the same time I got my 40D. I thought my 40D had a focusing problem because I wasn't getting super sharp images.

At f/2.8 compared to my 50mm 1.8 it is about equal in sharpness but compared to my 60mm 2.8 it gets blown away.

I have been unable to get the focus where I want it since I bought it. At first I was sure it was user error because f 1.8 can be difficult to get the focus where you want it. But after doing that comparison - I am worried.

I would appreciate some advice. I wrote canons technical support and they suggested that I ship it to them so they can take a look. I just don't want to do that if it is just me and not the lens.

If someone tells me how to post 100% crop pics I would be happy to do that so you can see what I am refering to.
