go for the 85mm - much more interesting images and does not extend when focusing unlike the 50mm. Some of mine pictures attached. All taken with 450d body.

85mm hands down. To me the 50mm 1.4 is a good lens but the 85mm 1.8 is an awesome lens.

Why choose one? Get them both, you won't be sorry. It's only money anyway right!? :)

I kinda wish I had bought the 50mm instead. IMO alot of the awsome images in this thread were taken with 5D or 1D which look amazing. The 85mm just seems kinda long on my crop cameras and minimal focusing distance isn't that great. I will give mine for of a chance though when I do more outdoor shooting.

Here is one that I shot yesterday morning. The US Customs and Border Patrol Honor Guard was practicing for a ceremony and I had my camera with me so I stopped and watched for a little while and grabbed some shots. For some reason though, the CA on this is pretty bad. I have never come across this issue before with this lens so I am not sure why it happened.

I think I am going to sell mine. Maybe if I was using full frame I would find myself using it alot more, but it's just too long on APC sensor and MFD is too long otherwise it would be fun for extreme closeups. It's too bad this lens is just not right for me, cause it's capable of very awsome pictures. :(

I think I will sell it and put the money aside for a 17-55 IS, which I used today for a wedding and it worked so awsome.

Just used my 85mm for a wedding event. It's really nice to focus only on the head and maybe a little of the shoulders. In a place where there are so many people, you can capture the emotion and look of a certain person without all the distraction. This lens is the only one that I have that can do that. :)

I have both and feel the same way. The 85mm is such a great lens but for what I take pictures of it really doesnt get used. I have the 17-55mm 2.8 IS and it hardly ever comes off the camera! Im looking for a UWA now though. Sorry to get off track!:D

Well I will be using it tomorrow to shoot a band. I will also bring the 17-55 and see if it's capable of the lighting conditions. If I don't get results then I may end up posting the85mm in the for sale section.

Quick question about this lens... I just got mine back from Canon... some people here told me it was user error, but I sent it in just for peace of mind. Sure enough it was front focusing as a thought. For up close shots/portraits does anyone use it wide open? I find the sharpest I can get is at 2.2... is that about right?

I don't shoot it wide open unless I absolutely have to (meaning not enough light). The DOF is just too thin (but it is sharp). I mostly shoot at f/2.5-f/3.2 like the one below.

How much do you guys find the minimum focus distance a hindrance? 2.8 feet kinda seems far, but then again maybe not.

it's only bothered me a couple times, but I've been able to crop and get the framing I was after.

Got it today, was expecting it Monday what a surprise. This is the first one, single speed light with a bit of skin smoothing. How did I do? This lens will take some practice.

thanks, just FYI, the only thing I did to the eyes was a high pass sharpen, then set the opacity to around 60%. So basically just a slight mid-tone contrast adjustment, no color adjustment.
