^^+1 too! KingoftheHill - That's amazing street photography and the 85/1.8 is sweet!

I definitely would like to try to get comfortable taking street photography - currently feeling very uncomfortable if I go up to a random person and start taking their picture.

Hi, I'm kinda new here and have bought this lens few days ago (used).

Here is yesterdays shot (f1.8, iso 200, 1/800, Canon 350D, minimal PP) and 100% crop:

My main gripe is CA in some situations, but I think that sharpness is excellent even wide open, I couldn't count on that with my 50 1.8

I have had both. The 50mm 1.4 just set in my case most of the time. I just love the 85mm.

Just got this lens in the mail and took a few test shots and I love it. This lens is quite amazing. It involved some range that I needed in my bag. Now I need to see if I want a 30, 50, and 85 prime in my bag or what's in my sig. Decisions decisions.

Thanks! My aperature was set to f/2.0 with the ISO set to 200 so I had shutter speeds around 1/3200 when I was shooting these. The trick was chasing them down while still maintaining enough distance to get the lens to focus and beat my daughter to it before she popped it. Lots of fun to shoot! I'll take a pic of the bubble blower and post it...the bubbles it produces are huge. At least 6 - 8 inches in diameter.

LOLOL! Love the ghetto hat.

I had another play about just now. Found some Canon red card. :) Thought I would muck about. Then got annoyed that catchlights on lenses are a pain to nail on a 135L so I came up with another new wallpaper.

I think it works fantastic!

These were shot with my XTi, ISO1600 f/2 and I was getting good shutter speeds. Some of the shots I could have done ISO800 but I wanted to keep the shutter speed high.

Make that three! I have an 85L that I love to bits, but find it just a little too long, even on full frame. I bought another 50mm f/1.4 (sold one some years back) just for the focal length. Optically it's not quite the same, but none of my clients are complaining. :)

I just don't reach for the 85mm that often... :(

I think i need to get rid of mine and pick up a 30mm f/1.4 and a nifty 50. I'm just afraid there will be a time when my 24-60 f/2.8 woun't be long enough and the 70-200 is no good for very low light which is when I actually use this lens...

In fact, since I recently added 135L, even it has seen more action than 85 1.8.

Can I borrow these if I ever decide to sell my 17-40mm????

Hah! JK! Excellent shots. This lens is really lookin' nice for someone that can't justify dropping 85 1.2 money!

I think its better to show Your lens when yous sell it. You should just buy a 85 1.8 and take the same shots. Just set it next to a window and open it up to 1.8 and shoot.

Am I insane for not having found a good use for this focal length yet (besides tight portraits, obviously)?

Also works great on the street and at festivals where there are lots of people, colors and stuff going on.

I'm in a regional band that gets a lot of festival work. I shoot before and after gigs with the 85mm.

I used it as a walk around lens a couple of times. All my low light stuff. Drag racing. Birds (Close birds). Flowers. Landscapes.

I can keep going.

Just got my 85 last week and went to visit some friends who were expecting a baby. Her water broke when we were at dinner and after a long 18 hours she had this beautiful baby. I am so impressed with this lens. I would have never gotten this shot without it.

Kinda tough to answer this question, because it is totally dependent on the available light. I shoot with a crop camera, so to avoid camera shake I need to shoot at shutter speeds above 136 (1.6x85). However, I have had sharp results at much slower speeds. It just becomes more difficult to count on the shot. Do you have a good understanding of exposure? If not, do a quick google or thread search and your question will be answered.

take the UV filter off (especially if it's a cheap one) and close down a little would help. Usually when you shoot directly into a light source, some amount of flare is to be expected.
