A few pics from the local dragstrip:
1.) Little bit of CA on that one. I've noticed this under certain conditions using this lens...
Wide open will do it. Not sure when it goes away if you stop down. High contrast areas and crome will do it every time.

Yeah, I always notice it on chrome and other highly reflective surfaces. Those shots weren't made wide-open, but close enough.

seems like when i was testing/messing around, it was gone somewhere between f4 & 5.6.
of course this was on the highest point of contrast of the images-

I just picked mine up tonight from another POTN member. I have a feeling this is going to become my favorite lens for portraits!
1. The first shot with it, trying it out before I bought it.

2. A quick shot in the car before we left.

3. Walking into a friends house. This one is a pretty heavy crop.

4.Going into the restaurant to eat dinner, I got a good bit of motion blur on this one (1/60th) but I still like it.

I got rid of this lens when I got the 85LII, sometimes I miss it when I want to go light. I'm probably going to pick it up again someday. For the price this lens is unbelievable, definitely one of canon's best non L lens.

I was suppose to be going on a spending moratorium but I played with the 50mm 1.8 this week while of vacation and it faired well but I have always been thinking of getting this lens. I am losing and will probably purchase this lens this week. Dam!@$#%%^&#^ these pictures.
Have anyone here used the 100mm f2 lens and how does it compare to the 85 1.8. My usage will be indoor sports and family pics - indoors and outdoors as well.

Why is there such a price variance. B&H and Adorama has this lens for $379 plus free shipping, Amazon and Crutchfield has it for $449 and folks are selling them used for about $340 - why buy used when price is so close to new?
Oh well. I purchased new.

I did a very similar set of shots with a Disney toy using both the 28 1.8 (returned) and the 85 1.8. I wanted to see better performance on the 28 but the 85 killed it wide open. Unfortunately 28 was closer to the focal length I need. Have you compared your 28 and 85 for sharpness wide open? Do you think I may have just had a bad copy?

No, sounds about right. The 85 is sharper than the 28 when open by about a mile. The 28 is usable at f/1.8 but then when you look at other lenses in the same focal length like the SIGMA 30, it really isn't. With other words it should be MUCH sharper. My 28 was calibrated by CANON too.

How is the 85mm 1.8 underrated? Its one of Canon's biggest selling lenses. Everybody absolutely (and correctly) raves about it and loves it. Its the most praised and taked about Canon lens on any photo website.
A lens this admired and loved isn't underrated! Its rated as it should be... as a great lens!

What is the light source on her forehead? Nice capture, however she looks very orange. It's just reallyon her face, so it's not a WB issue. Maybe she's been getting a lot of sun? You'll enjoy the 85 1.8 just as much as many of us do. Good lens for the coin you give for it.

It was natural light outdoors at the river. Indeed she has been in the sun considerably...my kids spend most every day in the water somewhere.

where were the flashes positioned, if i may ask?
One 580EX II bounced off umbrella, set I believe at 1/8 or 1/4 positioned between me and the boy to his right at low level.
Second Vivitar 285HV at 1/8 behind the boy at the same line as umbrella pointed at him. It set higher than the umbrella. You can see the reflection of the second flash on the railings behind boys head, also his right hand is overexposed because of the second light. but it can be fixed easily in post processing.
I hope my explanation make a little more sense :-)

Yeah, Layer Mask -> Hue/Saturation -> Mess with the colors -> Use the brush tool and erase away the area you don't want to be effected.
Change the flow of the brush tool to make the edges blend nicely. Its a cool effect, I've used it for Black and Whites where there's certain items that I wanted to remain in color.

I absolutely adore this lens, imho one of the most underrated lenses in the whole EF Lineup! I bought this over a 50mm f1.4 about a year ago, was using it on a 40D at the time. I'm all grown up now, and got myself a 5dmk2...and this is where this lens really shines.
Now it stays on my camera almost all the time I love it to bits, here are a couple from the weekend.

Just got mine today. I love it already. Better build than EF 50 f1.4 and a lot quicker too. Same CA problems as the EF 50 but tolerable. I think I have a cracker!
Quick test shots all at f1.8. Focus is on the left eye. Shot in RAW and default settings. No sharpening of any sort, just white balance adjustment, and resize.

What an awesome combo the 5D and this one is. I actually think it's quite easy to get sharp eyes with the AF even wide open.
Also, the lens is built very well. I'm so happy with it, it's probably the best lens I've ever owned. The bokeh and sharpness is excellent - in fact, the only issue I have with it is CA wide open, but that is probably unavoidable anyway.
Here are some with some other subjects:

Honestly, I did very little. This lens is just that good when you get the conditions right. Lighting plays a seriously important role in this, as does choosing the right aperture. A lot of people when they take shots like this shoot them wide open because they want that shallow DOF effect, but that doesn't really make things as sharp as they could be. I stopped this one to f/3.5 I believe to make it sharper. In photoshop I use the unsharp mask filter to sharpen my photos, it works great.

the 135L is really nice on FF, i LOVE mine.....however if i absolutely had to chose between the two i may lean slightly toward the 85/1.8 due to a little more flexible FL, slightly faster and 700 dollar price difference..
one thing ive noticed about the 135L, it may just be mine, is in low light it seems to have a harder time finding focus on certain things in comparison to my 85/1.8 and 35L

The 85 is fast, but just not long enough. It was perfect on my 40d, but it's an inbetween now. It still wows me right now, but I wouldn't mind having the 135 as well. I wish I could find a good deal on it. Found one on the forum a week or so ago, but it was sold before I could even PM the seller. US datecode for $700 was an absolute steal.

If you manually focused, there should be no reason why the focus point changed when you took the shot. Did you use liveview with magnification or just the viewfinder?

Mine fringes a lot as well (purple around highlights, green around bokeh) but when I convert (I use RAWTherapee) the "chroma noise" reduction slider completely wipes out the fringing (and chroma noise, though I like the gritty luma) without any noticeable loss in detail.

does anyone find the MFD of the 85/1.8 limiting? By this I mean do you find that needing to be so far away from your target that in some cases, you lose the DOF effect that you're going for in a shot?

Yes. It's a weird focal length for me on FF. Just really don't like it, but it's a cheap focal length compared to me wanting to jump to the 135. The major price difference to sell one and purchase another is quite large for me. For me it's either too short or too long, and I wind up in those situations often with this lens. It's still a great lens, but I don't know if it's for me on FF.
Cl!ckFoto
6th of September 2009 (Sun), 18:55
I really enjoy the focal length, just sometimes wish I could get a bit closer to what I want to shoot. I will add a 135L soon because I miss that lens too damn much.
