I've had this lens for about 1 month now. I like it. I normally use it at F2.0, I'm a shallow depth of field addict although sometimes I wish I had closed the aperture a bit to get the whole head in focus, I guess that may come in time with more practice. Here are a couple of recent ones.

The poster likely meant bokeh. Depending on where you are, the pronunciation can easily cause someone to misspell it.

Took these today with th 85/1.8

I'm no editing pro, but it looks like a slight decrease in saturation. That appears to be the only thing, unless he did a selective increase on saturdation on the car.

To me, it looks like the entire image has a decrease in saturation.

The canon 1.4 wont work with the 85, not sure about the other brands.

For the price I would think the 100 2.0 would be a better option.

Chris R/T, weezerfan84 got it almost correct:

The base image was duplicated (2 layers). The upper one desaturated just to the point where the car's color would stand out enough and then a layer mask added to show the original (lower layer).

Hi, I have had the 85f1.8 and sold it to buy something else.:(
Now I have 17-55f2.8IS, 70-200f4IS and 50f1.4 but never really happy with
50f1.4 on my 30D for portrait works. I mean for my tastes is too long indoor and too short outdoor. And more, comparing old 85 shoots with 50 ones I find on the 85 better separation between subject and background and really better bokeh.
So I am thinking to sell 50f1.4 and buy again 85f1.8:Dor maybe 100f2:confused:.
I read these are very similar but for my uses so portrait outdoor what do you think will be better? Maybe 100f2 a little bit longer help to separat subject more than 85?

I briefly played with my friend's 100mm and it didn't seem like a huge difference from the FOV. Keep in mind the 85mm is equivilant to a 135mm lens on a APS-C sensor, while 100mm is equal to 160mm. Also the 100mm is f/2 while the 85mm is f/1.8, so the 85 will perform better in low light.

I used this lens on my Rebel XT and loved it. Here is a shot I posted in this thread:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=8219671&postcount=2129

I don't think it's too long of a focal range at all, and I would also argue that a majority of the pics posted in this thread were taken using cropped bodies.

Ive gotten worse than that from mine. You just have to be careful with the lens that wide open and with people wearing white or black with contrasting colors in the background.

Best way to fix it is either DPP or just convert to B&W.

That's a great shot, the pruple fringe will be bad in high contrast and widest apperture.
I can say the purple fringe on the 85 f1.8 is similar to the 50 f1.4 .

They are both great primes and I love em both.

I found slide the saturation bar for both purple and magenta to zero in lightroom works the best.
99% of the time my pictures do not have these two colors in the background or on the subject.

Man....look at that bokeh.
I can't get that unless I have a 135mm f/2 or a 5d :(

+1. i can see some of the same type of noise at the bottom of the image on her back as well. It is possible they used a noise reduction technique on only that left side, since the noise on her back is reduced from what is on the RHS.

eiter way (noise reduction or not) thats some weird noise.

thx. I like shooting with this lens at 1.8 in natural light. It gives a great bokeh. Love the narrow DOF making her back eye OOF in the second pic.

May I ask what kind of processing you do to the skin in a portrait like this?

Thanks

I wanted some more negative space on the right so I selected small portion of the right side of pic and stretched it. Photoshop didn't like that apparently ;)

I'd love to know as well. I'm assuming CSx and some healing tools/smoothing tools but that is just a guess.

Pretty quick in Photoshop CS4, I use Topaz Adjust: Increase the Sharpen. Then decrease the Details which gets rid of blemishes.
Then if the skin still has obvious blemishes I'll use Imagenomics Portraiture. I don't enjoy spending 4 hours with a healing brush, clone stamp to process skin. ;)

Seriously that portrait is awesome. Also, from a non photographic, and slightly pervy point of view, her baps are incredible!

I agree I do over process at times but I post on Model Mayhem and that's what the models like.;) Also it takes way too long to clean up pics with spot healing brush, clone stamp so I use quick photoshop plugins.

First time I hear someone googled "baps" - wonder if that came up with some dodgy pictures!

On a serious note, I hear where you're coming from - hours with the healing brush comes out with a better result, but if you're client doesn't appreciate it or even wants it, I guess there's no point in doing it! Nice pics and model btw!

You'd be surprised, only mention 1 mention of "baps" on first page of google. ;)

I agree totally. You can retain more detail with healing brush but I can get about 90% of the desired look with quick plugins. And most models never notice the difference. They only care about flawless skin.

To get back on topic, the 85/1.8 on my 50D is a great lens for model shoots b/c the long focal distance on my 50D is very flattering. I have a Tamron 17-50/2.8 which is really sharp but if I shoot at 17mm b/c I'm too lazy to move back, it'll make the model look bad. Big nose, chin and small ears. With the 85/1.8, I have to back up more but I know the model will look better.

But can I advise you? though it is pure fun to shoot portrait in f/1.8, and this is what I did a lot once i got the lens, but I think the lens 85mm starts to be really delicious at f/2.2 -2.8...

Yea I understand the sweet spot isnt nessasarily at f/1.8. However, I had just got it, and I wanted to see what 1.8 at that focal length would be like.

For example, an assignment for the paper this week was to get an image of a university worker that had a booth up for Domestic Violence Prevention or something like that.
Here it is at f/4.5

Size it to 700 or 800 pixels on the longest side (1024 is really too big) and upload it to another site like www.imageshack.us or www.imgur.com -- they allow bigger files.
