^great shot! Is it a large difference between 1.8 and 2 in case of light gathering?(i'm thinking not) Because i a'm thinking of getting either 85 1.8 and sigma 30 1.4, or 100 f2 and 50 1.4 (either sigma or canon)...but i have read a lot of bad reviews about sigma 30....kinda thinking of the 100+50, because 50 +85 is quite close...

I don't care for 50mm on APS-C cameras. I borrowed a friend's Sigma 30mm for a week and it seemed to be the *perfect* FL! Such natural looking pictures. I think 30+85mm is a great combo for croppers, 50+100 would be nice for FF.

The difference is a third of a stop. That's a considerable difference.

Many people love their copies of the Sigma 30. As for what to get, make your decision based on focal lengths, not speed. There's a considerable difference between 30mm and 50mm.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the 35/85-ish combo for crop. It just feels strange to me. On FF, I think it's perfect! So for me, the natural two prime combo on APS-C is 24/50.

The thing is i tried out 50 on FF (5d mark 2...omg i was crying all evening...probably the hardest thing that i had to do EVER was to give it back...) and although it seemed perfect, but somewhat i wanted a little bit longer...so 85 on FF would be probably perfect for just all around for me :) But when i want to do some street i find that 70mm of my siggy is too short (also just a little) and i need that large aperture. So the thing is i want 2 primes one a little bit wider (more like 50 on crop) - for all around, and the other for my type of photography. Agh...if i hadn't read that Ken Rockwells (as well as photozone) review on 30mm it would seem to that it is a "no brainer"....
Oh if just wasn't so darn picky... it took me almost a year to buy a dslr...

So do you have FF or crop camera now? Sigma 30 won't work on the FF cameras. Also, 85mm on a FF looks like 50mm on a crop camera.

You have this statement wrong. An 85mm on a FF IS 85mm, on a crop it is 136mm.

What I meant was if you have a FF camera with an 85mm lens and a crop camera with a 50mm lens, they will have amost the same angles of view. 50x1.6=80mm

Gusy, i have a quick question. i was trying to take some shots of a golf club a few nights ago. When I press the shutter half way down, the focus would go in/out -in/ out--etc... Is this becouase the subject was black and it could not focus or is something wrong w/ the lens?

thanks

Either not enough light to focus or you are below the minimum focus distance.

The focus point needs some contrast to be able to do its job. So yes, if you were aiming the focus point at a spot that is totally black, it will not be able to do it. This isn't an issue with the lens in particular.

With a very small window of accuracy at f/2, any lens will have difficulty keeping up with the back and forth of a swing if you try and make it track continually. It is easier to pre-focus at the top of the arc and then fire off when they swing in to the focus zone.

Example >>> http://i.imgur.com/F6aNa.jpg (shot with 200/2.8 @ f/2.8 and a 12mm ext. tube, no cropping done)

You will probably have better luck shooting at f/2.8 or even f/4.

I was shooting some track and field (getting the whole body in the frame) and they looked like crap at such high aperture. If the shoe was in focus, the face was not.. very narrow DOF to work with. Shooting at f/4 (like with my razor sharp 70-200) got better results.

Collin, thank you. I really didn't do anything to the faces in particular. I do adjust levels and/or curves to get the midtones brighter and to provide deep, contrasty blacks. I also often dup the layer and set it to multiply, fading opacity/masking/erasing as needed (which was done, sloppily, to #5).

I am interested also,

Thanks! See above! :)

You're right! When I proof, I generally go through them all really quickly. If/when they order that shot I'll go back and get it perfect. Thanks!

Took the kids to see Disney Princesses on Ice at the Birmingham NIA this afternoon. I have the 70-200 f4 IS on the camera in my ruck sack. Security staff would not let me take the 70-200 in, they said big professional lenses were not allowed. Luckily I had the 85 1.8 as well. Lighting was tricky but I think I got better shots with the 85 than I would have done if using the 70-200 F4 since the light was scarce.

Shot on my friend's copy.

It was a total mistake to sell this for a 50 1.4 - Sure, the 50 was a more suitable length for me at the time and it's sharper, but the bokeh difference is night and day to me between the two lenses. I'm gonna have to either trade the 50 1.4 back to an 85 1.8, or buy an 85 1.8 next time.

Quick question.
Should I buy a new 85mm f/1.8 from like bhphoto or adorama for like 450ish?
Or should I save about 100 give/take by waiting patiently and search the web for a used one?

Depends on your comfort level. I vote used because if that lens doesn't work out and you feel you'd like a different focal length or something, you can always resell again and not be out much $. If you buy new, you can expect to lose about 15-20% selling used. My $0.02.

if ur asking a question like that then buy used cuz if u can buy new without a problem then u wouldn't ask. lol

im trashed made a point if you buy it used and don't like it u can always sell it for around the same price.

This lens sharp as a 50mm 1.8?

MUCH sharper. When I bought my 50mm f/1.8 and compared it to my 85mm I thought "this isn't even sharp as people say, what a piece of crap). The nifty is $100, the 85mm is $400, this is clearly a case of "you get what you pay for."

I actually have to disagree with that Dave, on a personal basis. Perhaps you got a dodgy copy or I got an exceptionally good copy, but my Nifty was almost as sharp as the 85/1.8 at all apertures. As for the $100 vs. $400, I'd argue it's more about the far better build quality, AF, USM (and hence FTM). That's what you're paying for, but not much extra in terms of sharpness. Bokeh is an exception - the 85 is clearly better there, but definitely not sharpness.

Well it must be one or the other I guess.

This is my second copy of a 50mm 1.8
I had one before (was still quite a newb in photography) and it didn't really produce any exceptionally sharp images that I can remember. So I sold it to help fund my Sigma 24-60 f/2.8 (nice sharp lens).

Also my friend took pictures at a wedding with his 50mm, and at f/5.6 (outdoor group shot) it was still quite soft. This could have been due to user error, but I couldn't really see ANYTHING sharp in the picture. He would have got better results with his 18-55IS I think.

Also I find that I just don't care for 50mm... I like 85mm to do headshots and I plan on getting the Sigma 30mm (which I used for a week) and fell in love with that focal length.

For $100 it's a nice lens to do portraits (a little soft is OK) or artistic stuff.

The reason I actually sold my 50mm was because, ironically, I found it difficult to consistently to get a sharp picture - NOT because the optics weren't good, but because of the crappy AF. Oh, and my copy had a focus shift issue which made shooting anything further than 15 metres useless. But assuming the AF was spot on, head & shoulders portraits with my old Nifty were really sharp.

I posted a few of these in the wedding forum as well, but they qualify here as well, all shot with the 85 1.8.

Thanks! I approached the kid's mother after I took these shots and offered to send them by email later, and their whole family enjoyed them very much.
