I find that shooting at such a high aperture and long FL it's very easy to miss the focus.
I shot my friend Jamie wide open and hit his glove by accident, his face is OOF. For this reason I mostly shoot f/2 or higher.

Captain when you took this shot did you manually focus in order to capture more of the scene in focus or did you autofocus on one of the people or an item and let the camera handle it? Trying to learn here. What I've notice is that if I have several people in a picture and they are not on the same plane (side by side to each other) and I autofocus on say the middle person one of them would be slightly out of focus if shot with a wide aperture so I end up stopping down to say f8 to try and capture all of them in focus. So what I am asking is what is the trick to capture all in focus with a wide aperture.
Thanks...Al

DOF depends on your focal length, aperture and the distance you are to them. In this case, he shot it with a 40D so 1.6 crop, and so on the picture itself he'll already have a deeper DOF. At effective 136mm FOV he's quite a distance from them, and they are pretty much aligned parallel to the sensor plane, so f/2 did it well enough.

The South has its downsides, but weather isn't one of them.
Last year we had one day of snow. One.
And that was a day more than the year before.
Of course, for those who dislike heat and humidity, the South is a nightmare. You can sweat right through you shirt simply walking to the mailbox and back.
Doesn't bother me much as I just hit the swimming pool. I'm more allergic to coldd.;)

This is incorrect. Canon does. The only difference is that you have to send an imported lens back to your dealer and that dealer has to be an authorized Canon dealer. That dealer sends the lens to Canon and Canon will honor the warranty.
US lenses can be sent to Canon USA directly by end users, without involving the dealer.
Fact of the matter is, that if you call Canon and tell them that you have a gray lens under international warranty, they will let you send the lens directly, but they want to see a copy of the receipt.

According to B&H, USA gets Canon warranty. International gets B&H warranty
About USA and GREY MARKET (DIRECT IMPORT) Products
Items marked "USA" are imported and/or distributed by the manufacturer or the manufacturer's official licensed importer/distributor and are warranted by them. Items marked "IMP" are imported and/or distributed by other entities and are warranted by B&H Photo-Video. "IMP" products do not qualify for manufacturer's rebate programs. There is no difference in the item itself.
From what I read, the USA versions get Canon's 5-year warranty. Imported or gray market lenses do not, if you buy it from B&H you only get their 1-year warranty.

WOW! Amazing photographs, what a lens!
I ended up here after checking a thread about people's favorite non-L lenses and saw this one mentioned quite often. After seeing the price, I decided to check it out more thoroughly. I love the sharpness, the bokeh, the solid construction and fast focusing. And the f/1.8 is very nice, it can get dark here in Finland in winter.
I've already got the kit lens 18-55mm IS f/3.5-5.6. I mostly photograph dogs at thee moment (mine and her friends) - and the kit lens seems just a tad short most of the time (I hardly ever leave 55mm). My dream lens has been 70-200mm f/4 L, but it's just a tad expensive right now. So I moved on to considering 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. The zoom range would be nice - but I'm hesitant about the focus accuracy, the sharpness, the construction (plastic mount for example), the colors the lens produces...
The price of the 85mm would be between those two lenses - I think I could stretch that much. And like I said, I love the focus accuracy and speed people are raving about (my dog is fast, most of the time the kit lens doesn't hold up). And that bokeh - I've been missing being able to produce good bokeh.
Actually the only thing I'm worried about is that I would be restricted to 85mm. Then again, it might be healthy to do more zooming with my legs and working within the situation as it is. I know there'd be lots of times when 85 would be too little, and times, when it would be too much. Then again, I have a friend photographing her dogs with 100mm and she's doing very well, adore her pics.
Yet, I love the look of the pictures this lens produces...
Kind of rambling here, and not clearly asking any questions, but if anyone has any perspective to this cheap zoom (the L zoom is just most probably out of my reach at the moment) and a quality prime lens, I'd really appreciate any input.

I have a sigma 70-200 here in Sweden and i have to say the 85mm is getting alot more use then that one in the winter darkness, also don't forget about weight my 70-200 makes the camera feel a lot more burdensome to sling around then the 85mm.
85mm compared to 50-55mm is quite different to me at least it feels like the focal length gives me more leeway if as the subject has to move longer to get too big or too smal :???:
Photographing dogs however as they move around a lot even though i love primes seems like one are where zooms are preferable. On the other hand you can always run after them.

@ ElinaS
I have both and the winter is the season I use the 55-250 the least... It's too slow to use in the dark -and its dark almost all the time, as you're obviously experiencing over in finland too:p If I bring it, I bring a tripod as well, and I don't shoot action with it... my 200mm @ f2.8 with monopod is at the limit for what I can do in the dark -its challenging but if I take my time and tries my best, I usually get a few shots that are good enough to work with.. the 85 is alot easier to handhold, but there too, it can be a bit challenging to get sharp results sometimes (I need a camera with better ISO-capabilities:p).. but I prefer the 85 over the 55-250 for low-light stuff, no doubt..
