Recieved my 85 f/1.8 today. Initial impression is very good!
It's sharp, USM AF is silent and fast - even reasonably fast in poor lighting.
This is only my second lens purchase...I feel that now I can start to get creative :)
The DOF at large apertures will take abit of getting used to though.

Did you really use the screen of your mobile phone to light this shot? I guess it must have been incredibly dark to warrant 30 seconds at f/2!

I've wanted this lens for a while now and finally picked up a copy! I don't know why I didn't earlier its great. Here are my contributions. All were tripod mounted, no PP other than resize for web.

To test its light gathering ability, I shot this one in a dark room with the exception of my 42" TV on pause. This was the only light source. I used the AF assist on my 430EX then turned it off. I am pleased with the clarity and sharpness in this scenario.

Not a great pic but....well....bokeh, that's all I can say. It's so creamy I want to pour it on my cereal. I want to spread it on toast, put it in my coffee, whatever.

i just picked up this lens about a week ago. i must say im impressed by the build quality, the focus ring is solid and very well damped. its cool to take the lens off the body and look through the front element. there a lot of glass in there!! ill post some pics later.

Ok... given we can get up close and personal with 170 mph sleds, ( like withing 12-30 ft ).... would this lens not be the purfect lens for us to caption excellent high speed clear action shots? I use a tripod so IS means very little to me at this point.

your comments please..

pic below taken with kit lens from XTi on TV mode, 400 ISO, 1/500 shutter speed on tripod. this was at 55mm full extension of kit lens so I'm thinking the 85mm would be purfect?

Hi, the 85mm should do you a treat. The focussing is in a different world to the kit lens, as is the image quality, so you should be delighted with it!

The 85mm f/1.8 is the first prime lens I've ever used. And I couldn't be happier with the results. Am very glad that I decided to take the chance on a non-zoom lens. Apologies for the gratuitous pet pictures, but they were the subjects at hand this past weekend.

They're great shots Shawn! The 85mm f/1.8 certainly seems to be one of the best non-L lenses that Canon make. It's razor sharp and lightning fast (I'm hopefully getting a 135mm f/2 L this summer, so it will be interesting comparing them!)

HI Mike,

I absolutely love the 85mm f/1.8 and for me, on my 30D it's a great focal length for studio headshots, outdoor portraits and some general outdoor shooting. I can't say enough about it. Fast AF on a par with the AF in my 70-200mm f/4 L, and sharp as hell.

If the focal length works for you (figurative you, not just Mike, lol) then I think this is a no brainer. Optically it's outstanding and the build and feel are excellent. The only prime that would be a better choice is the 85mm f/1.2 L for gobs more money and my understanding is that the AF is a little slower, but optically it must be a killer.

Here´s another dog + 85 1.8 combination :): Portrait of a hovawart called Kata. 5D, f2.8 1/200 sec, 50 asa. Lights: SB24 reflected from an umbrella, camera left (just outside the frame), good ol´ sun used as hairlight.

Quoting this again because it deserves to be. I'm floored by this photo every time I see it. Stunning image.

That's a good shot. How close can you get if you use 68mm of extention tubes? Post one of those.

25mm tube is it for me. Taken at about 8" away. Tack on another 25mm tube may get you down to 4" and even more magnification. Would be interesting to try for sure !

I was thinking about the same a few weeks ago. I decided for the 85mm now and perhaps the 60mm (or the 100mm) later :) They are two quite different lenses but the price is quite close.

I ran through the same decision and figured I would rather have the longer focal length. So far, I am impressed with my copy.

I still want a dedicated macro lens too but I'll have to wait a bit for that...especially since I can't decide which one I want!

On my crop camera this was my favorite lens by far. The images at 2.0 up were just so tack sharp is was laughable to see the 1.2L at stratospheric prices.

Unfortunately, since I upgraded to a 5D I need a 135L to get that same field of view. Oh well, Canon lenses hold their value...and I can see why.
