Thanks for the comments, that was shot wide open at 1.8.
Lbaldwin, as gnnbtrn already said, this lens is far from being a macro, it's minimum focusing distance is somewhere around 3 feet...but it's great at what it does.
With that picture of the nutcracker, were you using center point focus and then recomposing, or did you use a spot on the right? That's one thing I'm trying to understand is how to focus when your subject is off center.
Thanks---great photo btw.

Thanks---great photo btw.Use the focus point that is "on" the area of the subject that you want to have in critical focus.
When I shoot with wide apertures, I use the "joystick" on my 40D to move the focus point to where I want it. When I shoot with narrower apertures, I'll sometimes focus and recompose.

With that particular photo I just used to center point to lock focus and then recomposed, but that is probably not the ideal way to do it especially when working with shallow DOF. Had this been a more important photo and not a quick christmas card shot in between commercials I would have used runninmann's technique.

A couple of test shots (testing bokeh and wide-open sharpness) from the 85 1.8 I think I will be selling, just not the FL I want on the 7D, and will stick with the 50 1.4. But the 85 1.8 kicks butt wide open, almost just like the 85L I had in the past.

I had the 50 1.4 and I like the 85 1.8 much more on a crop body..it's all preference I guess.
I had the 50 f1.8 and also prefer the 85 on crop. On FF (my 35mm) I don't like the 85, it's not long but not wide enough for anything. That's why I got my Siggy 30mm :p

You should be able to push the joystick down, maneuver over to the AF point selection, click again, and then select the point you want.

I have been looking at this lens but need some help. This is my first post on this forum and I wish I found it years ago. I just picked up a 7d body to replace my xti which I found lacking on my summer trip to Australia. I wanted better low light pictures. Here is my lens makeup right now. Two kit lenses from the xti which include the 18-55 and 55-250 both IS. I am very happy with longer lens since I don't use it that often but it gives wonderful pictures. I also have a the canon 28 f1.8 prime and a 24-105 f4L and considered the 70-200 2.8 but found the difference in IQ didn't justify carrying around that lens for the amount of time I need the reach and f2.8. As you can see from my collection, I am a little limited on my inside photos. Pictures I took last summer of my nephew playing basketball were a disappointment due to the low shutter speeds even using ISO of 1600 with all lenses except the 28 which didn't have the reach. I am now thinking of the 50mm 1.4 due to the 50 f1.8 being almost what I have now with the 28 or possibly the 85 f1.8. Here are my concerns about my possible choices and perhaps I can get some real life experience and suggestions. for th 50mm f 1.4, all I read and see are problems with the micro usm vs the ring usm. For the 85 f1.8, I am concerned about the effective 130mm reach but I think I have the lower end of that covered with the 28mm prime. My walk around lens is the L which I just love and it gives just unreal results. I understand that the kit lens from my xti will not take advantage of the sensor on my 7d so with all that being said, any help would be appreciated.

The 85mm 1.8 is said to be one of the best bargain basketball lenses if you can frame your shots right with it. Go for it! I loved mine, but sold it off to fund for a more usable 50 1.4- will buy the 85mm 1.8 again, or get an 85L.

I picked up the lens and took a few pictures. First thing I noticed was on the 7d, I can't use the 19 focus points or everything is out of focus (at least at f1.8. With spot focusing I get a nice picture. I can see that I am going to have to learn how to use this on the camara as well as figure out how to take a 18mp picture and get it down to the size that I can upload
shooting information: canon 7D, 1/125; f 1.8 ISO 1600 using P mode for both.

I was playing with the 400D hack, which includes new ISOs (up to 3200) plus spot metering and the selection of up to 42 different focus points configurations.
First example, shot with the 85 f1.8 at ISO200, partial metering and with the three right hand focus points active, f2.8, 1/500sec.
Second example, also at ISO200, f2.8, 1/500sec.

The stage was not very well lit tbh, in that last one I just managed to capture the artist in a good side position because there were no lights in front of the stage, just in the sides.

Gotta question maybe some of you could help answer.
I have a 50d and currently have the 50mm f/1.4 prime.
Looking at these pictures, I'm loving the bokeh of the 85mm.
Would it be worth it to go ahead and add this lens to my set?
Or is it too close in focal length to the 50mm?
Does anybody own both lenses? If so, how do they compare?
Thanks for any responses!

No they're not very close, but that's quite subjective. But you don't need us to answer this for you; you have a 28-135. If you want to make a quick and easy comparison, just set the lens to 50mm, then 85.

Yeah, well, this is true. :) I was wondering also though if the quality of the 85mm is any better than the 50mm? I've seen some people saying they moved on from the 50mm and have found that the 85mm is quite a bit more sharp.

Also, it depends on what kind of pictures you would like to take with the lenses. For example, if it is portrait which is mainly headshots, taken from a not-too-far distance (like living room), 85mm is quite suitable.

I guess it's because 50mm is usually said to be not too sharp wide open. Some people even said that it's not usable at 1.4. And it may be just the copy that you have. But it is usually said that the 85mm is sharp from 1.8 on.
I cannot testify to the above claim as I haven't had them both. These are just what I heard.

I find both lenses to perform pretty well. ;) Is the 85mm conceivably sharper than the 50? Not by much. The 50 is a little soft wide-open, but past f/2 I couldn't find much of a difference.
The biggest issue should be the focal length. Many people find 85mm to be quite long on APS-C. I personally use the 85mm as a street/event lens and it does a fabulous job at that. I don't really use it for anything else on APS-C. It also gets used quite a bit on my full-frame (5D) camera (85mm on FF gives roughly same FoV as 50 on APS-C), but for completely different reasons due to the different field of view. In other words, I certainly regard the focal lengths to be substantially different.

The 50 and 85 are substantially different focal lengths, but still too close for me to own both. If you want to own both lenses, I'd check out the 100/2 if I were you as it has the same design but is a bit further apart.

Thank you all for your input. I do understand that since I have a crop sensor that the focal lengths between the two are quite a bit different, as 50mm on mine would be like an 85mm on yours. I've just sort of compared my 50mm photos to the examples here of those taken with the 85mm and am finding the 85mm to seem a tad sharper, even after I've micro-adjusted my 50mm. I do believe that my 50mm is sharp, but the 85mm seems to have just a little more oomph? :) I think I will look into the 85mm a bit more as well as consider the 100mm. Thanks a lot guys, appreciate it!

You have to be a bit careful comparing sharpness using a thread like this. Remember, the modern digital photographer incorporates post-production in their 'showcase' shots. Most shots posted in a thread like this would have been tinkered with on the computer, which generally includes sharpening. ;) From a sharpness point of view, there should be a negligible difference between the 50 and 85 past f/2, assuming all other factors are kept the same. Again, you need to base your decision on the focal lengths. This is overwhelmingly the important factor here.

Oh I know, I PP the heck out of a lot of my photos, I know that I can make them look like they came from an L lens, just wondering if this lens would perhaps shorten the process? Thanks for your input. :)

"POP" is more attributable to lighting and PP than it is to any quality of the lens. The 85mm is a cracker but I wouldn't stress about the differences between it and your 50.

Hey all, quick question:
I just ordered the 85mm 1.8 for portraits. I currently have a 50D. I see many people saying that the 85mm is an amazing portraiture lens.. do they mean on a FF or on a 1.6 crop?
For instance, is the 85mm good for crops, and 135mm for FF
OR
Is the 85mm good for FF and 50mm for crops?
I know it's subjective, I'm just curious as to what format most people refer to when they say these things.

I've shot the 85/1.8 on both the 5D and 50D. I personally found it too long for portraits on APS-C (1.6x), but it is a fantastic lens for street photography. I much prefer the FoV for portraits when on the 5D. The 'pop' is quite amazing on full-frame too, certainly not far off from my old 85L.

I think your shot of the Harbor Bridge is one of the best locations (reminds me of the Matrix ending) I found in my trip to OZ over the summer (for us). One of the major reasons I picked up the 85mm was due to my messing up once in a lifetime shots like this one trying to hand hold a 24-105 f4L since I left my mini tripod at home. Based on what I have seen from the 85mm, this would have been a clean shot hand held.

I love my 85mm on crop. If i went to FF I would really want a 135mm. Great for headshots and times when my 70-200 can't keep up in low light.
I dont' care for 50mm on crop (I had 2 50 f/1.8 before, found they were either too long or not wide enough) this is why I got my lovely Sigma 30mm f/1.4 :) Again if I went to FF i think I would get a 50 f/1.4 for the same FOV.

You're thinking about the F. W. Woolworths company. :) The one in the shot is Woolworths Limited, a large Australian retail chain which bears no historical relation to F. W. - the common name is complete coincidence. ;)
I think your shot of the Harbor Bridge is one of the best locations (reminds me of the Matrix ending) I found in my trip to OZ over the summer (for us). Hey there. :) If you wanted to handhold a shot like that, the 24-105L should have been far more appropriate due to the IS. The 85/1.8 is not particular good for handholding shots at low shutter speeds!

I use it often with both the 400D and 50D. First shot taken with the 400D at ISO100, f7.1, 1/320sec. Second shot taken with the 400D at ISO200, f2.2, 1/160sec.

Your welcome. Some are probably referring to cropped cameras that its too long, when you are using it on a 5D a full-frame sensor..

One of the problems with using this lens on a crop. I was too close - the little guy was moving really fast.
