Great loooong thread.
I'm thinking about getting this lens, I already have the 50mm 1.4 and I have issues with focus sometimes. Can the 85mm be a challenge to focus at well? (I probably just have to practice more)

Seriously though, being limited to one lens (and a prime at that) may result in some really amazing shots...just looking at the bright side!

I've used my coworkers 85 1.2 and it's a beautiful thing but the 1.8 is no slouch either. I owned it many years ago and sold it after I realized i wasn't doing any portraiture but now I'm doing much more of it since I've become a sort of strobist freak so I purchased one again recently. Tried it out on my wife today who consequently was trying on some new lipstick and gloss which has a bit more color than her usual "natural" looking makeup and thought I'd try to do a glamor shot and this lens was just superb at capturing the detail.

it is a pretty long lens on crop.... its like having a 136mm lens on FF.... IMO this 85mm prime is more an "outdoor" prime on crop bodies.

Yeah for sure, I find it really hard taking pictures with this lens, I guess i'm never really in candid type conditions lol, I need to upgrade to a FF soon.
richierich1212

Yeah 85mm is long on crop and I feel it's hard to get sharp shots since you got to really up the shutter speed and have steady hands.

My pictures come out very dark when i'm focusing on something far away in low light, even if I use my flash and fiddle with my shutter and aperture.

love that third shot for sure, she looks so happy lol!
But you know what, I parked my arse for about 15 minutes at that intersection before I got a shot I was happy with. It was one of those busy intersections where the cars go crazy for about three minutes before all lights turn red and the pedestrians then go crazy crossing in all directions. I'd shoot, then chimp during the green lights and repeat. It didn't help that the day was boiling.. something like 37 degrees C. My damn arse cheeks were sweating. The great thing with the 85 is it's so small and inconspicuous.. when I used the 70-200L, it was so much easier to attract attention and hence unwanted staring! You should really go out and shoot some candids with the 85, you'll love it!
Salma
3rd of February 2010 (Wed), 04:34
LMAO, thankyou so much for the detailed response about your sweaty asscheeks, FANTASTIC! HAHA!
I suppose going out with my lens during day time and taking some shots would be an idea, to be honest i'm totally hooked on my 28mm 1.8, even though it's a wide angle lens and distorts alot, I just can't seem to get my hands off it lol.
I think I might pop out today with my 85mm :)

I'm confused with this statement...even with the flash. Can you post pictures? A gentleman in the flash forum has a problem where his 430 flash but the pics come out dark...seems like a flash problem to him.

i like the 85mm on crop it's the same as 135mm which i think is a decent FL for candid, headshots, and street photography.
with flash if set right should be able to light up your subject with the 85mm just fine.
here are two examples i posted before, both in low light.
