Alright, I see plenty of great portraits and still lifes shot with the 85 1.8. I've been using my 85 1.8 mostly for high school sports (basketball). I'm shooting with a brand new 50D, but whenever I'm shooting AI Servo, with the athletes running straight at me, I'm always focused just slightly behind the subject. It's gotten terribly frustrating--anyone have any advice or insight??

Tawcan, the 2nd picture is brilliant!

I'm really considering buying this lens for portraits aswell, got a question for you guys though:

My current equipment is a 450D with Tamron 17-50mm and I will buy an amateur studio flash setup in a week or so. But being a student living at a campus, the only space I have available for setting up the set is my own room (outdoors would be a possibility but only after alot of practice ;)). Because of the 1.6 crop factor of my camera, i'm kinda worrying about the distance I would need for a decent picture.
The obvious question then is what I'd consider a decent picture: well i'm not sure yet, i'm kinda new to portrait photography. I did a calculation (http://tawbaware.com/maxlyons/calc.htm) just the other day of how big my field of vision would be at a distance of 3 meters of the model, and it turned out to be around 80x53cm, that doesn't sound very good to me but what the hell do I know ;). The max distance I would be able to create is 3,5 meters (would have to move some crap for this) away from the model btw, which would give me a FOV of 92x61cm.

So the question is for those who shoot with a crop camera & this lens: what kind of distance from your model do you find yourself most often at, and could you supply some example pictures with that?

Thanks. Those pictures were taken with XSi/450D. I find the 85 a bit long when using indoor. When I shot those pictures in the studio I had to go back quite a bit of distance. I think I was like 3 or 4 metres away from the model. If you are in a tight space the lens is basically unusable unless you take very tight frame portraits. When shooting outside where space isn't the limiting factor I really like the 85.

Hope this helps.

Sorry fellas, I haven't been here for awhile. I actually bought an 85 f/1.2L, so now I'm in a position to compare both. The good news is - I'm also keeping my 1.8.

Firstly, it's undeniable that the 85/1.2L has Godly IQ. I've gotten some comments (through my posts in this thread over the years) that my copy of the 85/1.8 was superb - well, the 85L is just as sharp, if not sharper at f/1.2 than my 1.8 at 1.8. Hardly any CA either. Colours and contrast are spectacular and the images do have something special to them.

On the other hand, the 85L is big (and I mean really big and fat), heavy (cannot be understated) and the AF is slow. For street and travel photography, I'll still be using the 1.8.

i just got this lens yesterday, im really surprised at how small this lens is. from all the pictures ive looked at, it looks longer. i like the weight of it and how smooth the focus ring is. although the lens hood spins around freely, but thats ok i guess. cant wait to shoot some photos today after work!

I finally added this lens, and all I can say is what a difference a body makes. With some real world shooting using both my bodies, I'm not too impressed with the 85/1.8 on my 40D. However, on the 1Ds this lens really performs well. Perhaps a body and lens calibration is in order for the 40D.

Any example pics taken using a 400d?

My next question is if its better to buy this lens along with a 70-200 f4 for the same price as a 70-200 f2.8 on its own?

Why are prime lenses so popular? they dont offer no zoom range and are fixed. What do you do if your too close or too far from the subject and cant move where you are?

Why are prime lenses so popular? they dont offer no zoom range and are fixed. What do you do if your too close or too far from the subject and cant move where you are?

These were taken with a 400d. It has good image quality.

Don't know about the 70-200 - I think many people sware by their f2.8, so if you can afford it and would use it, go for it.

Primes are popular because you get some of the best image quality - if you're too close/too far and can't move, then yes, you have a problem, but you can't use an 85mm lens for everything. You'd often be too close with a 70-200mm.

Also, prime lenses are fast - often 1.8 at reasonable prices, the faster you get the more expensive they get. The fastest zooms are incredibly expensive and are not nearly as fast as primes. With large apertures you can get lovely pop and bokeh, perfect for portraits. It really depends what you shoot most of the time.

I like primes because you don't have to worry about focal length - I know what I'm going to get with that particular lens. Means I have to be more creative in composition and it actually can help you become a better photographer.

I don't know how to describe it but pictures from FF and 85 1,8 are more beautiful than from 40D, for example, see on the twigs out of depth of field on the pictures posted by me.

I am trying to decide between this lens and the EF 100mm 2.8 macro. Would you think the 85mm to be more versatile, or is the 100mm worth the extra $150.00 for its' sharpness? I have a T1i. I was considering the new EF-s 15-85mm but they want too much for that lens.

There isn't a "lot" of difference in the focal lengths, but you give up one-and-a-half stops with the 100 macro in exchange for...well, macro. Also, the 85 is faster focusing.

Which is more important to you -- fast-focusing, wider aperture or macro capability?

love this lens since day 1 bought it. really sharp wide open & IQ truly brilliant in low light. but dunno why in my head always keep playing around with a mysterious slogan "let go this lens! get 70-200 f4 non-IS". Anyway, here are some sample using this lens. no editing except resize to smaller size.

Not sure what exactly that is in your picture tsamarin but it isn't a hot pixel. A hot pixel is one that, for want of a better description, overfills it's bucket, on a long exposure and renders an incorrect output , which then stands out quite obviously in the photo. Used to have loads of them on an old Fuji 6900Z of mine.

Yes, but if you want 1.8 then you'll have to get this, although I went with the 100 and I love using the 100 for dual purpose- portraits AND macro.

Beachgirl,

Probably. I have heard that PhotoBucket is one of the sites that applies additional compression to your photos - not good for these situations. But someone who actually uses it shoudl chime in.

I really like Smugmug because the full size images are posted (as good as you can upload) and then when you reference links to individual pics you can specify the size and therefore viewable quality in this, or any other forum or message.

Tony,

This is bizzarre. Were these shot in JPG? Or otherwise processed? It would be hard to tell without viewing the RAW image. You may want to pose this question on one of the threads on RAW, Post Processing and Printing section.

Those buds are especially fake looking. Very odd.
