Shenanigans?
Yeah it front back focuses like a mad man. Micro adjusting just bandaged it at one distance. But if I move closer or farther to my subject the focus is all over the place. I had single point af on, right at my wifes face and it was blurry while her chest was sharp. Something is wrong when my 18-55 is stopped down to the same f as my 85mm was (f/5) and my 18-55 is sharper...

85 1.8 just faster than 50 1.4, accurate is same same; 28 1.8 not use not know, but it's a wide lens, you have to buy both of them (85 & 28) if you need to shot at 28mm.

Spellbound seeing these nice pictures. However, I have a question to experts.......is this a good lens for less than full frame cameras (like what I have 500D)? Is this not 'too far' kind of feeling? My use will not be restricted to portraits....

Depends what you need the lens for?
I'm planning on coupling it with a Sigma 30mm 1.4, which should give me long and short options, but not much room taken up.

Yes, It will work just fine. With your 1.6 x crop camera this lens will resemble the focal length of a 135mm lens on a FF camera. Actually, 1.6 x 85 = 136. ;)

Since I have gotten this lens it has not came off my camera. I dont know if its the fact that its a prime or that I just love the creamy BOKEH it produces! I think I might just like using primes and am thinking of selling my 70-200L to fund for primes and just keep one 24-105L for a general zoom.

Save it cause this lens will make you want MORE! This was my only prime and after using it for a few months I loved the bokeh and sharpness so much that I sold my 70-200L f/4 IS and bought more primes! traded my 24-105L away for a 135L. It all started with this one lens.....

My problem is I know the power of the "L" lens...but don't have the cash right now for one let alone two that I really want. This lens looks to be the answer to help get me into primes, and not kill the wallet. But its the start of something worse I fear, Prime-a-holicism.

Which camera are you using? I just got a 5D and am trying to find a Sigma 50, which will be closer to the 85mm then I'd like, and I may consider switching to the 100 f/2 (or save up for 135L in the future). Keep us posted on your impressions!

I did the same. you just gotta go see what FL you find yourself using. Versitility wise 70-200l will be the benifit but to be able to shoot lowlight as well as the supurb bokeh you wont get that from the 70-200l

It's not "better" it is just different. F1.8 is as far from f4 as 200mm is from 85. It's just a different tool. I bet you like the subject isolation and bokeh! :)

I prefer the second one as it it is still bright but has a lot more detail preserved. Photography is all a matter of personal taste, however, so do whatever you and your model think looks best.

21st of September 2010 (Tue), 10:16
Agreed. Better, but I would still prefer to see more detail and color pulled back in on her colorful shirt - but I agree it is entirely subjective and a big reason why this forum is so engaging - we see so many different viewpoints and styles. Otherwise it would get boring.

haha you think that too! ive been seeing so many blown out style images lately of weddings/kids/couples etc but have never understood why.. i made up in my mind that it must be the photographer trying to achieve a more 'dreamy/happy' look or something, whenever i see blown out images im always squinting trying to darken the pic with my eyes or something hahha, see my badminton pic up there^ i love a decent amount of contrast!
DStanic

DStanic, I dun know how you're looking at the 2nd pic on your monitor, but I can see her both arms very clearly; and as what JH has talked about her t-shirt's detail & color, I agree, I have to study more! (and maybe I try a BW version, :)
